You could really set it during any war of human history and make a period action horror movie out of it. A lot of people say, that's a bad idea because even when using guns, the Predator is hard to kill so with only swords and bows available it would be more unbelievable but I don't agree. Maybe the Predator chooses not to use his plasma blaster to make it more interesting and only uses his melee weapons. Can you imagine how awesome it would be to have the Predator go up against, Medieval Knights, Samurai, Napoleonic soldiers, Greek Hoplits, Roman Centurions, Ottoman Janissary, Mongol Horsemen, Vikings, Arabian Bedouins, Caribbean Pirates, Aztec Warriors, Sikh Fighters, Chinese Shaolin Monks, etc...
Hollywood is one of the most UNORIGINAL places on the face of the earth. It consistently gives us films that we ARE NOT asking for. Remake after remake, reboot after reboot and 90% of them JUST... DON'T... WORK. Case in point 1: The Andrew Garfield Spidermans. What a waste of two movies. Case in point 2: Terminator Genysis. One of the worst movies EVER. I could tell from the trailer that 'The Predator' would be RUBBISH. And apparently, IT WAS. Stop trying to reinvigorate franchises and create new ones. Tell me again why studio heads make the big bucks again?
Technically, they DID move it into the future in Predator 2... some like 10 years in the future. Though the comics actually DID cover the whole humans on a seemingly even footing with future tech, in the comics.
I enjoyed this up until the ending. What for me would have made this film work more is if we got more classic Predators as opposed to just one and have them be more interactive and definitely more on screen.
originally, our heroes WAS supposed to have teamed up with a group of friendly Predators (one who most likely worked with the government) against the Upgrade Predator. but for whatever reason (most likely studio interference), it got cut out of the movie.
This film was such a mess and takes the Predator mythology in pointless and unsatisfying directions. The characters are nice enough but do we really need every character to be the comedy sidekick? You have ONE character be the goofy crazy one. Not every single member of the team have the same personality. The CGI looked pretty bad too and did anyone want to see a proper Predator killed and replaced by a CGI one?
Man i got sooooo pissed in the theater when he showed up and destroyed the "real" predator and I could immediately tell he was all CGI. It was downhill from there.
Simple answer is Predator is a film that should have been left as a single entry, just like ghostbusters should have been, top gun has been until they mess that up. Some films are just self contained stories but totally agree the more we know about the predator and why it does what it does the less interesting and less threatening it becomes, nothing is scarier than the unknown

Retcon all the sequels but the problem is all the predator lore that had been created, when the first film came out no one knew anything about the predators and that's what made it tense
@@cosmodeus1720 I actually like the second film to an extent, it's a bit of a paradox for me, the predator is my favourite movie monster of all time and love seeing him on screen but also know the more we do see him the worse it becomes. Predator 2 does have its charms and is an enjoyable watch taken on our own merits but placed together with the original I think it does more harm to the property than good.
There needed to be a simple movie that expands the Predator lore juuuuuust enough where it doesn’t get too complicated. Perhaps a film that goes further into the “why” they value trophies so much. What’s the philosophy behind the trophies? A touch of history perhaps? But not too much history. Enough to give our imaginations fuel.
yeah man, I was waiting for the tank sequence (which looked badass) and McKenna's "come and get us motherfucker" quote to show up, but didn't. so I could almost tell that the suits at 20th Century Fox fucked up the editing
Sadly that kind of shit is pretty typical for films these days. Remember the 2010 Predators trailer? Adrian Brody's character gets targeted by several Predator plasma casters at once. Never happened in the movie. Or the missing shots from Rogue One.
Predators is soooooo underrated. It is the second best of them all in my eyes. We deserve shit like this for hating on a great film that was Predators.
Predators is a great movie. Every one says its a rehash of the first film. Saying because of the jungle setting. Uh idk how they forget but the original was the best. It has a great pace. It is the most rewatchable of the series in my opinion. I remember going to the theater and knowing Robert Rodriguez produced it. The opening gets ur hearts pumping immediately and after Royce slams to the ground and the screen cuts to the Predators logo I remember saying fuck yeah to myself. Most underrated film of the series.
I would love to see in the end a human hybrid Predator coming out of the pod, alien 4 resurrection style, speaking the phrase "shit happens". Then, he Kills everyone and scapes from the compound!
How many more times are they going to rehash the same concept of a bigger badder Predator turning up that the regular Predator and humans have to both fight against? They did it in AvP:R and Predators and neither of those films were very successful yet they then thought it would work in The Predator?

