Before: My kitchen is so messed that I don't have the motivation to start cooking. After: My kitchen is so organized that I don't want to mess it up again by cooking. Boom... B-Roll
Something I've found are incredibly useful for organization: tension rods. If you have a large open space above your sink with cabinets on either side, like you do in your kitchen, get a tension rod and put it up there. Get some hooks and you can hang frequently used utensils from it. Might look a bit cluttered to some, but I like the aesthetic. Makes it super quick and easy to grab a tool, and makes cleanup easier too, since you can just hang it right back up on the hook instead of worrying about a dish strainer. Done with your spatula? Give it a quick hand wash and throw it back on the hook. You can also put them in large cabinets, like the one under your sink. Put a tension rod up near the top of the cabinet, then you can hang bottles of cleaning fluids from the trigger.
@@crystalchen5680 Got to look for all-in-ones. Ninja likes to do things like that with blenders, toaster ovens, slow cookers, etc. Also, a Kitchenaid stand mixer is invaluable
I only have my coffee maker on the counter. Everything else fits in my cupboards. And if I get an appliance that doesn't fit in my cupboards, I get rid of something. I'm lucky I have a pretty big pantry area so I don't have to put food in my cupboards, though.
thaitichi I have an apartment sized kitchen which means I have one pair of cabinets, and one counter top. I definitely am frustrated by my cooking space very often but I do not let it stop me. Not to say I wouldn’t prefer a nice kitchen like his , I’m just saying if you really want something you don’t let obstacles deter you from doing what you like to do. 😃
Leekie Mayes It amazes me that apartment designers tend to make the kitchen the most compact space that they can, cramming as much in as they can at the cost of functionality. And for what? An extra half foot by six feet of room in the living area? I need that for counter space and cabinets, damnit!
I would love a "how to time a meal" video. There must be some rules of thumb. But I always seem to finish a side early or time my meat to rest too long so it's almost cold when everything else is ready.
From my own experience, I always think about/ look up how long something will take before I start cooking anything. Let’s say I’m making a chili, with rice and a side of broccoli. The chili will take the longest (let’s imagine 40 minutes). Then, the rice will take 17 minutes, so after the first 20 minutes of chili cooking, I’ll start the rice. Then, boiling the broccoli will take about 7 minutes, so the last 7 minutes of the rice and chili I will start the broccoli. I’ll do all this thinking, and also all of my food prep (chopping, measuring) before I begin. This way, when things need to get cooked, you can dump them in and move on. I know this is a) not a video and b) not the creator of this video, and c) 6 months late, but I hope it was somewhat helpful nonetheless.
In "foods & nutrition" class in school, we had to write out what would be done in what order & how long it would take and prepare all our ingredients (wash, chop, measure, etc) before starting to cook. It became a habit. Now, I just make a mental list (unless it's a big meal like thanksgiving, or something) but it helps & having everything ready to go makes such a difference! No burning stuff while you read the recipe (again!) and finish chopping those carrots...
The dollar store has shelf inserts, they work pretty well for lighter items and are quite affordable. You can build your own lazy Susan out of some pie tins and marbles. Basically just sandwich the marbles between a pair of pie tins and the tin should rotate around relatively easily. Also get a labelmaker and label the shelves and containers with what goes in them. It's especially helpful if your spouse isn't quite on board with all of it or your mother-in-law comes over and is putting things away.
I love your videos! You inspire my home cooking and I love your style. Recently, I designed a garage apartment with the kitchen on these principles. Had a tough time with the small eating/prep area, then decided to use a stainless countertop height prep table on wheels with a little storage underneath for the table. It works great with a few bar height stools, and frankly it was cheaper than a regular table.
I have watched over hundred kitchen and pantry organization videos. I don't yours the best and I will be copying your layout for my kitchen and will get my brother to built me that kind of rolling table. I have been planning on a straight kitchen layout due to space. Thank you so much. This video totally has inspired me to have a nice life with simple and easy ways of organization. Very simple pantry but very clean and good looking.
"We need to start cooking more" YES! I'm not too tired. I'm just lazy and to be quite honest my health is suffering because of that laziness. So today I made a vegan chili and I feel better for it.
Hey That's fantastic! Cooking is an addictive process, you just gotta get those wheels rollin! The more you cook the more you're going to want to cook. Might as well make it as easy on yourself as possible during that process. :)
It may have to wait until a different time of year, but it would be really awesome if you did some kind of a guide about produce and how to pick good produce. This guide was awesome! It’s amazing what people don’t know about their kitchen.
God bless you for making this video. Organization is SO important, in every aspect, but you don't hear a lot of people explain it in the kitchen. So this was helpful!
I think it's important to remember that it's okay to move things to where they work best for you. Just because you put the dishes in this certain cupboard when you moved in doesn't mean they have to go there if it's not working for you. Experiment, move things, it's your kitchen, make it work for you
Glad to see someone without too much cereal types or seed types. That way I can see how much space that I really need since I don't like eating those. Thanks for the good organization tips
Please make more of these videos, you have an innate talent of making things understandable to the everyday guy, I've had culinary education, and I still appreciate the way that you present.
My father in law LOVES to cook. Whenever he comes to visit, he always wants to cook in our kitchen. During his last visit, I asked him if he enjoys cooking at home now that he sold his restaurant. He said no, but he likes using my kitchen because there’s so much space. I do not live in a mansion...my home is a little less than 2000 sq ft, but I follow the same rules you just mentioned. It makes cooking an easy and pleasurable experience. Great video!
