That definitely brought back lots of memories for me. July 21, 1971 was 6 days before my 6th birthday. I remember watching The Courtship Of Eddie's Father, Room 222, Medical Center, McCloud, & Hawaii Five-O. I don't remember the other shows. But, at 5 years old, I just watched whatever my mom & dad watched, except for all of my Saturday morning cartoons. I remember the Certs commercial too, and my mom always carrying Certs in her purse.

Well Fred, you finally hit the magical one for me. An absolute waterfall of memories from this one. Wednesday nights were poker nights at my aunt and uncle's house. While my dad and brother were otherwise occupied playing poker, I was stationed in front of the TV watching some of my favorite shows included in this video. I had such a crush on the little red haired girl in "To Rome With Love ". And Medical Center, loved it. The lawyer show with Robert Foxworth, another favorite. Holy moly Fred, where's that time machine, I'm ready to go back.

Gregg, I was an Immortal fan who audio taped the final two episodes in its first run because I knew it was going to be canceled. I listened to those tapes and practically learned them by heart. So, unexpectedly, when the show was rerunned that summer, I was excited to see those last two episodes again so I could put images to the sound. To my horror, in my area, the final two repeats were pre-empted by local basketball. And I didn't get to see those episodes for another 20-plus years on the Sci Fi Channel.

It’s interesting that Love on a Rooftop aired that summer. It had only run one season - 66/67. But when Duel and Carne’s careers took off with Alias Smith and Jones and Laugh-in, respectively, ABC re-aired the series in the summer of ‘71 to capitalize. The series has never been in syndication or released on DVD, so the summer of ‘71 was the last time the public ever saw it, until RU-vid.

1971 I was 17 and two months prior to 7/21/71 I graduated from high school. I had one more month before I would be one of the commuter students attending my city's branch of the University of Texas. Living at home was a plus because I saved the leftover $$ after paying tuition/books/fees with my $250 per semester scholarship. [Gotta thank the fossil fuel industry whose "contributions" to the state made Texas state universities affordable for many "kiddos" as our high school principal called us.] I only watched two of the shows mentioned here - The Kraft Music Hall (my parents were 55 and enjoyed the older entertainers) and [what else?] Hawaii 5-0 which to this day is the best theme song ever. Our Modern Dance Club chose that as our special performance music. On the next day our first time ever, no dance background dance teacher read us her totally made-up rules on choreography and costuming. There would be no "native" costumes (not even muu-muus, much less grass skirts), no "native" choreography (not even if we would have been able to dress in floor-length muu-muus). We took those directions to heart and gave it our best "non- try". Our performance was awful. Our costumes were awful. If that wasn't enough, on the recital programs she changed the name of our second dance number. So, "Nights in White Satin" became "KNIGHTS in White Satin". I bet those hapless knights lost a lot of jousts and battles.

Great story, any photos?
@marthawelch4289
@marthawelch4289 2 года назад
@@LRogersPhoto Thank you for your comment! At one time I did have some photos but many of them were destroyed in the "Great Desert Flood of 2006" which came after the "100 Year Rainstorms". It only took a couple of minutes for a wall of rainwater to race down from the mountains destroying businesses and homes along the way. Then it found my sidewalk and finally crashed into my apartment. The closet with the boxes of photos was at the proverbial lowest point and it turns out that water really DOES seek its lowest point. Many things were destroyed in that flood. But there were still some photos remaining which I took with me when I moved to another location. However, H2O found me. The desert was once again making up for lost time with extra rainfall. Everything was looking good until I saw water escaping from the hot water closet and also flowing out of cracks in the ceiling/roof. A few months earlier the landlord had decided to patch some problems with the roof. The apartments in this area were originally built with flat roofs to save $$ and counted on the usual rainfall. This building's roof had experienced some cracks so the owners decided to have a company put their "special compound" on top of the existing flat roof. This time the water damage occurred when the roof's existing runoff spout was closed off by a large drink cup. Once again, H2O sought its lowest point by settling into small depressions in the roof and then the rainwater's weight broke through the roof into the hot water closet, one of the bedrooms, and that bedroom's closet. The boxes with the few remaining photos were destroyed along with many other things - furniture, computer, books, etc. So, I keep the pictures in my own personal memory's virtual photo album.

Another great look back, Fred! I had just turned 6 & was about to go into 1st grade at this time, and I remember seeing shows like "Eddie's Father" and ROOM 222 in primetime. CBS moved TO ROME WITH LOVE from Tuesday to Wednesday nights in January to make room for ALL IN THE FAMILY. ABC had originally aired LOVE ON A ROOFTOP in 1966-67, and I guess Judy Carne & [by this time known as] Pete Duel's success by this time led the network to share this show again. Unfortunately Pete Duel killed himself on the last day of the year, leading Roger Davis to replace him on ALIAS SMITH & JONES. The KRAFT MUSIC HALL opening looks like one of the roasts that Dean Martin hosted through the 70s & 80s. I remember watching a few of them. From what I read in a newspaper for this night, NBC was running DES O'CONNOR this night. I'd never heard of him before, but he was a British performer whose show was used as a summer replacement for THE KRAFT MUSIC HALL over multiple seasons. Unfortunately Christopher George didn't live the life of THE IMMORTAL, dying just 10 years later in his early 50s. I've read that an injury he sustained while working on RAT PATROL about 5 years earlier left him in a weakened state that shortened his life. I'd never seen that MCCLOUD Season 1 opening before. NBC presented 4 different series, 6 weeks at a time, for FOUR-IN-ONE, then reran the shows together, an episode from a different series each week. MCCLOUD was aired as a 1-hour series this season, and I understand that in order to syndicate these episodes, Universal pasted 2 episodes into 1 to create 3 additional 2-hour tv movies from the 6 episodes.