Good point in saying that there is too many movies on the predator and alien franchise. They are meant to just be simple action/ horror film. No backstory should be done for the movies. The AVP needs to copy the video games script and story in the future out in space.

You were the one prime inspiration for me becoming a RU-vid critic myself, which wile not perfect in terms of the video and mostly just me talking to the camera, I make up for it with my extensive information on a film. Thank you for the inspiration you've given me. *;)* With that said, I was honestly disappointed by how _The Predator_ had turned out, what should have been a bona-fide surefire hit with all the good pieces together (including Shane Black directing), somehow became a convoluted mess with coppy editing and too-out-there expansion on the Predator mythos. It's sad to see both Shane Black and the Predator itself become like this after years of greatness. What happened here?! What I really want is a simply Predator film, go with just one Predator and retain the hunting elements from the original. I don't know if a sequel centering on a Predator invasion of Earth sounds workable plot-wise.
If the original cut was bad. It would've been on its own terms. Like Bvs theatrical cut was bad and confusing. And the directors cut is still bad but it's not confusing.......as confusing. That dream scene/vision/time travel scene lol
From what i've seen in deleted content, it would have been even worse. The studio may have actually saved it from devolving into an even worse nightmare.
I think the main problem with this film is, that it tried to be smarter than it should be. In the end of the day, the Predator franchise is more a slasher franchise with elements of actions. We don't need to know why the Predators collect skulls, spines and skins. They just do. Just like those rich people going to Africa and shooting Lions. We didn't need some bullshit reason of the Predators collecting DNA. Just make a movie where a big bad Predator kills some fools.

This movie was my second most anticipated of 2018. I saw it twice already. I liked some stuff but overall it was a disappointing to me. I may still buy it, however (after all I own AVP: Requiem 😅)
Steven Lornie In my book AVP Requiem is the worst of the series (counting all the Predator movies, that is). However, what I enjoyed the best of that movie was the Predator, of course, and his new weaponry and gadgets such as the whip.
I preferred it to the first personally but they're not movies you judge on technical standards haha. Call me sick but I loved the way the beastie impregnated everything. The gore was magnificent.
Steven Lornie Between the both AVP movies I rather the first one for a few reasons: it wasn’t dark (the second one was literally dark), I liked the Alien Queen, and enjoyed that final fight. Yes, the alien in the hospital impregnating everyone there was sick Hahaha
It's not so bad but it doesn't feel like a Predator movie, its like if you remove the Yautja from this movie and just replace em with any kind of alien species, just a generic alien that crashes in a small town with government people capturing it and then it escapes kind of movie
From what I saw of this movie, its another sequel to the AVP films NOT the original predator films regardless of what they say, it follows more down the paths that the avp films set up
Pod-- I heard a theory that matches what it has been said in this podcast. The gift inside the pod wasn’t supposed to be a “suit” (as McKenna referred to) but something else (we don’t know). Also, this theory suggests that the end of the movie was rewritten.
There is a reason why it got hacked. No one ever spoke about the first one being hacked. No one ever spoke about the second one being hacked. Maybe the film they produced was not very good. Maybe they tried too hard to take it in a different direction. Friendly predators? What were they trying to make? Alien Nation 2?
As soon as I heard Olivia Munn was going to be in this movie I knew this was going to be garbage. Nothing against her, she's just one of those actresses that bad films are attracted to. You see her name on a big film and you know there's script problems, because who puts Olivia Munn in a fucking Predator movie?
Watched it last night and can honestly say worst out of the predator movies (not counting avp 1 and 2, they are in a league of their own). Was a complete mess.
Well, I grew up on the original '87 Predator and Predator 2 films, both great classics, nothing will top them in my eyes. I saw the new one, The Predator, and I did not expect it to be so cool and funny. It's a totally different species than the previous films being that it's more comedic, but my friends and I had a lot of fun with it. Them Hell-Hounds tho! \;D/
People need to realise that the reason the fugitive predator was killing people left and right is because 1. they had him scrapped to a table getting ready to cut him open and 2. He was racing against time itself because he was being chased by a bounty hunter aka the ultimate predator while trying to protect the pod with the suit to give to the humans so basically he didn't have time to fuck around. After Predator and then Predator 2, where else could you go? Just about any story would be a rehash. The only options I can think of where you don't destroy the idea of what the Predator is at it's heart are maybe a period piece or a direct adaptation of the first AVP comic book.
or they could've made a "Predator" prequel set around the early 1700's. because if you forgotten, the Elder Predator at the end of "Predator 2" gave Harrigan an old flintlock pistol that said "Raphael Aidolini 1715" on it. which hinted at a pirate captain giving the Elder that same pistol during that time period.
This movie is the sort of guilty pleasure as the Resident Evil series for me. Trash, but enjoyably at 4am after a party when you arrive home drunk but did not want to go to sleep yet.

