If I remember from the book, Buttercup didn't marry Humperdink by CHOICE. Humperdink was looking for a bride and Buttercup's parents offered her to him
I got eo many Easter eggs on this movie. Not only did I do editing on this. But I know some stories on Andre (rest in peace) that guy could drink a lot of beer. I can drink a lot of whiskey. Funny editing on your video. Btw. The replay bits. Nice
A few years ago there was talk of doing a "Princess Bride Reboot". Cary Elwes was asked his opinion about remaking the movie. His response could not have been better. He saud "There is a shortgae of perfect movies in this world, it would be a pity to ruin this one" The talks of a reboot stopped immediately.
Check out the one made during the pandemic from home movie footage by a variety of stars. It’s Cary Elwes approved and I’ll leave it at that. :-) That and reactions like this always send me back to watch the whole thing. Such a wonderful film!
@@ElisabethKisselstein So true, that was amazing, and I have to say, hands down the BEST performance in that has to be Jason Segel, i swear if I didn't know it wasn't, I would swear that they just dubbed over his part with the original actor's audio. His impression is mind blowing. I won't say who he plays in the to avoid spoilers, but if you've seen it, you know who he was and how mind-blowingly perfect his impression was.
At no point did I ever think the Grandfather was Wesley (there's a slight several hundred year gap between Wesley's time and an Atari). I think the Grandfather was just saying I love you to his grandkid :)
I had never thought or seen someone think that they were the same person and then today this is the second d video I’ve seen that’s thought or said that there the same person. Lol.
Well sure, but that's no Atari. That's a Commodore 64. Even the Atari 7800 didn't offer graphics like that, the best graphics I remember in an Atari Baseball game was "Realsports Baseball" and it looked nothing like that.
Great facial expressions Tori! So the grandfather is not supposed to be Westley, although you can certainly interpret the movie in that way if you want. "As you wish" means "I love you" in this movie. He's telling his grandson that he loves him, which is still the sweetest, most wholesome way to end a movie that I've ever seen.
While obviously the grandfather is not Westley, my take on this is that this family IS the descendants of Westley and Buttercup. Consider that all kids eventually wonder about their parent's histories. The story starts out as just another 'how I met your mother/father' that because of how purely epic the tale is gets told again and again. Eventually it's written down to preserve for posterity and then a few generations later gets published. The copy of the book the grandfather reads looks like it could be a first edition, perhaps even THE first copy. And thus is the story preserved.
I love how the near universal reaction to the Prince is 'hey, he looks like Lord Farquaad...' They did a really good job referencing this guy in Shrek, if so many people can make the retroactive connection.
My favorite tidbit I've read is that the movie had been shot except for the Grandpa/Grandson scenes. Andre went to the set just so Fred could meet him and answered all his wrestling questions. Andre sent him a Christmas card every year until he passed and he looked forward to it the most.
Andre the Giant loved working on this movie. Everyone was extremely kind and loved being around him. He was so gentle but also had severe back pain that he couldn't hold Buttercup in his arms without help. A great human being.
he nearly didn't perform the role either. When they first tried to get him in it they found he was scheduled to perform a wrestling match in japan in which he was getting paid a fortune for it. Luckily the match got cancelled and Andre was able to perform the role
That "As you wish" is just Grandpa telling his grandson he loves him. Knowing the way my mom loves our kids made me realize the deep love grandparents can have for their grandchildren and made me feel emotional (my dad unfortunately passed away years ago). It's a great ending.
Inigo and Fessicks friendship is one of the best in cinema When Vincinni mocks and makes Fessick feel bad Inigo begins the rhyming game to cheer Fessick up and annoy Vincinni When Fessick sees Ingio in trouble with the Brute squad he immediately helps his friend and sobers him up They are adorable.
I love that Tori recognized Andre The Giant immediately. Most people don't. He expressions during the movie remind me of people who saw this in the theater. (Me included) My favorite phrase from this movie is one a lot of people love: " My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father, prepare to die." Miracle Max and his wife are played by Billy Crystal and Carol Kane, two very funny actors in the 80's. Have fun storming the castle. 😊
@@tonyberezowski7859 It's a famous caveat attributed to many famous military leaders including MacArthur, Mongomery, and Eisenhower (all comically anachronistic to the period setting of "The Princess Bride"). I don't know if anyone really knows who said it first. I mentioned it because Vietnam was a land war where I lost part of my right leg. Hence my comparison to "gallows humor."