2:30 The beautiful building shown in the opening of Room 222 was destroyed in an earthquake on Feb 9, 1971, shortly after the show premiered, but it was used for the duration of the show. It was a real high school in LA and was one of the last un-reinforced masonry buildings completed before they were banned after the 1933 quake. I remember enjoying the show, but the theme always sounded like a tampon commercial. The Smith Family didn't get much of a reception as a family drama, so it was re-worked into an action show the next season and the "Primrose Lane" theme (originally a 1958 hit for Jerry Wallace) was interrupted after a few seconds with a frenetic chase sequence.

Bill Bixby was an AMAZING and AWESOME actor. Always being a magician since I was a kid, I loved "The Magician". And few things give me a shiver every time like when he utters, "Mr. McGee..... Don't make me angry. You wouldn't like me when I'm angry." ("The Incredible Hulk') And of course, "My Favorite Martian" when I was a tyke!

I deleted that comment about "Love On A Rooftop." You did such a great job putting the video together. That's where the attention should go, not on some petty tangent about the dates I remember most of these shows. I was a freshman high school student in 1972 and I really enjoyed _Room 222._ The high school I went to was just like that, but swankier. It was the era of elective classes. I took courses in filmmaking and ceramics. My ceramics teacher was always wondered why I made so many smoking pipes. lol

You're aces, Fred! As an 11 year old in 1971 I watched only the 3 ABC shows - Eddie's Father, Room 222 and The Smith Family (the 7:30-9 pm timeslots), so I was only peripherally aware of most of the other shows. My parents watched Medical Center, and I was aware of Storefront Lawyers. On The Immortal, that was the unmistakable voice of Paul Frees as the narrator. And everyone remembers Hawaii Five-O! Damn shame about Pete Duel.

Remember this like it was yesterday. And Room 222 was always a favorite, #1 because I idolized Karen Valentine and tried (in vain...lol) to copy her hairdo, and #2, because I was in Junior High (8th grade), and so many of the show's weekly "themes" resonated with some of what we (of that age) were dealing with in our own lives. As for "Medical Center", all the girls had the obligatory crush on Chad Everett (we used to call him "Chaddy"...lol), and would giddyingly recount the previous night's episode (and how "adorable" he was) with each other the following day in homeroom. Where did the years go?!

"Courtship" was such a groundbreaker. A single father with a son that he tenderly cared for. The open and gentle love between them was a in total contrast to the usual rough and tough father/son relationships on TV. Great show.
@FredFlix

I wouldn't say it was a groundbreaker because of other single TV dads that preceded it, such as The Andy Griffith Show and The Rifleman, but Courtship FOCUSED on the relationship, which might have been a first, indeed.

Fred as always you deliver when we need it most. Our poet laureate of pop culture. 1971 was an interesting year and I am glad you showcased this. This was the watershed year when the networks were looking for more realism and canned a lot of the fantasy fiction - Beverly Hillbillies, Green Acres, etc in place of shows like All in the Family. Room 222 had been on for two years as had Julia which was actually cancelled by the time this video would have chronicled. One interesting thing I noticed that year was the networks tried to catch lightning in a bottle with big stars hoping the insipid scripts or poor execution would be overshadowed by the star power. Three examples come to mind the same year. 1) The Smith Family with Henry Fonda. I can answer that by writing that I remember the show but I also remember a Terry Gross (Fresh Air) interview with costar Ron Howard who denounced the show vehemently. 2) The Jimmy Stewart Show. The eponymous main character did nothing to save the boring story lines, insipid script, and uninteresting characters. There is also an alleged racial incident involving Jimmy and Hal Williams Jr - a fine African American actor who has more than distinguished himself throughout his career. Who knows? I’ll leave it at that. Interesting though, Hal Kanter who did so well with Julia had a flop with this one. 3) The Funny Side with Gene Kelly. That lasted about as long as it has taken me to write this. Unfortunate because unlike the other two, it’s not too bad. It came out in September 1971 and lasted three months. I think it tried to replicate the success of Laugh In. An integrated and younger cast featuring the always wonderful John Amos and Teresa Graves (Get Christie Love- an amazing show) and a very young Cindy Williams (Laverne and Shirley). Jack Benny did a cameo to save it - to no end. That’s kind of a shame because if you look at some of the shows, they are not half bad. They certainly deserved more of a shot than the other two

It was also the year that the FCC not only banned cigarette commercials, but they revamped prime time, called the Prime Time Access Rule, in which the time slot of 7:30p to 8:00p were reverted back to the local stations. So syndicated shows such as game shows and entertainment shows like Lawrence Welk, which ABC canceled in '71, but ran in syndication until '82. Hee Haw was also canceled in '71 by CBS, but ran in syndication until the early 90s. Syndication benefited from the new Prime Time rules. With the advent of cable, the PTAR was repealed in 1996, but syndicated shows such as Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy still air in those slots. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prime_Time_Access_Rule

My Hawaii 5-0 memory: We're on Oahu meeting my dad in 1969 for his R&R. We have a picture of me & my brother standing next to the Hawaii 5-0 sign...out in the middle of nowhere.