Saw it last night. FFS what a piece of crap. Honestly I feel both AVP movies are way better, even story wise. The pacing of the movie is too fast, the story is bad to say the least and oh my god the ending... I was hoping for an upgraded xenomorph egg being in the pod. This iron man suit crap was just dumb. And why did it say “pod 3” on the predator pod? I probably missed something but damn...
Nitpick: Mr. H overestimates the "invisible" camo. It's not going to work in close quarters/bright light etc e.g. stowing away on a plane cross-country.
Saying it's "amusing" that people are calling this the worst movie ever is the same cop out Jay Bauman at RLM used to criticize people who hated Prometheus. Of course there's worse movies out there, just watch any Neil Breen movie. However, there aren't any that are such a disservice to THIS franchise (AVP: R is a very close second). That's why Prometheus was hated so much too. You may have a point that the humor resonates more with British audiences than American ones (surprising, given that Shane Black is an American). However, even if it was LOL hilarious, it doesn't belong in a Predator movie.
Why are people saying they wanted a Xenomorph to come out the pod at the end? *correct me if I'm wrong as I'd already had enough of the film by this point and was just waiting for it to end * wasn't it stated that what was in the pod was a gift to help us? How in the fuck is a Xenomorph going to help us? Are we gonna shoot it in the head, labotomise and have that trained to fight with us too? It's an even worse scenario than the one we got. The suit was shit but at least it made sense as a gift. I was getting ready to scream "Fuck off!" at the screen as I was expecting it to be either Dutch, Harrigan or Royce stepping out, still stupid but woulda been better than a predator armour that looks like it was computer animated in 1999.
ENGAGING RANT MODE: I love the original film, and have a soft spot for Predator 2 and Predators, but The Predator (2018) was awful. The only one that's worse is AVP:R, and that's not good company. And as a side note, I thought the predator dog designs in this film were completely ridiculous. They have the same dreadlocks as the predators.... yeah I hate it when they do stuff like that. Real dogs don't have human heads of hair. It seems like a very lazy way to show "this is a predator dog, look, it even looks like the predator, but also like a dog!" instead of what would an interesting space dog look like, kinda like what Predators did. And I knew this film was was going to be awful, just from watching the trailers. I'm just sad that it seems the only appropriate way to enjoy this film is apparently with a few beers, not taking anything seriously, laughing at crude humor, and reveling in bloody action. I can't believe that Predator has gone from a masterful subversion of genre tropes and gripping tension mounting throughout the entire film, one of the most memorable action films of the 80's, to the schlock that we got this year. And to all those who think it's best to enjoy it for what it is, just mindless schlock, remember that it is preciously because the original took itself serious in many ways that contributed to it's power as a great action film, one to be remembered, not forgotten the day after. Easily a 1/5 from me, what a joke of a film, and a joke that cost almost $100,000,000. Capitalism and Hollywood. RANT MODE DISENGAGED.
I thought The Predator was great. I was expecting dumb fun, I got dumb fun. The autism thing was a bit weird but still. People seem to have the original on a pedestal but seem to forget that it also had dumb jokes and cheesy characters. Maybe it's because it's old/from the 80s people cut it some slack but I don't see anything different between the tone of the original and the tone of this one. The lore is expanded on a bit with the different kinds of Predators (I know they did it in the last movie but they did a little more this time round). I liked the idea of genetically modifying themselves. It's something a space alien race that hunt stuff all the time would do. The characters were all memorable and cool. Probably the best charactisation since the first one I thought the action was pretty good. Could've been better but I can say that for a lot of action movies nowadays. I'd give it a 6.5/7 out of 10
The first film wasn't a complete comedy film tho. Yea it had jokes but not predator giving u thumbs up jokes. This was the same issue with jeepers creepers 2 being more comedy with the creeper playing jokes compared to the first film.

