Fun fact: Shrek was being made at the same time as this, but it was notoriously difficult and a pain in the ass because of the computers that wouldn't make stuff move the way people wanted it to move (they had to use hair texture on the grass because it wouldn't behave like grass for example). As such, working on Shrek was seen as a chore, and it was definitely used as punishment. Basically, when animators didn't do their job well enough on Prince of Egypt, they were sent to work on Shrek as punishment, and they called it "being shreked". At the time, they thought Shrek was going to flop, and that Prince of Egypt would be recognized as the masterpiece that it is, but the opposite happened. Good for Shrek, but this movie definitely deserves more recognition than it is getting.

I think part of that was the marketing. All of the marketing post-release was setting this up like a typical Disney morning cartoon/comedy. Just so you know, that scene with the moving hieroglyphs - according to the story in the Book of Exodus, the Pharaoh wanted the midwives to kill all of the Israelite male babies, but many of the midwives refused and they kept them. Also, this is a *Jewish* story in the Jewish Bible. It also happens to be in the Christian Bible because Christianity comes out of Judaism, but the story is read every year during Passover in Judaism and holds a special importance to Judaism. It's called Passover because God *passed over* the houses with blood (the Israelite houses). After they cross the sea, the Israelites walk in the Wilderness for the rest of Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. Moses delivers the Ten Commandments (twice), they worship a Golden Calf and get punished by God, and then Moses gives this great speech (Deuteronomy) retelling a lot of the story. And then they get to the land that will later become the Kingdom of Israel, ruled by King David and then King Samuel, and this is where a lot of the definitive/real history starts. It will end up dividing into two kingdoms, the Northern Kingdom of Israel and the Southern Kingdom of Judah (Yehudah). Assyria will destroy and conquer the Northern Kingdom, and then the Neo-Babylonians will conquer the Assyrians and destroy Judah and Jerusalem (including the first temple). That covers the first 11 books of the Bible, plus much of 1-2 Chronicles. The Jews from Judah get exiled to Babylon until Cyrus the Great (Persian Achaemenid Empire) conquers Babylon and Judah, and then Cyrus allows the Jews to return to Judah. The Greeks end up conquering the Persian Achaemenid Empire and therefore Babylonia and Judah around the 300s BCE. ~300 more years pass until we get to Jesus, where it is under Roman rule. The Romans conquer the Greeks in the 100s BCE.

Zuff isn’t totally out of place to confuse Moses and Jesus. The Gospel writers were very intentional about drawing parallels between the two to drive home Jesus’ authority to a community that would’ve readily recognized Moses’. I always thought it was an interesting choice for Moses’ mom Yoheved to be (presumably) dead when he grows up. Traditionally, Miriam offers to find a Hebrew woman for pharoah’s daughter to nurse Moses. She agrees and Miriam simply reunites Moses with his mom, so he has a continued relationship with her as a baby. In several screen adaptations, she’s still alive when he’s an adult. The Ten Commandments is my favorite live action adaptation if you guys ever want a nice biblical epic. The music (Elmer Bernstein) is incredibly memorable. This was hella fun to watch! Thanks for all you do.

The Hebrews had to cross the Red Sea, which separates Egypt from Asia, and after that they got to the Sinai Peninsula, where they got the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai and then wandered the desert for 40 years before moving on too the Holy Land. (Israel). BTW, The song, When You Believe, was made famous by Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey, and the voice of Aaron was Jeff Goldblum, the guy from Independence Day and Jurassic Park

So happy and surprised to see a reaction to this movie from you guys! I grew up watching it as a kid all the time. Being Jewish, it was for sure a staple of our entertainment. So glad to see more people seeing it and enjoying it! OK a few other things. Rob, yeah its the Red Sea so you're right! If you look at a map of modern Egypt you would see a body of water separating the Saini Peninsula from northern Egypt. The Hebrews crossed the sea and went back to settle their homeland of Israel. The singer who played Moses' mom is Ofra Haza, a famous Israeli/middle eastern singer who sadly died after the movie came out. ALSO FUN FACT, the two magicians, the skinny and fat one, can you guys guess which two men played them, you're currently watching a show which stars the both of them, and Selena ;)

The fact that none of you guys have seen this let alone heard of it at least is insane to me. My parents are Christian but they weren’t like going to church every Sunday or at all. And they didn’t force The Lord/God down our throats. They let us be ourselves in every aspect and make choices for ourselves. Even when it came to beliefs and believing in something. So I’m definitely not a religious person by any means. But I will admit I love to listen to a lot of the stories from the Bible and the thought/belief of/in God. Tbh I’m just a really open-minded person who likes to hear everyone’s thoughts and ideas of what they think will happen after we pass. Anyway what I’m getting it at is that I absolutely love this movie so much I’ve always loved it! And the music and the cinematography it’s just a gorgeous film. The music is so epic and gives me so much strength. Literally just all the emotions lol 💜 It’s beautiful I’ve watched this movie so many times I get emotional every time watching it. These 2 brothers who loved each other so much to being against each other. The pain it hurts my heart every time to watch. It’s so heartbreaking 😔💔

this is one of my favorite animated movies of all time. I just love how they told the story of Moses through the lens of two brothers and their relationship so beautifully. that scene after the death of Ramses' son where Moses breaks down in the hall is very telling; he had just lost a nephew and you can tell he was shattered by the fact that he had, in some part, caused his brother's grief. as for Ramses, I love the scene where Ramses realizes that Moses came back not to reconcile with him but to free his people. the hurt on his face that then turned to anger and resentment was so well done by the animators. and yes, Moses parted the Red Sea and in The Bible, all of the waters of Egypt were turned red with blood. Moses also does go up to Mt. Sinai and, after many days, he comes down with the Ten Commandments. thanks for the reaction, guys! 😃

Rameses' hair in the beginning was the standard haircut called the Sidelock of Youth and was used to indicate the child was the royal heir. The god Horus was portrayed with one and it indicated he was the heir of Osiris so the heirs of Pharoah also wore them.

