Dr. Andrew Weil has practiced and taught integrative medicine for over thirty years, and believes that treatments addressing mind, body and spirit are the future of healthcare. On this episode of Health Theory with Tom Bilyeu, Andrew Weil discusses the current mental health crisis, describes what has gone so wrong with the American medical system, and explores alternatives to the common modern diet of processed foods and sweetened drinks. He also explains why he views consciousness as primary, advocates for open-minded skepticism, and discusses the benefits of plant-based treatments for everything from allergies to PTSD.

I like the concept Tom is after and I know he's had a lot of success in it but Ive noticed it over and over again that he interrupts the people he's interviewing and likes to give his opinion. And honestly a lot of times he sounds a bit arrogant and talks just to talk. This is just me, but as an interviewer aren't u to dive into the mind of ur guest and learn and expose as much from what they have learned in life as u can?

I get what you’re saying. I see it differently though. I think when he’s doing that, he’s trying to share where he’s coming from so they can guide him to where they are. I occasionally see him talking to talk, but I usually see a reason behind it.

I became very frustrated listening to this podcast. They make mention of a movie I hadn't seen, so I guess that was their little private moment. They make reference to housewives on LSD without explaining what the heck they're talking about. I agree the interruptions are becoming obnoxious, as the guests aren't allowed to speak. This didn't just happen with Dr Weil. And I'm sorry but I really don't care about your relationship with your wife. I'm listening because I'm interested in your guest.

Dr. Weil’s Main Message: You can get better (You can heal). 1.The body can heal itself 2. Dr. has a botany background before going to medical school 3. His mentor Richard Schultes introduced him to ethnobotany 4. Ethnobotany - Study of plants as they are used by other cultures, mainly traditional peoples. 5. Had an interested in plant medicine and psychedelics and his medical degree allowed him to work in this area. 6.Interested in how the mind affects the body - consciousness 7. Is consciousness part of the brain or not. He believes those are separate aka Panpsychism 8. Panpsychism is the view that mind or a mind-like aspect is a fundamental and ubiquitous feature of reality. It is also described as a theory that "the mind is a fundamental feature of the world which exists throughout the universe." 9. Your brain matter can change through thought and other ways where you work the brain - similar to exercise. 10. Firewalking - scientific explanation is a small layer of air that insulates the heat. Or hot coals is not a good conductor of heat. Dr. Weil says this is nonsense. He has gotten burned with shorter walks and did ok with a 40 foot walk. Dr. Weil thinks it is a mental state. 11.This is based on using your mental state to change body’s cell structure. He was in poor mental state and burned his feet and a strong mental states when he did a successful firewalk. 12. Dr. Weil was sick and had an out of body experience. He saw his body surrounded by doctors. This is an example of conscious state separate from the physical body. 13. Mental state plays a big factor in healing. 14. Dr. Weil uses MDMA to get into altered state. It allowed him to pet a bumblebee because he was so relaxed. It was an experiment he heard about and wanted to experience himself. 15. Dr. Weil sees himself as a open minded skeptic. Most of his viewpoints are based on personal experience. “Strong convictions, loosely held” - Tom Bilyeu states is how his mindset works. 16. If you don’t like something, you can change your internal mindset to change your behavior. 17. On changing your mindset and consciousness, Weil states a study that shows how meditators (meditation) are able to change their brain’s physical structure. 18. This is why Dr. Weil says focusing on your breath is a good place to create a safe environment for the mind. 19. COVID is creating a mental health test. 20. It’s normal to have moods but there are some reasons for poor mental health 21. Disconnect with nature 22. Today’s few hunter-gatherer societies don’t have depression. They have healthy diets. Not connected to devices (phones). 23. Today’s society is in self isolation, no human connection 24. Western diet is another issues. Stop eating processed and refined food. 25. Dr. Weil is a pescatarian (Vegetarian that eats fish) a. Grows his own food b. Eats health fats (Fatty fish, olive oil) c. Eat healthy carbs d. Sugar - stop eating it. e. Some fruit is fine 26. Our nation (USA) is a nutritional mess. We made unhealthy food cheap and easily available. 27. If one change - Stop drinking sweet liquids. Body cannot metabolize fructose. 28. Wants civilization to decreased meat consumption. Better for health and environment. Animal farming and civilization sprawl is increasing animal to human disease transfers aka COVID 29. We have an issue with cultural amnesia with past pandemics, like the Spanish Flu. We need to prepare better. 30. Healthy organisms are naturally resistant. Healthy eating helps the micro biome. 31. Feels that pharmaceuticals hurts the body’s immune system to fix issues like GERD / Heart Burn with pharmaceuticals versus improving diet. 32. There is no money to be made making people healthy 33. Dr. Weil is always looking for new foods. Has a matcha tea company. It’s the powdered form of green tea harvested in Japan. You need to get a good quality powder. Tea has high content of nutrients and antioxidants. 34. Believes in cold therapy. Jumps in the ocean each day. He spends time in British Colombia where the water is VERY cold. 35. Stinging Nettles is great to stop allergies 36. MDMA is great for PTSD and sees it being accepted by the public eventually 37. Psilocybin will be accepted for depression but trickier since the patient needs a guide to get the full effect. 38. Marijuana - in his 20s made him imaginative and free. And in his 30s he felt more paranoid and stopped using it. But still interested for medicinal uses. 39 Dr. Weil suggested Tom to try MDMA since there is a low chance for health issues.

