Barbara Morgan Gardner, associate professor of church history and doctrine at BYU, has written a powerful and insightful book called "The Priesthood Power of Women," published by Deseret Book. We highly recommend it.
In the book, Dr. Gardner carefully lays out the difference between the eternal “familial priesthood,” in which women are full partners, and the more temporary “hierarchical priesthood” concerned with church administration. She points out that we tend to focus on the latter when talking about priesthood, which has been the cause of some confusion in the church over time and has kept women from experiencing and realizing their own priesthood power and authority. Top church leaders have moved to clarify this in recent years, and have invited women to begin claiming their spiritual inheritance as priestesses of God.
Faith Matters recently hosted Barbara at an event to talk about the book, which turned into a delightful conversation. We hope you enjoy!

I love love love this conversation! I have always felt like a rebel or unfaithful because I ask questions. I wrestle with gospel topics, I wrestled with wording in the temple, I seriously wrestle so much, but I am still faithful, I still love the Lord, I love gathering with members. I love serving in the temple…always! But that does not mean that I don’t have serious questions and there are some things that did not sit right with me. When I expressed my feelings to others I got the vibes that they thought I was becoming an apostate. No! I had questions, I knew there were answers and that I needed to wait upon the Lord. He has taught me much about being patient and trusting Him. We need to ask questions! We need to listen with faith that there will be answers and that God loves us even though we cannot always understand His ways. Drawing nearer to Him, we will find the the answers but it might take a lot of work.

I wish this information was available during the 70's when I joined the church. My Mother didn't want me to join the church, because she said they mistreated women. My first calling in the church was young adult leader. The guy that was the male representative said to me that the weekend activity was going to be swimming not roller skating because he held the priesthood. This was very confusing because I thought the priesthood was for blessing the sick. So, my reply was, but no body is sick.

I think by having and listening to conversations like this opens the door for more communication and input from the Spirit realm. I have a daughter who has struggled with addiction for almost 20 years. She is in a bad place right now but this last relapse I’ve truly gotten out of God’s way and had more peace yet recently I was thinking of her and felt the impression from our Heavenly Mother whispering to me ‘We are in this together. We both love her.’ It was a beautiful moment and reminder that we are indeed not alone.

Long ago when teaching 'Cultural Refinement' lessons in Relief Society, I was struck by the instructions for teachers in the front of my manual. (Remember the lessons on different countries?) We were instructed to expose the senses of the sisters to art, music, cultural differences, geographies of the world, so that they could broaden their ability to perceive information on the spiritual level that only comes through those creative exposures. That they would receive growth, and expansion in their spiritual ability to perceive things of the Spirit. In other words, the ability to 'hear' spiritual promptings comes through that part of the thinking (right brain) that is moved by emotions from hearing music that stirs your soul or by seeing art, color, nature, etc and being moved to tears with the beauty of it. The Still Life paintings done by so many great artists, were done to perfection in even a reflection of the room in a droplet of water on a piece of fruit, to bear the artists testimony of how perfect God's creations are. Those paintings were a religious offering of that artist to the world. The manual promised that as sisters become accustomed to these experiences their ability to receive revelation will increase.

This is beautiful 👏👏👏👏👏 we are meant to be equals. Yes, we have different roles, but we are meant to stand together, side by side, spiritually, objectively, and open heartedly tackle both the joyful and challenging concepts of life and it's physical components. It's beautiful. I am so grateful to be apart of such a great shift in the perspective of the church. It's beautiful to watch the church shed certain skins and transform itself and become even closer to achieving the goal of Unity in Christ Consciousness.

This is just my opinion, but i think angels are preparing peoples hearts for further light and knowledge about this subject because this is something that been in my mind in the past few months more than ever and I have my own opinion on the priesthood in relationship to woman based on the promises given to woman in the temple, and also on what was said about Heavenly Mother in this presentation, how Heavenly Mother is a co-creator with Heavenly Father.

