Julia is training Powerful how to pull a cart or sled! She enjoys training goats and also selling them. We raised Powerful from our own herd, and he is Toggenburg, Alpine and Saanen cross. If you are interested in buying a really Powerful goat, Julia would love to hear from you!

Goaties rule! This is the sort of thing I did as a kid, designed and made harness and stuff for the ponies and the goat. Cool DIY sled too.

Hey Julia. Have you ever tried to tie a carrot to a fishing rod and place it in front of Powerful's nose. He will bond/ listen/follow that carrot faster than any motivation speech you might of given him. Especially if he is hungry. Would love to see some footage of you trying that out 🐐👍
@fourseasonsnorth
@fourseasonsnorth 6 лет назад
No, I haven't put a carrot in front of his face before... our goats seem to be more tempted by oats :) but I should try it sometime - it might work better than expected, and sure would make a funny video!

Most goats don't like carrots. At least in my experience of raising/having goats, none of my goats have liked carrots and apples.

That is a good puller! How many “horse power” is your goat? 😀

So awesome! Do you guys use Pat Coleman's book on natural goat care? We are wondering about using pine shavings for out goat bedding but we read reservations about using them. Kids coming next month. Thanks a bunch! Oh, have you ever had dairy sheep? We hear good cheese from them!
@fourseasonsnorth
@fourseasonsnorth 5 лет назад
No, Don't think we've heard of that book, although sounds like it would be good. We haven't heard about using/not using pine shavings for bedding. We use straw. Although we used pine and spruce needles as a goat dewormer and they love them. We don't have dairy sheep but we really would like to get some. We have kids coming about the same time as you... we're very excited as we imagine you all are too :-)

Do you have any other video showing how to train the goats to pull? I can't find anything that tells how to start the training. This would be awesome to learn.

Hi Crystal, The other video we have is here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qirWlfIW5D0.html That's right, it's difficult to find information on training goats. Here's a write up Julia did for A Better Whey on training a goat to pull: blog.cheesemaking.com/training-a-goat-to-pull-by-julia-biegel/ Hope that helps. We'll keep in mind about making another video on how to train, more step by step! Take care!

Hey, Powerful is very beautiful :D He looks like a Peacock - Toggenburg goat mix, do you know where he comes from? I own peacock goats and I'm starting to train one to pull a cart as well :D
@thegoatkid5388
@thegoatkid5388 5 лет назад
Thanks :D I think the alpine is the american version of the peacock goat or a subordinate for all the goat breeds from the alps that were imported to america. A purebred peacock goat is very rare to find but I think the color of their fur is inherited dominantly, thats why there are so many crossbreeds that look alike :D Beautiful boy btw!

Hi there! Powerful was sold a few months ago, but Julia is in the process of training another goat named Ivan, who has an even better attitude than Powerful. He will be for sale sometime soon. We also have other pet/trick goats that are for sale. Here's a video that shows Ivan pulling his cart, and also how friendly he is: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eL04XHAdFkk.html

We noticed your goats have horns, you don't disbud them? Since we just had our first kids, five boys, we went through the highly recommended process. One little guy seems to have gotten an infection but he is doing better now. Love to hear your experience with this. Also, what do you feed your mama does in milk? Our doe had triplets and just isn't producing enough milk and isn't very favorable towards them milking! We're working on it. I'm reading about chicory for goats, seems they like it and it's good for them as well as comfrey. But so much is in controversy so we try to look to multiple sources and glean from others and learn from methods of old. Would love to hear your experience, thanks you guys! Oh, have your kids come yet?

That's awful. Why do that??? I wouldn't if it's not abnormally agressive with it.
@Meevious
@Meevious Год назад
They use their horns for all kinds of things, some of which are important. I'd recommend amputating your arms before you debud a goat, to get an idea of how it feels. Horn related injuries are really rare and not having horns can also result in injuries, since one use for the horns is suspension to protect their skulls when they butt heads. I've seen a lot of this kind of injury in debudded goats, who don't know that they're not equipped to butt heads with each other, so they might lose a 4 or 5" chunk of skull, or have the whole cranium crack down the middle, since it's not properly protected. I'm with Lukas, it's something to consider as a last resort for a goat who has caused an injury, not something to inflict unnecessarily. Goat combat is mosty ritualistic and has strict rules, designed to prevent actual harm. An important one is that when a goat cries for mercy, the fight's over and the other goat should stop immediately (though it doesn't have to leave the defeated party alone, just to stop that particular attack, so it doesn't push anything beyond its breaking point). Even with these rules, sometimes there's an accidental fluke injury. It can be upsetting, but it's always a possibility, horns or not. What you need to look out for though, is deliberate injury. If you're keeping hundreds of goats, or you're really unlucky with genetics, you may encounter a psycho who'll get off on breaking the rules and on breaking legs. Those goats do need to be separated from potential victims, or if that's too impractical, dehorned. From a handling perspective, the handlebars are actually a lot more useful than they are dangerous. Just like most goats don't want to injure each other, they also don't want to injure humans. From their point of view, an animal that injures other animals on purpose is repulsive/deranged and can't fit into their society. Like we'd think of an addict who shoots up a hospital to get drugs. This is my experience, dealing with some hundreds of goats, with different backgrounds, but every goat is different and different herds have different characteristics. If all your goats are the crazy kind who'll deliberately hook each others' legs and not let up, then debudding probably is the way to go, if you really want to breed goats like that. X)

what camera are you using?
@amberlinbiegel8589
@amberlinbiegel8589 6 лет назад
I use a Canon 70d usually with an EFS 18-55mm lens. If I keep my camera on a tripod, it really helps with extra stability.

Amberlin Biegel search "canon stabilizer " on Google. I saw a guy making a movie while snowboarding and he was using one of this type of rigs. looked like it worked quite well for shooting while on the move

I actually have a Glidecam stabilizer, but haven't used it that much. I need to practise and get it working. When used properly, it gives very impressive, smooth footage!