Just discovered Mr. Bilyeu one interview ago because he was interviewing a person I was interested in. Same here. And I agree with some others that Tom gets a little overanxious and interrupts, so he might want to consider becoming a better listener. Overall, though, enjoyed the interview, mainly because Dr. Weil is such an interesting guy and for many more reasons than I knew. It's a tragedy that more doctors don't take the route he did. Our medical system is so entirely screwed up -- not only from a healing standpoint,, but from a system based on profit standpoint. Gotta give a nod to Dr. Weil's dogs, too, starting from the head on the arm of the sofa right at the beginning. Love to all!

Tom - I love your channel - I have heard you say many times over that you're sensitive to 'woo woo' because you think there is a lack of scientific proof. Well, as a scientist I can truly say that science is NOT the be all and end all of 'knowing'. In fact, it's incredibly limited by subjective opinions and biases, and is often driven or directed by 'prior findings and studies'. This is like looking into the night sky and only seeing the stars, but not the unknown spaces in between. Science hasn't really revealed that much about our reality - there is a lot more that is unknown than what is known. Most Western medicine is simply 'study-backed' or 'proven' ancient medicine or traditional plant medicine anyway. We need to keep an open mind and accept that there is a ridiculous amount of unknown and unproven theories - science can never prove anything to be true, it can only disprove or provide correlative probabilities (which in itself is based on what we already know or believe to be true).

Only 2 years ago , at 28, I started to attend gym, eat much more and... man, I,ve never been fitter or stronger in my entire life... I have muscles which I did not have before eating disorders... So this is interesting for me. I thought it´s not possible... but once I told my mind we are fricking doing this!!! I´ve observed exponential growth

Tom, you mentioned that if the argument is "life has shown me that you can take your body out of a healing state by doing things mentally or putting your body IN a healing state by doing things mentally, even if it's not objectively true, it has served me to view it that way, there is certainly power in that." It made me wonder about religion...do you think this line of reasoning should apply to religion as well?

Also Sativa and Indica are both different in their effects inherently. Indica is more sedative and Sativa is more stimulative.

32:00 Actually there's a word that can be written in English that comes from Greek and means both breathing and spirit. It's "PNEUMA".

Tom: Obviously you are going through tough times. Don't mistake talking with your shrink with conducting an interview.

I did fire walking once. I felt no heat. I mean, I knew it wss there but I didn't feel it as anything damaging or painful and It felt more like someone near by with warm skin.

"please go to a doctor for information" - I 💯 get where your heart lies in this but unfortunately in my experience, this video and you Hannah have more info in your little pinky then many doctors! This goes for most "women's reproductive issues" like endo, adeno, PCOS, vulvodynia etc. Love your education and support for conditions like this 💕

Wish Dr Weil was given more opportunity to speak. I so enjoy listening to the Dr on any subject. Disappointed the interviewer dominated the program. Also, wish Dr Weil didn't feel the need to follow the interviewers foul language. It didn't add anything to the interview.

I just ordered some Nettle leaves and capsules from iHerb, for my sinus allergies, I hope it works because constantly sneezing and not being able to breathe is a miserable way to live. Antihistamines and decongestant pills make me feel awful. Thanks for the interview, less interruptions would have been better though.
