Mandy Patankin (Inigo Montoya) lost his father to cancer around the time of filming & especially channeled his grief at that loss into his performance of the final fight with Count Rugen (6-fingers) & imagining that he was fighting the cancer that took his father. That's why there is so much feeling in his final words: "I want my father back, you son of a bitch!"

Apparently he got so into the fight scene with that mindset that the actor who played Count Rugen (Christopher Judge) got genuinely concerned for his own life. Edit: Christoper Guest, not Christopher Judge. But check out Christopher Judge's body of work too.

No matter how many times I have seen this movie, it is still amazing at how Peter Faulk delivered that last line of "As you wish" with such compassion and glee in his eyes, that you actually felt like it was a grandfather saying it to their grandson. But when you consider that it was a "pick-up shot" (Meaning they had to redo the scene), he was basically in the room ALONE with nobody to work off of except the camera looking at him. It is amazing how someone can find that depth of talent that they can summon all of it up for something as simple as saying only "one line" and yet have it impact you on so many levels at the same time.

Exactly. It's the inversion of the classic shell game. You don't lose the shell game when you pick the wrong shell. You lose when you assume the pea is still there at all, and that you know enough to pick the right one, instead of it being sleight-of-handed back into the carny's pocket in that split-second you looked away. That's why it's called being conned. Con, short for confidence. Not the scammer's confidence that their trick is concealed, but the mark's confidence they can beat it. Vizzini lost the battle of wits by even accepting it in the first place. By being arrogant enough to think his superior intellect would win out. By assuming he was too smart to be tricked. Vizzini "gave everything away" to Westley when he boasted that he couldn't be outsmarted. By not hearing the importance of Westley's carefully chosen words: not "Which Goblet Has The Poison In It" but "Where Is The Poison", a question with the hidden third answer of In Both.

I highly recommend the novel, it's a fun read. The screenplay and novel THE PRINCESS BRIDE were both written by William Goldman. He's a legend in screenwriting, very admired, and helped many careers. He asked his daughters what kind of story they wanted to read: one said a Princess, the other said a Bride. He meshed it together and wrote the novel. The way grandpa reads the story in the movie is very much how it's written, Goldman is merely telling you the story. Goldman wrote the role of Fezzik with his favorite wrestler, Andre the Giant, in mind. Goldman also wrote MARATHON MAN (novel and screenplay) which has the most disturbing torture scene ever that will put you off dentists... also known as "Is it safe?" You'll probably never react to it so you can watch a clip. It's safe.
@adaddinsane
@adaddinsane 2 года назад
He also wrote BUTCH CASSIDAY AND THE SUNDANCE KID, MISERY, ALL THE PERSIDENT'S MEN ... the list goes on. Only Goldman could write a film that breaks a dozen screenwriting rules and make it work. Which film? THE PRINCESS BRIDE.

I forced my boys to watch this movie who had both the same reaction as the grandson before watching and after watching. Inigo and Fezzik are one of the two great duos in movie history. One with great sword skill, one with brute strength, but, despite being rogues, they both live by a code of honor. The rhyme interaction shortly after they board the ship is one of the most wholesome friendship scenes ever.

Mel Smith (the jailer) is another successful British comedian, most known for his partnership with Griff Rhys-Jones. Carol Kane (Miracle Max's wife) was a very successful comic actress, known for " Young Frankenstein" (which is a hoot) and, on TV, "Taxi" opposite the late great Andy Kaufman. Christopher Guest (Rugen the six-fingered) is most famous for being Nigel in "This is Spînal Tap", but he has a looong career, going back to his television work on "Laverne & Shirley". Chris Sarandon (Prince Humperdinck) on the other hand, is better known for dramatic roles, such as in "Dog Day Afternoon". Well, he's *best* known for being Susan Sarandon's little brother, but you know what I mean.

Andre "The Giant" was very popular with the cast and crew on set. All of them tell great stories about working with him. Robin Wright (Buttercup) tells a story that when they were all filming at night it would get very cold, and so to keep her warm Andre would put his massive hand on her head to cover her and her face. Billy Crystal (Miracle Max) was in fact so taken with Andre that he co-wrote a movie for them to star in together called "My Giant". Unfortunately, Andre passed away before they could make it. Due to Andre's condition, what made him so big, he was told that he would probably not live to the age of 40. He truly lived his life to fullest, becoming a professional wrestler and traveling the world. He was such an attraction as a wrestler that he at one time was the highest paid professional athlete on the planet. And he proved the doctors wrong surviving to the age of 43.

He had a strict moral compass and would beat the hell out of other wrestlers like Macho Man Randy Savage (because he abused his wife) and other wrestlers who treated jobbers badly (jobbers are wrestlers who were booked to lose a match). During the filming of this movie, he let out the most tremendous, reverberating fart ever expressed in human history, so loud and long it brought production to a screeching halt. After it ended, Rob Reiner, the director, asked him "Are you alright?" Andre turned to him, grinned, and said "I am now, boss" Love that man.