When the Bible was translated to other languages, the names of the people were often localized as well. The easiest example is Jesus, who was almost definitely called Yeshua in his own time. I'm not entirely sure which names were changed because I'm not a Biblical scholar, but it wouldn't surprise me to hear Aaron's real name was Aardvark or something.

Something I love at the end is Rameses calling for Moses, which is a callback to when he was calling out his name when Moses left in the first place. The call is the same, but the intention is so different. The first time, he was calling out to him out of love, and the second, he was doing it out of hate. LOVE the parallel. Also, the first time Moses is running away out of shame and tries to ignore Rameses' call, but the second time, he acknowledges it and says his goodbyes. He's not running away from something anymore, he is simply going forward, and has made peace with his past. It's so good. Also yes those are the ten commandments, the movie ends bascially hours or even minutes before it all goes to sh*t so we can have our happy ending. The whole story from them racing at the beginning until the end seems to take place over the course of a couple years at most, but in the Bible, it happened over DECADES. Moses was an old guy by the time he returned to Egypt, it took a lot of time for the slaves to be allowed to leave, and if I remember correctly, they stayed out in the desert for a few more years/decades before Moses got the ten commandments.

Aside from the breathtaking animation, songs, voice acting, and visual storytelling, I'm always so impressed by how willing Dream Works was to not pull their punches. I watched this as a young kid with my young cousins and it has brutal slavery, a woman kidnapped to be r'ed by our protagonist, our protagonist killing someone (on accident) and then killing a lot of people on god's behalf, mass child death of the hebrews, plagues (including a blood river), and then mass child death of the non-Hebrew Egyptians. God in the bible doesn't mess around and it would be wrong to soften the edges for any portrayal. This movie was haunting as a kid and it certainly stuck around in my brain but I think this is a case study of how children can be trusted with more complicated and meaningful content. Outside of religious stories, there are many historical events that could be delivered to children in a way that's engaging, realistic, and memorable.

31:13- Bryce just cutting straight to the heart of something people struggle with for years! Throughout the bible, god keeps sending people places or asking them to do things, and he never lays out the whole plan for them. When he called Abraham, he didn't even tell him where he was going... just leave and go to a place that I will show you. And here Bryce is just watching an animated movie and he immediately gets it- "God said just, I'll give you my hand... I'd just show up and be like, hey, he'll take over from here"

I and many others thought the "whale" shadow we saw was in fact a whale, except for the fact that whales have horizontal tales. That creature had a vertical tale, like idk, A SHARK! It was a megalodon! Also, the sea they crossed was the Red Sea. The water he put the plague of blood into was the Nile river. And yes, the ten commandments was given to Moses by God. When he came down from the mountain everyone was worshipping a golden calf and Moses had to correct them and bring them back to God.

When Moses goes to find Rameses in the beginning, he's whistling the lullaby that his mom sang, meaning he did somehow remember the song. But most importantly, the fact he whistles it in this ordinary, everday setting shows that it's part of his life, and he's probably whistled it so many times before. And you can imagine he asked people around him where it came from, who originally sang it, and no one can tell him. He must have spent his entire life just wondering where the heck this melody came from. So when a girl he doesn't know, a SLAVE at that, claims he is her brother and SINGS the song literally no one else in his life could tell him about, he has no choice but to at least question his reality. I love that moment because you see his expression change as he goes through confusion about why she's randomly singing, then surprise as he recognizes the song, then an even bigger confusion as to how she knows it, then the doubt, and finally the sudden realization that she might be telling the truth, and the fear of what that would imply. Great sequence! I'm kind of confused how he never questioned anything, as his name literally means "saved from the water".

I'm an atheist. Anti-theist really, I tend to think religion is silly at best and downright evil at its worst. But I LOVE this movie. I even named my cat Ramesis after the Pharoah (don't get it twisted--I didn't see him as a good dude or anything, I just thought the name was so powerful and elegant and fit for my cat). I really like that they approached the story with honesty. The brutality of the slavery, Moses' original indifference to the plight of the Hebrews, the warmth and love between Ramesis and Moses as brothers, the fear of failing his father on Ramesis' part, Moses' reluctance to be the messenger, the brutality of God's punishment...Idk a lot of animated films that show children dying--I just thought it was really fleshed out and addressed the complexity of the stakes and emotions. Despite obviously not putting a lot of stock in the historical accuracy of the story, I still really enjoy the narrative. There's a French musical (theatre) adaptation of the story called "Les Dix Commandments" (the 10 Commandments) and there's this song "Mon Frere" (my brother) in it that is essentially like the one Moses and Ramesis sing together during the plagues here. It's so beautiful. It's a powerful story with powerful imagery and I think, for an animated film, it really does a great job of capturing that same emotional feeling. Anyway, yeah, great film. It really holds up. This and El Dorado are two of my favorite animated films of all time. OH! And the cast! Ralph Finnes is like the least famous person in the cast. haha. Seti (the father) was Patrick Stewart (Professor X from X-Men), Miriam was Sandra Bullock, Tzipporah was Michelle Pfiefer, Aaron was Jeff Goldblum, Tzipporah's father was Danny Glover...and they gave such great performance. I hope you liked the film!
