The Second Doctor makes his debut as the TARDIS lands on Vulcan, throwing the new Doctor, Ben and Polly into a Dalek plot, all while Ben and Polly try to work out what has happened to the Doctor and if he's the same man.
Not only the story which has to sell the concept of regeneration to us, is this story the Daleks' best appearance yet?

I think that Whitaker just gets the Daleks, and how to use them as forces in the narrative, in a way that Nation never did, frankly - and I think that the use of tension is perfect here as we can't quite get a firm handle on either the Doctor or the Daleks, so the story feels truly dangerous and out of control. Been absolutely loving this marathon from the beginning!

I personally absolutely adore this story. I think David Whittaker did an amazing job of writing the Daleks. I think he wrote The Daleks the best interms of their characterisation. I think for a 6 parter he also does a good job with the pace. Glad you enjoyed it a lot this time around :)

The second best ‘new’ doctor story ever-beaten only by Spearhead. Great sketchy/psycho doctor acting and ace baddies. Love it 😁

Yeah for me for the classics I would probably ranked them Power of the Daleks Spearhead from Space Robot Castrovalva Massive gap The Twin Dilemma Time and the Rani It's crazy that for both 2 and three the concept of regeneration hadn't really been nailed down or even named yet, but both of their post regeneration stories work so well.

Huge praise for how well you elaborate WHY you think the things you do - which I suppose is ultimately the whole point of the channel. As one of the people that IS completely charmed by Power, I think most of the time if I watched a video that was critical of it I might come away baffled, but you have logic to back up every well thought out criticism, and I genuinely appreciate that, even or especially when my own perspective is different. Also kudos for resisting what must've been a huge temptation to make the teaser for next time "I'll get to Scotland afore ye"....

Thank you Tony, that means a lot. I do *try* to put a lot of thought into it, whether or not that translates I'm never sure of but thank you for your comment! And I absolutely did consider signing off with that but couldn't bring myself to!

This is perhaps the best post regeneration story of the classic series. It explores regeneration and the companions reactions to it really well, completely retools an iconic villain, and is just full of atmosphere. This is one I would cheer enthusiastically about were any episode to ever be returned from it.

I still have problems with the SE animation, cutting out the recorder scene from episode one was a poor decision

It's Patrick Troughton!!!!! He made Doctor Who the long running show it became. This story also proves that the Daleks work really well when the person who created them has nothing to do with the story lol. I love the animations 😁😁😁 the telesnap reconstructions always left me sad

Love the Second Doctor, and I’m so glad that this story is widely available and accessible via its animation.

Totally agree about the whole rebel thing, nearly all the supporting characters are quite bland, but on purpose, so they dont take away from the new Doctor being such a focus. One of the few Dalek stories where we dont hear the heartbeat control room sound 😀

I’ve only done The Marathon once so far (and I skipped any story that hadn’t been reconstructed). As much as I loved Hartnell, I remember feeling a real shot of energy when Troughton became the Doctor. And that lasted for me throughout his whole run. He’s probably my favourite Doctor. The animated recons do leave something to be desired though - like you said, it often feels like the characters aren’t acting a lot of the time. Troughton’s actual performance is much more… well, animated!

When the animation was done, in 2016. likely sponsored by BBC America, PotD was shown in limited run in limited US Cinemas. I went to see this, dressed like the 2nd Doctor, in black coat, bow-tie, and tartan trousers. There were about 40 people in that suburban Ohio cinema. Movie edit, version. We have not gotten the remaster animation on disc,...waiting for Blu-ray box of Season 4, for that.

I always enjoyed this story way more than Evil of the Daleks - which i found dragged a bit. Power just zips along and the Daleks are cold and calculating . Listerson is a tragic character - not evil or a madman hell bent of world destruction but blinded by scientific curiosity and drive. His desent into a total psychological breakdown is well realised. There is enough going along with the plot and subplots to keep it engaging. The only downside is that two episodes cliffhangers with the Daleks are very similar Daleks chanting together over getting their power.

Over here in the USA, we only have the first attempt at animating Power of the Daleks, Really bummed out about that, but I do have the equipment to play imported blu-rays, so I still have a chance at getting it at some point

Troughton legit is not likeable as the Doctor is his first story, to me it feels like he is being wilfully and deliberately confusing and I keep getting annoyed at him talking in the Third Person. Do you want Ben and Polly to trust you or not? The rest of the story is good though.

He's kind of an absolute a**hole for his first few stories lol. In the highlanders he's smashing dudes heads on desks and generally being a complete nuisance to everyone 🤣.

with the 60th anniversary over the chances of seeing even 1 episode of this story is ZERO. bring on deepfake AI and CGI remakes but his may take another 10 years to happen

I am with previous Chris. I love Troughton, the Daleks are back and the surviving clips are excellent. But the sum of its parts just never does it for me. Whilst the Daleks are excellent manipulators, to show the second Doctor firing on all cylinders the colonists and rebels need to be able to match him. Unfortunately, The colonists are a lame bunch of faceless bureaucrats - I find Quinn forgettable and Peter Bathurst is just poor acting - he plays the same role just as badly in five years time. The rebels are equally sketchy and we don’t really know what they want apart from the power hungry Bragen and Janley with excellent performace from Bernard Archard and Pamela Ann Davy. (Nice to have a female villain something the classic series doesn’t do that often and I always look to Davy's role in The Avengers “The Living Dead” to see what we get here in Power. And sad that Polly and Ben have a week off each which may colour your feelings about their being underused in the story. All in all, they've redecorated - I don’t dislike it.