The grandfather isn't Wesley. It was just a nice way to bring back the phrase from the story at the end of the movie. I've read the director brought back the grandfather after the movie finished filming to re-read the line because he wasn't happy with his original delivery.
Fun fact: Vizzini is played by Wallace Shawn, who would later voice act for several Pixar movies. His roles include Rex in the Toy Story franchise and the Gilbert Huph (Bob Parr’s boss) in The Incredibles. Fun fact #2: the miracle worker is played by Billy Crystal, who would later play Mike Wyzowski in Monsters Inc
Favorite Line: "We'll never survive! Nonsense, you're only saying that because no one ever has." Line I quote the most: "Have fun storming the castle!"
According to the story, "The Princess Bride" is a very old book, old enough that no, the grandfather can't be Westley. Interestingly, the country Prince Humperdinck rules is named Florin. The florin was a golden coin that was minted in Florence between 1252 and 1533. The kingdom Prince Humperdinck wants to go to war with is named Guilder. The word "guilder" is an English translation of the Dutch and German word "gulden," originally shortened from the High German phrase "guldin pfenninc," which means "gold penny" - another name for a florin. Which should tell you all you need to know about Florin, Guilder, and Prince Humperdinck's desire to start a war.
I definitely thought the Grandpa was Westley when I was a really little kid, but when I got older I realized "Wait a sec, that makes no sense. The story took place in medieval times and the Grandpa is alive in the 1980s." It's a fun thought though, and very sweet that the Grandpa also used it to mean I love you.
I used to wonder how Inigo could sustain the knife wound and the the stab of each arm, and still defeat the Count. Someone in the comments of another reaction pointed out how Inigo kisses the miracle pill right before he gives it to Wesley, thereby giving him some of it’s healing powers.
Since this movie came out, the Fire Swamp has become one the most popular Honeymoon destinations in the world. It was very fun watching this with you both.
Great reaction as usual you two. So glad you watched this classic. The theme behind the theme was sometimes as young kids we don't see grandparents as fun. The whole story you can see the grandson getting more and more invested in the story and how his grandpa tells the tale. He realizes how wonderful it is to hear the tale told by his grandpa. It hits in the end as when the grandson asks his grandpa to come back and read. As one commenter said, like "as you wish" was grandpa telling his grandson I love you but so great it was line from story. This is a beautiful movie about love and that our grandparents bring vast amounts of knowledge and lore to our lives. They are our are history :)
"Hello, My name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die!! "Stop saying that!!". 😮 There are some great performances in this film. Andre The Giant as Fezzig, Wallace Shawn as Vezzini, Mandy Patankin as Inigo, Carey Elwes as Wesley, Robin Wright Penn as Buttercup, Billy Crystal as Miracle Max. 😂
I just looked her up and Margery Mason who played the Ancient Booer was NOT the voice of Aughra in the Dark Crystal-that was voiced by Frank Oz-but she did play the food trolley lady in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
She is jenny, in Forrest Gump!RIP to Andre the Giant! Billy Crystal as miracle max, his must watches are, When Harry met Sally, Throw momma from the Train, City Slickers 1-2. He got a laugh when a guy sitting at a table near him in a restaurant asked Billy what he ordered. Then he told Billy he himself got a BLT. And then told Billy," it's great when the bacon is lean, it's nice and leeeeeeen!" Mind blown...what if grandpa is a offspring of Wesley or Indigo? 😮😮😮
"I want my father back you son of a bitch." Mandy Patinkin said in an interview that his father had died the year before he did this movie. When he said that line he was saying it to the cancer that killed his father. That is why it is so powerful.
I love how they snuck in a "go f yourself", when the member of the Brute Squad yells "Ho there" at Inigo and Inigo says "keep your joder", in Spanish, joder means "to f*ck" so telling him to keep it is telling him to f himself.
The woman who played the ancient boo-er in the crowd was an actress named Margery Mason. She had a long career in film and TV. You might know her from the Harry Potter movie, The Goblet of Fire. She was the sweets trolly lady.
"Good bye boys. Good luck storming the castle." -Miracle Max "It'll take a miracle... Good bye." Thanks ladies for your energy in your reactions. I enjoy watching y'all comment on the movies. You're entertaining as always. Keep on keeping on and Gritos.
