The Power of the Daleks is one of the most influential Dalek stories ever made, despite the fact that the original footage is lost. All footage and music is the property of the BBC
Absolutely one of my favorite stories. I remember getting a DVD of the animation for christmas. Not only are the Daleks in Power manipulative and cunning, but they also make little mistakes and then recognize the mistakes they make and correct for them!! “A dalek is bet- is not the same as a human.” rare, but still very dalek.
Power and evil of the Daleks will always be my favourite Doctor Who stories ever. Great memories of the episodes when I was young. Shame on BBC for destroying the tapes.
To me, Power of the Daleks is THE best Doctor Who story, bar none. It is the perfect serial that had a lot it needed to do, including setting my Troughton to a 1960s audience who had never at that time seen the main cast member suddenly change actors midway through the series. It had a lot going against it, yet due to brilliant writing, brilliant casting and brilliant direction has become timeless. I well and truly hope that some, if not all, of this serial still exists somewhere
The animated version truly is excellent-it’s like an animated comic book. Storywise, I could poke a few holes in it, but it is very enjoyable for a six parter.
I wonder if TPOTD was already wiped by the time season 6 got aired. I recall some episodes of significance were kept, and the show was going to be shown overseas, which may be why so few copies were made?
One of the best Dalek stories of all time. Might just be my 4th favourite below Remembrance of the Daleks (3rd), Bad Wolf/The Parting of the Ways (2nd) and Dalek (1st). And seeing as the story no longer exists, my introduction to it was via the first animation release that this story had got. You might say that I was having a blast watching it that, other than the Daleks themselves, my personal favourite of the story is the guy who gave the Daleks back their "power" in the first place: Lesterson. Also, I would even say that The Power of the Daleks is, by far, the creepiest Dalek story in Doctor Who history to this present day really. That is especially when considering as to how that they are very intelligent in this story and you can tell so very easily that they hate being "servants" to creatures that they deem to be inferior to them. Seriously, I get goosebumps from the lines: "I am your ser-vant!", "We understand the human mind!", "We're not ready yet to teach these human beings the law of the Daleks!" and the ever so popular "Daleks conquer and destroy! Daleks conquer and destroy! Daleks conquer and destroy! Daleks conquer and destroy!" And here I thought that the Dalek fleet reveal towards the end of Bad Wolf was petrifying enough, but here with The Power of the Daleks, holy cow! It turns the amount of creepiness up all the way up to eleven personally. Love it. Love it. Love it.
The SE animated version of the story is a phenomenal recreation, brilliant. It perfectly recreates the story, showing you how truly amazing it was. Power of the Daleks is my favourite Classic who Dalek story. I love how evil, manipulative and callus they are. Rather than kill all members of the colony at once, the Daleks are patient and use them to their advantage. This story gives the Daleks so much character and I personally love that. I love when the Daleks are actually given characterisation instead of all being generic. The Daleks are also so expensive and they have been given very memorable dialogue that has become iconic. I love how the Daleks even question why human beings kill each other in one scene. It shows that even Daleks are not as utterly ruthless as humanity sometimes. I wish David Whitaker had written more Dalek stories as he does an excellent job development them as a threat. The Daleks have to work their way up from the bottom. They begin as vulnerable servants to become terrifying aliens of war. This story is brilliant, if you haven’t watched it please do go and watch it now, you won’t regret it. It flies by and the story is a masterpiece. Xx
The Power Of The Daleks is the first animated Doctor Who story that I have ever watched which it is great animation and I did enjoy of watching this fully six episode animated Doctor Who Dalek story.
I watched this as a kid in the 60's after school. Don't remember much but iIt's probably this episode that makes me think in retrospect that the Daleks are the greatest "villains" ever created. Single minded hive mentality with absolute certainty of their own superiority. Frightening and enthralling as an 9 year old. These old DOctor Who episodes are truly the stuff of childhood sci-fi. Thanks for pointing out the animation. Didn't know they exist so will have to search now. Cheers.
I watched this as a little boy in the sixties but can't really remember much about it as I was still scared to death by the Cybermen at the time. The animated version was very welcome.
Just found the animation and ... OMG !!!... just hearing that early rendition of the opening theme song sends shivers up my spine. Simple, mind bending, pre-digital sci-fi music, the stuff of childhood dreams. Thanks again for bringing this to my attention so that I can relive part of my childhood. Cheers. ... now the memory of seeing the Dalek crawling outside of its transport module. Cool.
I own the original reconstruction dvd as due to me being in America, Blu-Ray formats might not be compatable. I also own the audio version with naration as part of a huge boxset of lost episones and stories. The animation is great and very detailed. I really did enjoy getting an actual chance at finally watching the 2nd Doctor properly and I was not disappointed. David Whitaker knew how to write the Daleks and did some pretty interesting things with them. Final rating: 9/10
Sadly this story is one where everyone did as they were told and junked the episodes. They only made two copies for overseas sales and it's unlikely any will ever turn up. The last broadcast location was Singapore and their prints were either junked or returned to the UK for junking.
There are people in the us with whole libraries of every episode on vhs Aside from that this episode is tomme the most horrifying and, Dalek because they win and the amount of killing they do
On the topic of Victory’s connection to Power, there were actually several short scenes shot during its production that were meant to be shown from a pov shot of an Ironside’s eyestalk as it explains the significance of the progenitor. These included a model shot of the end of Part 6 with the destroyed Dalek, two props who would later be dirtied up for Asylum of the Daleks inside of the Dalek capsule, another model shot depicting Aridius from The Chase, and the two Asylum props in the gardens of Grims Dyke to represent Evil of the Daleks. The footage can be seen here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9dluHW3qMDI.html
The mysterious sealed capsule & its reveal of web covered occupants as a cliffhanger (complete with sudden drop scare) is clearly nicked from Quatermass & the Pit part 3. Ironic, as the Martian ship in Quatermass looks like a Dalek.
I have just recently watched Power of the Daleks and I was mostly confused by it; They're just robots because the story needed Lesterson to revive one of them after untold years of "inactivity" then they became "cyborgs" because... the writer didn't know what cyborg meant? Because someone reminded the writer they're not robots? Then later in the serial, we saw an automated system where Daleks were being placed in the pepperpots without saying where the Daleks came from or how they weren't dead. Good idea, but a bad plot.... OH, this would have been one HELL of a good Cybermen story. OH. Tomb of the Cybermen.
There's an interesting mini-documentary in the special edition release of TPotD, which explains that there was a huge crunch to get the animation finished in time for the 2013 50th Anniversary celebrations, which is why the first animated release was so rough. For the re-release they completed a lot of the work that was supposed to be done on the original release but was cut for time, and they also fixed several errors and re-angled some shots to make them more faithful to the shooting script - the post-regeneration scene in particular got a massive overhaul. So while the Special Edition version isn't perfect, it's closer to the original episode than the 2013 animated version was
with the 60th anniversary over the chances of seeing even 1 episode of this is ZERO. bring on the deepfake AI and CGI remakes which may take another 10 years to happen