When Barbara Morgan Gardner said that young men in the Aaronic priesthood receive the keys to ministering of angels, but any young woman (indeed any member of the church for that matter, according to her) can receive ministering angels through the sacrament, and by receiving ordinances, etc., I wondered: "Then why do the young men need to be ordained? If the young women do not get the opportunity to be ordained by the laying on of hands, why do young men?" Isn't there a sexual discrimination that is the metaphorical 'elephant in the room'? This still seems to be a mental gymnastics rhetoric of a Mormon apologetic idea to get the women of the LDS church to think that the church is not sexist. Does that make sense?

I’m majoring in Marriage and Family Studies. I believe that The Restoration is literally about the restoration of relationships. Listening to this whole fireside I’ve been listening for the connection to relationships (grateful to learn the term familial priesthood by the way). 1:02:09 I looked up what the suffix hood means: “individuals sharing a (specified) state or character.” Now I’m pondering how that fits into all this.

Something is very off about this concept of a "relationship" with heavenly mother. That is not the focus of our lives right now. That is a distraction. People that seek and look past the mark are walking a dangerous razor sharp edge. Relationship is worship and communication. Trying to establish a relationship with heavenly mother is prayer and communication. Thats opening yourself up to FALSE spiritual communication. Why do we only pray to Heavenly Father in the name of Christ? Because there are FALSE spirits ready to make contact with you and it's much easier to get responses from them than put the work into communication in Spirit and Truth with the One True God.

Alot of speculation. Some truth. Some false doctrine. I understand people dont always say what is “technically correct” when they are in an informal setting-so ill give them that. And ya, i can appreciate the blinders of tradition coming off and exploring different ideas-just an FYI to anyone investigating/long time members- there are a few thing that don’t completely hold water but it i do respect the ideas they are presenting and as always-one must seek revelation for themselves through study and prayer as to acquire ultimate truth. If you want at least ONE example of what I’m saying, listen from about 12min-14min. Talking about how heavenly mother loves differently than heavenly father “well, because she is a woman of course” that isn’t true. BOTH heavenly mother and Heavenly Father have reached a state of Godhood and therefore emanate/distribute/share their love (or better termed “CHARITY”) perfectly. When we talk ultimatums “perfect love” (charity) is perfect and unchanging (“endureth forever”) and therefore eternally consistent and the same. and therefore, cannot, and does not, change from gender to gender or person to person. If WE have charity, we share the SAME love for others as Christ does, and therefore the SAME love for others Heavenly Father and “Heavenly mother” because we see individuals for who they really are and how God(s) see them. So no, Heavenly mother does not love differently than heavenly father she doesn’t know you in a “different way than heavenly father simply because she is a woman or you are a woman etc etc. not only does that insinuate that Jesus Christ could not have adequately suffered the pains of womanhood because he doesn’t have the same mentality as a woman but it also insinuates that heavenly mother and heavenly father lack a PERFECT unity. Their understanding and treatment of their children would therefore be “different” Don’t be mistaken:perfect is perfect is perfect is perfect. There is NO variance in perfection. If one being has reached a state of absolute perfection in all things-it is the exact same status and condition as ANY other absolutely perfected being-no difference. This is just one of the thing i heard mentioned which backs up my claim. If you disagree with that Then i suggest you ponder what perfection means, what a heavenly union consists of, how unified the father son and holy ghost are and how That directly relates to a eternal heavenly marriage and eternal posterity etc etc.

Proclamation on the Family states the differences between man and woman clearly, that applies to Heavenly Father and Heavenly Mother as well, and their eternal union. Your explanation of Charity and Love and suffering of Christ was spot on, but I think the parallel to God's in their perfection is something we will not understand until we have more knowledge in the next life.

Perfection doesn’t mean sameness. It means reaching the highest state within your own realm of attributes. Women are different than men, and they will continue to be in the eternities.

She's is not insinuating or implying any of the things you're saying. Not to me. Men and women can work together in unity, including our Heavenly parents, but they're are still and always will be individual persons and gender. Yes, women do love differently than men, but like she said, it is not in a competitive way. But rather in a complimentary way. One is not better than the other. Take childbirth for example. A woman is not superior in relation to a man because she can grow a baby and bring it into the world. Without the man's contribution, there's just no way. But their individual contributions created a beautiful human who carries both their DNA. That's how I received what she delivered. Great insights. I'm inspired.