OK, he probably doesn't actually kill many people, as we saw that he let Inigo and Fezzik live even though they were trying to kill him (he killed Vizzini, but that evil weasel had it coming), but he still robbed people and entire ships. With a name of terror it's all to avoid a fight and get the booty. So to resist is to become captive and certain death vs buying passage in his territory. 3 years as a pirate under Roberts, killing then too. A top reaction to a top movie. Dasha did it again (made my day). What's not to like about this gem? Great balance of romance, action and comedy, snappy screenplay (William Goldman), brilliant direction (Rob Reiner), all-star cast, both mains and cameos, and the inspired casting of non-actor Andre the Giant is the cherry on top (unless you count pro wrestling as acting). Loved by several generations now, starting with me, my own kids and grandkids.

Vizzini wasn't being serious with all of his "logic". It was just a distraction leading up to the moment when he got Westley to look away, and that's when his plan really started. He switched glasses to fool Westley, and then made a random choice and watched closely to judge Westley's reaction. When he saw that Westley would gladly and without fear drink from the glass he was given, he knew that he (Vizzini) must actually have the safe glass because they were switched! It wasn't a bad plan at all, under the circumstances, actually. He just didn't imagine that both glasses were poisoned and that Westley was immune to the poison.

So many stories and tiny details and funny moments in this one… a favorite is the moment Fezzik and Inigo are reunited, Fezzik still rhymes the words Inigo says. “I am waiting for Vizinni…” “You truly are a meanie.” “It’s you.” “True.” Adorable. If you ever want to hear the behind the scenes stories, I highly recommend Cary Elwes’ book As You Wish. He tells the tales of being cast as Westley, spending time with the cast and crew, and a lot of stories about the lovely man Andre Roussimoff, or Andre the Giant.

The grandfather, Peter Faulk, played a popular detective in a TV series called Colombo. He always acted good natured but kind of clueless while tracking down the killer, until he came back with just one more question that showed he'd figured out the mystery and was ready to pin it in the killer.

This is my favorite movie of all time. I've suggested this several times in my comments.....Fun fact Wallace Shawn had a terrifying fear of heights. During the cliffs of insanity scene he had a panic attack. Andre the giant hugged him and said "I won't let anything bad happen to you" and after that to this day his fear of heights is gone.

1:02 - That's the game Hardball for the Commodore 64, although they dubbed in different sound effects. 1:14 - Fred Savage. One year later, he went on to play the main character in the TV show The Wonder Years for six seasons. 1:20 - Peter Falk plays the grandfather. He played the title character in the long-running detective show, Columbo. The show was popular enough in America that the name "Columbo" became probably the second most well-known detective name after Sherlock Holmes. 3:32 - That's Andre the Giant. No special effects here, he really was that big. He had a big career in wrestling. 22:30 - Billy Crystal as Miracle Max and Carol Kane as his wife.

Some fun trivia. The book the grandfather is reading is not the actual book, he's just reading the highlights and skipping parts that the grandson would find interesting. Supposedly there are three chapters about how Buttercup packed and what she packed to move to the castle. The swordfight was the last scene filmed, the two actors worked with the choreographer and kept making it longer and better and Director Rob Reiner basically just let them create the scene and made no changes to it. It was at the time the longest and most complex fight scene of its type. Andre the Giant was apparently just the best person to work with, and ALL of the cast members loved him. Miracle Max was almost totally adlibbed, and poor Wesley kept laughing during the scene causing retakes that would be slightly different adlibs that caused more laughter. The fall down the slope, was basically the same stuntman for both, and was also somewhat unscripted.

Everybody loves The Princess Bride. It's one of those movies that puts a smile on your face. The cast is fantastic too, not many are really big name actors, but quite a few are well known for other reasons. It's always fun to see how many you can recognise. e.g: - The Giant was Andre the Giant a wrestler famous for his huge size. - The granddad is Peter Falk who is most famous for playing Colombo a long running detective series. - The grandson was Fred Savage best known for a 80s series called The Wonder Years. - Miracle max is an American stand up comedian and comic actor. - The Albino was Mel Smith a famous British Comedian who was part of the pioneering alternative comedy sketch show 'Not the Nine O'clock News' in the 80s, along with Rowan Atkinson, Griff Rhys Jones and Pamela Stephenson (Billy Connolly's wife). - The Bishop was Peter Cook who was part of a famous British comedy duo with Dudley Moore in the 60s.

The man who played the giant, Fez I think they called him, was Andre' Rene' Roussimoff, he was 121.92cm tall. Better known as 'Andre The Giant' he was a well loved figure in America for a long time. Originally from France he came to America and had an amazing wrestling career. He didn't do much acting but always wanted to. He said that this movie was one of his proudest accomplishments. Sadly he passed away a few years later.

William Goldman's brother, James Goldman, is also a well-known playwright and screenwriter. A film of his I'm sure you'd enjoy is _The Lion in Winter_ (1968). It is an historical drama about Henry II of England, his wife Eleanor of Aquitaine, and their three children, Richard Lionheart, Geoffrey, and John. Henry is played by Peter O'Toole, Eleanor by Katherine Hepburn in her third Oscar winning performance, and Richard by Anthony Hopkins in his first film role. It's a marvelous mix of Medieval political drama, family drama, and witty dialogue.