Really enjoyed your video!!! Now will have to play catch up and watch them all. I am 71, and always learning new things. I do cook every day, and even pack my husband's lunches so he has healthier options.
I'd love more guides like these! I just started preparing more advanced meals for myself and these tips will really help! (I accidentally had all the things I needed for cooking emergencies like plates, utensils, oven mitts, and pot lids, SO far away from the stove and it caused some spills!)
This gave me flashbacks to my mom casually explaining all of this to me at least twice a year growing up. Whenever we went on holiday and rented an apartment, she'd comment on how the kitchen was organised. Once I also learned this in school (functionalism in architecture), the only way to stay sane was to join her. Left-hand or right-hand workflow? What turned out to be slightly unpractical with our own kitchen (which she designed, but there were some limitations with where stuff could go)? She's an ecotrophologist. Brb having a breakdown over my current apartment's kitchen, might have to move all the plates and stuff so I can put more food in the cabinets..
Completely agree with you about cooking more at home and an organized pantry/kitchen. Can't wait for my kitchen renovation to be over, it's been a night more. Great content btw and would love to see more of videos like this ✌️
Getting a lazy susan for spices is such a game changer. Saves us so much time :) EDIT- PS, I'm about to move into a home with a larger kitchen than I'm used to, & this video will be such a help when setting it up, ty
Thank u ,i want to do a spring clean now in my kitchen and start organising.I had bought a few storage containers in dealz, and euroland i have under my sink for cleaning sprays etc.and some for cereals and tins in another press .This video encouages me to organise my presses more thank u.
Wow.... Your kitchen is my dream one! Every item you use looks so simple but awesome!! I need to clean my kitchen as I wake up tomorrow! Anyways I need to throw away unnecessary items first! Thank you for the tips!
I'm about to move out and I don't know the first thing about cooking. Could you make a Kitchen Essentials or Starter Pack video of just like tools and spices you need to start cooking?
Hi Joshua, thank you for your practical guidelines and I got inspirations from you.Lately I shifted to my 602 sq ft. apartment and started a life of my own. When I stepped inside,I realised I should set up the kitchen section a little bit.In terms of how to organise lots of things in a proper way so that I could utilise the limited space when I host parties at home or invite friends over here.Try to make it a charging point more functional and comfortable.
This guy may seem to be really proud if we only look at the way he talks and how "extra" he acts, but he's actually humble enough to make so many videos to explain the basics of cooking Also I'm really shocked by how little he has in the kitchen as a pro
im from houston and living up in Québec now ...burrrr cold ! miss it down south..... I've watched dozens of your videos now and i love each one of them !! you're doing amazing work .... dont stop anytime soon !😀😀 if you're ever up this far into ice country make sure you try the "Poutine" delicious !😀😀😀
Spot [ass] on advice! I can't believe I'm praising a 23 year old [I'm 74 next Wednesday] for being so astute - but I'm ecstatic that I get the chance to do so. Josh, you have a great future ahead of you - - - Press on, my little Bro! {and thanks for the recommendation of Rene Redzepi!} Fast rising dough and gorgeous plates to ya, Man! 🤠
great video thanks! I would like to see a similar guide on the care of cooking utensils. You know like how to reseason cast iron, knife sharpenning, and especially how to care for wooden utensils.
I'm moving to a new place on my own in two weeks and found this video.. I'm actually sure it will help me in my kitchen to store things.. And not sure about the rolling island, but kitchen is big, might be useful to get one.. who knows.. Also can make it at the hight you like to work at.. I'm above average hight, so some kitchen counters are too low and I end up standing crooket over them when working.. ISLANDS GUYS !
Kitchen ZONING! This is what I wanted to understand without knowing that's what I wanted to know! I'm reorganizing my kitchen, and I've gone through vid after vid trying to find what was bugging me about my kitchen! Now I know! Thanks, Josh
Maybe you've got more spices now, but that's not many spices. I have a full spice shelf next to the stove, magnetic containers on the side of the fridge and small spice containers on top of the microwave. Love herbs and spices! Live the video, thanks!
Refrigerator tip: Keep a cookie sheet in your fridge to place fresh/frozen meat on. It keeps you’re fridge clean and you can use it as a tray to transfer the meat to the counter so you don’t drip on the floor.
I am white af and I have like 3-4 times that many spices....but I like flavor in my food and I like to cook food from all parts of the world (home enthusiast).
A massive kitchen with a bare minimum of equipment and food. I have a small kitchen (big by many standards here in the UK), and a lot of equipment. I gather you buy your shopping daily according to need on the way home from work, but I have to keep a large stock of food, as I must take advantage of any offers. In the real world, whilst those tips do work, an uncluttered kitchen is a luxury.
Hey josh i love all your videos, especially these educational ones. I was wondering if you could make one going into what items to put into containers and what sizes for wwhat items or even one of the refrigerator more in depth
Whoa.. I'd love to see your stuffs in refrigerator again and again.. they're organized well.. I hope you want to share many tips how to store kind of stuffs (like last-night foods, veggies which have no space anymore in the vegetable drawer, canned-spicies, etc).. is that okay to put them in any liner of refrigerator? because many last-night food, vegetable and fruit are pretty hard to handle for me..