I dunno if anyone else has answered this, but I haven't seen Dark Crystal since I was about 5 so I didn't remember Aughra's voice, so I pulled up imdb. Aughra was voiced by Frank Oz, which is funky. But that means the booing lady (who's credited as "The Ancient Booer" xD) was someone else, so I checked. Her name is Margery Mason, and she died in 2014, aged 100 :) (Frank Oz is still alive) I love imdb, such rabbitholes I find myself falling in xD
You asked about favorite lines, so I'll throw one out there that I got a lot of mileage out of the last few years. "Oh no, it's just that [masks are] terribly comfortable. I think everyone will be wearing them in the future." e: No, the woman booing wasn't the voice of Aughra from The Dark Crystal. The voice of Aughra was done by Billie Whitelaw, who you might recognize as the second nanny for Damien in The Omen (1976). The booing woman was played by Margery Mason, who has been a major staple in various British mystery shows. But you might also recognize her as the woman running the food trolley in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
My favorite RttM ladies watching my favorite movie? Sign me up cos I'm here for it! And, yeah, I'm here for Tori's facial expressions. 😀 Love your reactions! And Hannah's pouts are just too cute too. 🙂 Great zoom work to the editing team too. 🙂 Some of my fondest memories relate to this movie. When I was 22 I met a young woman and started a long distance relationship with her as she lived in NY State and I lived in Tennessee (I met her when she was in town visiting her aunt, uncle, and cousins who I vaguely knew through friends of mine). We loved this movie and watched it frequently when I, on a whim, moved up to live near her for the winter (literally made the decision after working a double one night, stayed up all night packing, and drove the 14 hours north the next morning. I was impulsive). We would quote it back and forth to each other often, and always enjoyed it. The relationship lasted three years, but we're still great friends now 30 years later, and we'll still drop lines from this movie into our conversations. 😀 When my best friend got married when I was 25, I was the best man and two of our friends were groomsmen. We were standing around at the rehearsal in our spots the day before the wedding when one of the groomsmen suddenly said, "Mawwiage." Both groomsmen and I burst out laughing, but the next day during the ceremony we couldn't make eye contact with each other, or even look in each other's direction for fear that we'd burst out laughing thinking "Mawwaige." 😀 Grandpa's "As you wish." still brings a tear to my eye at the end of the movie. He wasn't Westley of course, just using his way of saying "I love you." to his grandson and telling him he'd be back to read the book the next day. Such an awesome movie on so many levels! I also love that the entire swordfight was done by Cary Elwes (Westley) and Mandy Patinkin (Inigo), except for Westley's gymnastic leap from the heights. They practiced and practiced so hard for that and they made it look amazing! Cary Elwes wrote a memoir of making the movie called "As You Wish" that is a wonderful read. Highly recommended!
When I was a kid my aunt and uncle had a satellite dish (a big deal at the time) and sent us VHS tapes of a bunch of movies. There were several good ones, but we absolutely couldn't get enough of Princess Bride, Ghostbusters and Spaceballs. All these years later and I just realized that Inigo's going to be a pirate who can't swim.
Thanks for the great reaction. The Princess Bride is a brilliant comedic novel, the screenplay for the movie was written by the author of the novel. The conceit of the novel is that 'The Princess Bride' is a boring novel about Florin court politics so the grandfather is taking elements and making up the quirky story we see in the film. There are even more layers to the satire if you want to read the book by William Goldman. So, it is an interesting question whether the grandfather is Wesley since he is making up the story as he goes.
When this movie came out it wasnt a big hit. Several years later Carey was ordering a burger at a restaurant and the waitress asked how he wanted it. He said medium rare and she replied "as you wish" which helped him realize the movie was popular.
The kid in the movie played by Fred Savage who starred in a sitcom at the same age: Wonder Years. It's about a middle class family in the 1960's as they deal with work, school, and the beginning of the Vietnam War. It's funny and heartwarming at the same time.
I've yet to find a better example of comedic timing than when Westley says "Rodents of Unusual Size? I don't think they exist," and the R.O.U.S. *immediately* flies into his face from off-screen.
Great reactions, ladies! I like how often Tori looks more shocked than she laughs. 😄 Now that Tori's finally seen The Princess Bride, you two may want to check its TV Tropes pages. You might be surprised how many tropes are named just from quotes from the film.
