RIP, Andre The Giant, 1946-1993

The soundtrack is an underrated gem in this movie. It complements the action perfectly. Mark Knopfler did a fantastic job

"I have been in the revenge business so long, I don't know what to do with my life." This was Mandy Patinkin's favorite line.

It is so hard to believe that Peter Faulk's (Grandfather's) "As you wish" line was done as a PICK-UP. Meaning that they had to re-shoot the scene for one reason or another, and he was ALL ALONE..... No actor to work off of, no "feeding of the line", MINIMUM sound and camera crew and JUST the director saying "action".... and he did it in ONE SHOT with absolute perfection and complete expression of grandfatherly love. An amazing piece of acting that for the most part is completely ignored from a technical aspect, but has one of the most impactful moments of the entire movie.

Darth Vader saying "As you wish" to Tarkin, and Boba Fett to Vader, takes on a whole new meaning after seeing this movie.

Trivia: When I got around to looking them up, I found out every one of the great sword fighters’ names Inigo and Westley mentioned during their duel were real historical swordfighters/fencers, specifically of the Italian schools of fencing from around the Renaissance, many of whom wrote famous treatises on the art. - Camillo Agrippa (1553) - Rocco Bonetti (1570) - Ridolfo Capo Ferro da Cagli (1610)

The best is when you watch it with a kid, they usually totally don't get all the irony and see it as a aaaaaawesome adventure.

❤ "As you wish." ❤ Fun Fact: Cary Elwes and Mandy Patinkin performed all of their own sword-fighting after many hours of training. According to Rob Reiner, the only stunt performed by Elwes' stunt double was one flip during the "Chatty Duelists" scene. Historical Fact: There really was a "Dread Pirate Roberts" in real life. His name was Bartholomew Roberts, also known as Black Bart, who operated in the Caribbean in the early 18th century. He is reckoned by many to have been the most successful pirate of all time. Gentle Giant Fact: Despite his character Fezzik's almost-superhuman strength, André René Roussimoff's back problems at the time prevented him from actually lifting anything heavy. Robin Wright had to be attached to wires in the scene where Buttercup jumps from the castle window into Fezzik's arms because he couldn't support her himself.

You get invested because it is GREAT acting, GREAT writing and GREAT directing. The story pulls you in because everything is done so well. Thank you for another great reaction to and all time favorite movie. 😁

There are endless quotes from this movie I've been saying for 35 years. I'm really surprised you've tried to watch this before and felt it "wasn't for you". I hope you enjoy it this time. I'm not sure I've ever seen someone not enjoy this film.

Nice reaction. 🙂 This is my favorite movie of all time, but I'm a romantic. When I was a little kid my dad would tell me made-up bedtime stories and/or read them to me out of books. Starting when I was ten or eleven, and my little sister was six or seven, Dad sat in the hallway between our bedrooms and read us the Lord of the Rings as our bedtime story night after night, for months. My sis fell asleep fairly quickly, but I was entranced. That stayed with me ever since, and ever since I've loved reading out loud to friends and loved ones. Near the end of her life, as she was fighting her losing battle with cancer, I came to stay with my dad and step-mother for ten days. She'd heard me (and Dad for that matter) read out loud before and always loved it, so she had me read to her and Dad every evening to help her relax before bed, and often during the day too. She had me come back with her for a chemo treatment and I read to her while she endured it. She laughed a few times during the treatment and I didn't know why, but as we left she told me that though she kept her eyes closed for most of the time every time she opened them she'd see that all the nurses had drifted down to the end of their counter closest to us and were watching and listening as I read aloud to her. 😀 So thanks, Dad, for teaching me the joy of reading aloud to others. I'm glad that that gift brought some comfort to my stepmom, and to my dad too. Two weeks from today will mark the first anniversary of his death, and I'm still not quite settled to that being real. But the lessons he taught me keep him alive in a way, and reading aloud and storytelling are a way I try to remember and honor him.

This Is Spinal Tap is another gem from Rob Reiner. He even plays a part in the mockumentary.

The Grandfather in the story was the great actor Peter Falk who is best known for his role as the detective Columbo. Montoya was played by Mandy Patinkin who was great in Sunday In The Park With George. The character who brought him back to life was Billy Crystal and the grandson was played by Fred Savage the star of Wonder Years.

So many people miss that Inigo bites off a piece of the miracle pill before putting it in Westley's mouth. That's how he's able to come back after all the stabs. That and his willpower.

Great reactions/comments - Princess Bride is on my list of MUST SEE movies and definitely one of my all time favs. So good, so clean, so pure ... just priceless.

My sons are 24 & 21 and anytime they complained growing up, I’d always say “life is pain, anyone who tells you different is selling something” We love this movie 😎

I highly recommend reading the novel, which is just as fun and funny, but also different than the film. It's a perfect adaptation, and the framing device in the novel in some cases is even better than the Fred Savage / Peter Falk framing device in the movie.