Maybe I'm just spoiled, but I look at all the films we have available, and there's so many good movies worth watching that any new movie that isn't anything better than average isn't worth watching. I could watch a mediocre new movie, or I could watch a great old movie. So, already being biased against new films, if you tell me it also treats a franchise I'm a fan of with disrespect, I'll dumpster it without a second thought. Clearly quality craftsmanship wasn't worth their time, so why should their film be worth my time?
I see where you're coming from. So many good movies have already been released that it's hard to live to their standards. It's even compounded by the amount of bad movies being released. It seems the only decent ones are Marvel, and I was burned out by super hero movies when the first Avengers came out in 2012.

I saw both movies in theaters and IMO Suicide Squad makes The Predator look like a masterpiece. ...The Predator is honestly my favorite movie I've seen this month. Though the only other two I've seen this month are Willow and Rogue One.

If you wish to revive a franchise don't make large changes to what the predator is and could be. Adding things that just is not what fans want to see. Predator is a horror / action movie NOT A COMEDY. I think adding a child in a predator movie is just unwise. Why not go to the future if you wanted to make the connection of human / predator alliance. It would have been better as a sequel to the first movie, This is how I see it. ( CAMERA is on Dutch in the helicopter as it leaves the area, CAMERA swings to the far side of the jungle near the camp that Dutch and his team blow to hell. ZOOM in to a Russian Special Forces Team a version of Dutch's team sent to find the missing Russian officers. As the team is exiting the jungle at the edge of the camp to they find a survivor. The survivor tells them of an American team that left around four hours to the north. A solder locates a trail that leads into the jungle, the team enters the jungle in pursuit of the American team. Arriving at a area flattened by weapons fire, spent rounds every where, a bloody poncho with a blood trail. The team sees a SKINNED BODY HANGING IN A TREE, one of Dutch's team. As the team continues into the jungle one of the team is killed and taken. ( NOW THE HUNT IS ON ) THE PREDATOR is one of a three predator hunting party, Dutch killed one, NOW TWO REMAIN ON THE HUNT. We the fans can see weapons used by predators from other movies and a more intense hunting sens on the solders, small changes to mask and armor to CUSTOMIZE the character. I think it would be cool to see THE PREDATOR have a death match to claim the ultimate hunter. and all the Russians die because The predator is a specialist in hunting dangerous prey,THEY kill ALIENS rely!.
Who here thought- SPOILERS That "the weapon" was going to turn out to be a Xenomorph? In fact, I was so certain of the fact that I feel like there must be a deleted scene or something where that Alien hisssss sound is the last thing you hear before cutting to the end credits.
But that makes no sense. Dutch didn't go anywhere at the end of Predator. At least Royce was stuck off-world so that could have made sense. I guess I'm glad they didn't stick with Dutch.
Cyril actually he did. In the script for Predator 2, it's novelization, deleted scene in the movie, and comics, it was explained (by Keyes in Predator 2) that Dutch was taken to a military hospital to be treated for radiation poisoning, escaped, then had rumored sightings from time to time among underground mercs in conflicts where Yautja were thought to be involved, then he just plain disappeared. As a result he had become a legend among mercs and even the Predators... the Predators even gave him a name... Predator/Hunter Killer. Then as I mentioned he just plain disappeared. Well this would have explained WHY he just disappeared.
Cyril what's more, he was suppose to basically be the one in that armor at the end, take the helmet off, light a cigar, congratulate them on surviving, then draft them into the war against the Predators.
That documentary looks very interesting, and I don't really like documentaries, but this one I might enjoy (a lot), by the way, you should do an retrospective on Robert Rodriguez México trilogy.

@@MADGUNSMONSTER saw it a few days ago and Jesus Christ it's bad. it's great as a laugh fest, but my inner predator fan was dying inside. the "humor" kills this movie, it's forced and poorly executed with tons of outdated jokes (there was a yo mama joke in 2018). go see it if you're a fan of bad movies but save your money if you want anything substantial. there's no suspense whatsoever and the plot is far fetched even for a movie about killer aliens. my honest rating is a 1.5/5, seriously one of the worst films I've seen in the last couple years.
it was obvious from the Trailer, also Shane Black is a pretty shitty writer/ director. His 90s movies are fun but I don't like anything he's made in recent years. Iron Man was awwful and the gay parie movie was only half decent.