The best swordfight on film. Cary Elwes and Mandy Patinkin Trained for months with the best sword trainer in Hollywood. When it came time to film the scene Rob Reiner was sorely disappointed. They were so good, that the fight lasted mere seconds. He forced them to slow down so it would look more "realistic". IMO one of the best films of all time.
The actress playing the woman booing in Buttercup's dream is NOT the same person who voiced Aughra in "the Dark Crystal." This woman was player by Margery Mason while Aughra was voiced by Frank Oz
Margery Mason was the old hag "booing" Princess Buttercup.According to IMDB the voice of Aughra in the Dark Crystal was Frank Oz who was also the voice of Yoda and worked the Yoda puppet in the Star Wars movies where Yoda was not CGI
Inigo Montoya: "Is very strange. I have been in the revenge business so long, now that it's over, I don't know what to do with the rest of my life." Westley: "Have you ever considered piracy? You'd make a wonderful Dread Pirate Roberts." This is my favorite quote.
One of those rare super-charming movies that's truly sprinkled with fairy dust. I walked past a huge London theatre today and see that Mandy 'Inigo Montoya' Patinkin leads in a hit musical show called simply Mandy Patinkin Live In Concert. I might have to see it :)
This movie did not do well at the box office when it first came out. The young unknown actors remained unknown and continued to struggle to find work. Years later, Cary Elwes (Wesley) was in New York City going from audition to audition and stopped in a Diner for some lunch. He ordered a hamburger. The waitress asked him how he wanted it cooked. He said, "medium rare." She smiled and said, "As you wish." That's how Cary found out that the movie was doing much better as a video tape rental than it had in theaters...
@@RuntotheMovies I've seen Cary tell it a few times. Here's a short clip of him telling it: ru-vid.comUgkxZAAZTFe0ZpBMyvsyfF_phsUT1U0exkE8?si=d__qIM4jL3fJ52Hg
Omg when Tori said he reminds me of Lord Farquad. I started lmao because I always thought of that he looked like Lord Farquad lmao too funny. A movie you all should watch with Cary Elwes is Robin Hood Men In Tights which is a parody of Robin Hood Prince of Thieves. I know you did a reaction to Robin Hood Prince of Thieves. Robin Hood Men in Tights is hilarious
"We are men of action. Lies do not become us." All others were basicly there. Except for "Fessic! Are there rocks ahead?" "If there are, we'll soon be dead!" ^_^
I don't think I saw this first run in Santa Barbara in 1987, pretty sure I rented it a couple years later w/ my GF and remember saying: "Hey, that's Kelly Capwell (Robin Wright), from daytime soap opera: 'Santa Barbara.'
Max, editor, here. When I was a kid, every adult around me was obsessed with Santa Barbara. I didn't get to see this movie until I was an adult but I instantly recognized Robyn Wright.
When I was growing up, I watched this movie a lot because of Andre the Giant. I was a huge WWF (aka WWE) fan. Andre was loved by the cast on set. He was the "gentle giant." During scenes at night, it would be freezing cold, and Andre would put his hand on top of Robin Wright's (Buttercup) head and cover as much of her face as he could with his fingers to keep her warm. Billy Crystal (Miracle Max) became friends with Andre and with a writing partner wrote a script of movie Billy and Andre could star in together. It was called "My Giant." Unfortunately, Andre passed away before they could make the movie. Billy Crystal would make the movie with another actor, but I don't think it did very well.
I am convinced that Tori is the best reactor on the Internet. Her facial expressions are out of this world and she seems 100% authentic. All the RthM girls do. Thank you for making these videos for us.
"There is a shortage of perfect movies in the world. T'would be a pity to remake this one!" Thankfully, it sounds like the plans to do a remake (or prequel, or sequel, or whatever) has been abandoned. Hopefully for good. One of the most massively quotable movies with so many great, memorable lines! My favorite line (which I still use to this day) is "You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.". (Although, "Have fun storming the castle!" is a good contender.)
I love that you tossed bert in there for "the machine" ever since I heard that story for the first time I've always pictured that when its talked about. "The machiiiiiine"
When the video was being recorded and the girls said, "The Machine" one after the other, I knew instantly that I had to insert him into the edit. It was just too perfect. I'm glad you enjoyed it. 😸