Inconceivable!

I had such a movie crush on Buttercup as a kid, and Peter Falk has perfect grandpa energy. If I ever get to be a grandpa, I'm just gonna copy this guy.

Christopher Guest, who plays the 6 finger man, plays Nigel in Spinal Tap, another Rob Reiner movie. Also, Guest is married to Jamie Lee Curtis. Oh, and he's an actual English Lord. Interesting guy.

Peter Falk was a great actor. You should do some reactions of him in the Columbo television series from the 70s. It is a fun murder mystery series that he is famous for.

The reason the story works has to be credited to the original writer, THE quintessential Hollywood screenwriter/novelist of all time, William Goldman. The reason the movie works is how much Rob Reiner loves the source book. And also, of course, that wonderful cast he assembled. It's just a classic. I'm so glad you enjoyed it. Really fun reaction.

Now on your Rob Reiner journey you need to see This is Spinal Tap a rockumentary, ah make that mockumentary about fictional rock band Spinal Tap starring Christopher Guest, Harry Shearer, Micheal McKean and a host of others.

For me, the final line is the most perfect of all time. There are other classics of course. Casablanca, King Kong, Chinatown, and many others. My 3 favorite all time last lines of a movie are all from Rob Reiner films. This Is Spinal Tap, Stand By Me, and this one.

Mandy Patinkin, who played Inigo Montoya, stated that he drew on his most painful memory for motivation: the death of his father. When he was talking to the Six Fingered Man, he imagined he was talking to the cancer that claimed his father’s life. Thus, the real emotion behind the line, “I want my father back, you s.o.b.”

Don't be too hard on the princess for the fire swamp. Remember that it is satirizing fairy tales and so the roles of the characters are very much in place. She's the helpless princess and he's the dashing swashbuckler. Also, if she had quickly killed it with the sword then we don't get to drag out watching him wrestle with that wonderfully funny rat costume :D

This movie is for everyone boys and girls it is such a great movie. This movie is based on a book. The writer of the book also wrote the script of the movie . The scene with Westley and the six finger man when the six finger man hit him in the head was real and the actor who plays Wesley had to go to the hospital. here was real spark between the main actors in real life Westley and Buttercup that's why it works. Andre the giant used his big hands to protect Robin Wright (Buttercup ) head when she was cold on the set. You should also see Wilow, Lady Hawk, The Never Ending Story and The Labyrinth 1986. This is one of the movies with an epic soundtrack like Conan The Barbarian or Highlander which you should also see. one of my favorite quotes from this movie "“We are men of action, lies do not become us.”"

You cannot go to any type of convention or meeting where they have you put your name on the "Hello, my name is" name tag without seeing at least one person put Inigo Montoya. Another classic Rob Reiner film is the mockumentary "Spinal Tap". It started the whole mockumentary genre of film.

The score (rarely spoken of) is curiously simplistic...on purpose. It's intended to sound like a video game's music from the 80's...because we're seeing the book through Fred Savage's eyes...who just wanted to play a video game at the start. (The "music" to the baseball game at the beginning isn't from the actual game...it was added to match the score.)

On reading stories: Yes I remember my mom reading me stories of Star Wars and Superman when I was very little and as an adult realizing that she had no interest in those but she read them because I liked them.

Whar's not to like here? It was my daughters' fave growing up. Surehanded direction (Rob Reiner); witty script (Oscar-winning William Goldman of 'Butch Cassidy' fame, adapted from a bedtime story told to his daughters, one of whom wanted a princess, the other a bride); fine ensemble cast, both the principals and the cameos; inspired casting (non-actor Andre the Giant); and not least, the gorgeous soundtrack (Brit guitar hero/composer Mark Knopfler, with a romantic theme 'Storybook Love' sung by the late Willy De Ville). You're not the first to pick up on Buttercup's apparent passivity in the fire swamp scene, strange considering her eternal devotion to 'my sweet Westley', and willing to die rather than lose him again. A whole essay possible in there on the 'princess helpless swoon' factor. Inigo's invulnerability to Count Rogen's dagger also never quite sat well with me. I've found American viewers are quick to appreciate their countrymen's various cameos, Billy Crystal, Peter Falk et al.,but sometimes overlook two veritable Brit comedy legends in Mel Smith (the dungeonmaster) and Peter Cook ('mawwage' - edited out here). Sadly both are no longer with us. Thanks again Madison. Nice change of genre, refreshing.

FOR INIGO: I love that for each wound he received from the 6 fingered man, he gave back. the Face, the Arms, then the killing blow to the stomach. "Miracle Max and his Wife " (Billy Crystal and Carol Kane) were so terrific they could have had their own movie! During Shooting, Robin was getting cold in those Light Robes. So Andre would Place his hand on her head to keep her warm... He truly WAS a Gentleman Giant!

