In the last video ( • Using a Virtual Studio... ) I went over the basics of using the virtual photo studio -- Set.a.Light 3D.
Today we'll head back into the virtual studio where I'll share my insider tip on why using grids with gels can be so powerful when trying to control the placement and saturation of your gels.
I'll be using a only 2 lights, a strip softbox and a beauty dish with both gels and grids showing you the differences.
I'll even show you a little tip on how to light your background with just these lights (no 3rd light needed!).

Glad you are sticking to the terms "Controlling the spill of light". Often people talk about grids focusing the light. It does not, it only 'seems' to. Also light wrapping. Light never wraps. It always travels in a straight line. But it seems to. And I have been guilty of misusing the terms. It is normal to ascribe terms of physical realty to what is only an appearance. And this vid may be the one to open my wallet. The software is not cheap, especially for a hobbyist. And as you commented elsewhere, boy has it improved since I first started drooling over it.

I think it's a worthwhile investment for sure. You can experiment in the comfort of your own home (or couch lol) and gain some confidence on how to do it in the real world -- especially if you can't practice in real life right now. If you do decide to get it be sure to use code LINDSAY-15. lindsayadler.photo/setalight3d

Having taken your 'Lighting 101' course on Creative Live, I bought my first 'proper' light. But the funny thing is, the dedicated trigger for my camera (a Canon) isn't accepted by the camera! I've tried everything and neither of the two companies involved (Canon & Interfit) can help me to resolve the issue! I really wanted this light, as it impresses me so much. I see many professionals like yourself using lights from brands other than the camera's manufacturers and would love to know how you get the two different 'machines' to talk to each other? Otherwise, it's back to the drawing board for me! I loved this video by the way! I've only had problems with gels so far, yet this explains it so well!
@lindsayadlerphoto
@lindsayadlerphoto 3 года назад
Sorry to hear that the lights aren't talking to each other. Generally this has to d with radio receivers, are you using them? Maybe trying a different radio receiver could help.

Hurh, I can relate so much on what you explain, it will be so much helpful, can't wait to test it ! But I've always wondered, and I didn't find a satisfaying solution yet : how do you gel your beauty dish, softboxes etc ? Bare bulb, bowls are ok, I almost master the ancestral and sacred art of gaffer :D Though, I managed to gel my beauty dish once, but it was a ferocious battle through which the gel didn't make it alive :P As soon as I can afford your gel photography tutorial, I definitely will buy it ! Thank you so much for your teaching !

Loaded question. Given your experience in the studio and working with gels, how accurate is Set a light? BTW: I not only see Set as an excellent learning tool, but an excellent teaching tool. What has frustrated me in many teaching vids is the varying looks of models and their positions changing from shot to shot. One wants to control for all variables, except for the one you are working with. I know, I know, without a live gorgeous model, nobody would look. I suspect a good style would be to mix the 2. And it would also show that no matter how closely you try to duplicate something, reality will throw in a monkey wrench. As usual. Excellent concise vid. Makes its point.

It's great software (I use it myself) and the video is instructive, but my question is: Going back to my real studio strobe and a beauty dish of 22 inch I must say that the gels I have are far to small. I looked for larger ones but cannot find them. How do you solve that? (I don't use Profoto strobes but Bowens strobes). I don't see a simple solution for specifically the beauty dish.
@lindsayadlerphoto
@lindsayadlerphoto 4 года назад
I'm not sure what size you have, but you don't necessarily need to put the gel over the entire beauty dish. You can just put it over the light which would solve the issue. I have 12x12'' ones for sale if you're interested: lindsayadler.phtoo/gelkit

I mean ultimately it's whatever you put in front of the light that changes the color. Some harder ones are designed to be clipped into things. I generally use the ones that are very thin so I can shape them around my lights.
