In addition to the Trio and the other main characters Roy Clarke introduced a cast of semi-regular characters working in the town. Most of these officials are diligent and thorough - then there are the police, in a league of their own. Join me in the Yorkshire countryside and re-trace their parts in this record-breaking TV sitcom.
The year 2023 marks 50 years since the pilot and first series of “Last of the Summer Wine” were broadcast. This series of videos is filmed in many of the well-known, and some less well-known, locations seen in the programme.
Cooper and Walsh "shorts"
1: • Under Fire
2: • Guardians's of the Law

The "Summer Wine Decanted" book is available on Amazon: www.amazon.co.... and many online book sellers - and now from the Wrinkled Stocking Tearoom, Holmfirth.

Thank you for showing us how complimentary, these smaller-roles, played a vital part in the lives of the main characters and in the town itself. The policemen were always funny.

Wonderful thank you. I met Ron Backhouse when I visited The White Horse on my visit to Holmfirth in 2000, I had two pints of real ale, and when I was leaving I thanked him and he bade me goodbye with the words, Goodbye friend!. Many thanks again for the lovely video. Best wishes. Gérard.

LOTSW always feels very nostalgic & reflective, simpler times in a crazy world.. Life is fleeting guys.. don't forget to stop & smell the Roses..

Not being a "Cyril" fan I never watched the earliest episodes featuring the various librarians. Good decision IMO to move away from the library and out into that wonderful countryside! Always enjoyed the scenes involving the policemen. One of the funniest moments was when Seymour, Cleggy and Compo accidentally dropped the mangle onto the patrol car, then retrieved it before the officers got back to their (now smashed) vehicle, leaving them wondering what happened. The barmaid references were funny as well, including the often-mentioned "her at 'The Feathers' ".

The mangle episode is brilliant but also love the earlier series, especially up to Sid’s departure, loved Sid’s times, reminds me of an England sadly changed forever.

Thanks - yes, sadly, while trying to document the series and the performers, the videos have become something of an obituary, but I think this is a good way to remember them and the enjoyment they brought to people, worldwide.

Actually obits are a joyful memory or at best, should be. You guys do an amazing work. Funny a bit of fiction should be such a release / escape / reminder of a mythical past. Giggles and smiles to you.@@upstagedbyadog

@@upstagedbyadogI’m going to try to visit your beautiful country again in the coming year. Are there accommodations and other attractions in the area of Holmfirth? What is the proximity to other larger cities? I’m planning on visiting the village of Barsham. It’s supposed to be where my family name is derived. Thanks for your newly discovered videos! Very informative and interesting.

@@shannonbasham4178 Hi Shannon. pleased you have enjoyed the videos. I'm not an expert on the general area, but there are lots of self-catering holiday lets in the area, and a fair number of hotels of all sizes. Most of the activity in the local area seems to be rural walks, and - despite or because of the hills - it is popular with cyclists. The nearest major town is Huddersfield, with Oldham, Barnsley and Sheffield, within about 20 miles.

@@upstagedbyadog thank you. Barry, "are you afraid of old ladies?" cop, "no. just that one" referring to Barry's mother in law, Edie with just the right touch of fear. cracks me up every time. i also find the accents with their class distinctions fascinating.

Probably Roy Clarke liked libraries and spent some times in them. Ray Bradbury praised libraries for his education.

If ever two characters did `not` work for me- it was `Probert` and `Jones` My view; a total `misfire` Thankfully (For me) they were only in Three episodes-and for me, that was Three too many! Apologies to any `Probert and Jones` fans- but not for me. Along with Tom Owen`s `Punk` family, just out of kilter with the spirit of the show.

In series 2, I think the additional characters were still a bit experimental. I think it was felt there needed to be "real" characters as library staff, rather than some non-speaking extras. Of course the librarians and the library were soon to be side-lined as the Trio had other places to frequent.

Brookside was never on ITV. It was always Channel 4
@MrDannyDetail
@MrDannyDetail Год назад
I suppose in his defence it was the second ITV channel from it's launch in 1982 until the end of 1992, before being given independence from the ITV network, so it's possible that people of a certain age do still think of it as being 'ITV' to some extent. But then again Brookside was made by an Independent production company, and not, as much of Channel 4's content was in those days, one of the 16 ITV companies.