As some of the other commenters have mentioned, This is Spinal Tap is definitely worth watching. Actor Christopher Guest who played Count Rugen (the six fingered man) is one of the writers and actors of This is Spinal Tap.

People often pass over this one on first look as silly. Then they watch it and realize it's a fantastic movie. If you want something from Rob Reiner that's different still, you should watch Spinal Tsp (another often culturally referenced movie)

The similarities between Prince Humperdink and Lord Farquad (Shrek 1) can't be a coincidence. As others have said This is Spinal Tap is another one to watch.

I love this movie! Its basically the definition of a family film. Its something everyone can love and for all ages

Billy Crystal...all his movies are great! He told THE best story once...being in a restaurant, sitting at a table. He gets his food, starts eating. A guy at the next table says to him," u know this food is great, but u know what would be better? When they cut the meat really Leeeean, it's nice and leeeean!" So funny!!

It's called chameleon affect. I have a friend from Alabama that has a heavy southern accent. I copy it every time we hang out.

The Princess Bride is one of the best fairy tales, in the same way that Galaxy Quest is one of the best Star Trek movies.

A Rob Reiner film you need to watch is "This Is Spinal Tap". Done as a documentary of a rock band where the main characters actually play all the music. They even toured and I saw them and it was such a good/fun show. Also, the grandpa in this movie was the legendary Peter Falk. He was Columbo in the old tv series but in movies as well. One you should check out is "The In-Laws" with him and Alan Arkin. Just make sure you watch the original and not the lame remake.

Every adult who’s ever read to a child or showed them a favorite old movie, has had that same experience as the grandfather: “Yes, you’re very smart. Now shut up.” 😂🤣

"I don't think that's how it works" This is a fantasy film.

Don't worry, you're not the only one who initially thought this movie wasn't for them. I first saw it when I was 14 and while I didn't hate it, I didn't think it was anything special either. Fast-forward 5 years and I watched it again and was struck by a) how much of it I actually remembered and b) how stinking FUNNY this movie is. Somehow a lot of the humor failed to land with me the first time around, which is honestly baffling in hindsight (and yeah, I was a little annoyed with Buttercup initially as well, but not every heroine has to be a badass fighter). Anyway, that second viewing was when I fell in love with this movie and it's been my favorite ever since. Oh, and as you have no doubt noticed since watching this movie, there is a Princess Bride quote for nearly every occasion.

The real reason he's limping is he broke his big toe between takes and when the count hits Wesley on the head Carey had to be rushed to hospital with concussion

A perfect film. I'm sure it's been mentioned but when Mandy Patinkin was filming his own father was dying (or I believe finally succumbed to ) cancer and his justifiable revenge line "I want my father back you son of a bitch!!!" really knocks you out (and sadly every time I've seen it since my own dad lost his battle over a decade ago truly hits home). Glad you gave this another shot to re-watch Mads. Also Reiner & the screenwriter William Goldman (who adapted this novel) would go on to do the adaptation of MISERY.

So glad you enjoyed this one, Madison. But honestly, how could you not?

The question everyone wants to know when it comes to your novel, _Gone Outlaw:_ is it a kissing book?

If you're not handy with a sword, you can actually do more harm than good - the sword might have gone into the wrong object. Buttercup is not good at physical defense or offence. But she has other gifts: she speaks truth to Vezzini and Humperdinck - the only non-yes person in his circle. She sacrifices her happiness to save Westley from the archers. She sees Humperdinck's fear and tells him so: there's an untapped well of observation in her that Westley will likely foster. So if she can't stab a rat, I give her some slack. There are other things.

If you ever read the novel, there is a great framing device around the story like this movie has but it's more in depth. The main story is pretty close.

Let's ask the real questions here. Buttercup seems to have no family so how exactly has she kept that farm? How can she afford a farm boy? How did he end up there? Where does he sleep? And, most importantly, why can't she reach that damn pitcher? This film is deeper than "2001: A Space Odyssey" and "Jacob's Ladder" combined.

Amazing! This is a favorite movie of mine. And I just realized, many woman reactors do not believe that Wesley was killed by the Dread Pirate Roberts. Most male reactors do.

I would have loved a sequel where they follow Inigo Montoya as he becomes the new Dread Pirate Roberts and Wesley could have played the part of his 2nd in command to help convince everyone that he's legit. Imagine that.

Not to take this story too seriously, but remember this: though it's only been several minutes for us, for Buttercup it's been 5 years since hearing Westley was dead; and she does think that he is dead. It isn't .... inconceivable .... in a story like this that the man could actually be the Dread Pirate Roberts, bearing a superficial resemblance to Westley. In addition, this man is not behaving like Westley at all, so there's that too.
