i am just getting into fashion at 15, and wanting to understand how and why clothes are designed the way they are. and it can be pretty daunting stepping into a world that seems so big and scary. but your videos are very simple for me to follow and get a good understanding of. thank you so much!
Never realized how McQueen also liked to reference Escher, but then it feels like it makes too much sense for his cerebral tendencies that it shouldn't be a surprise
These videos are fantastic! I came here with the intention of learning how to style normal outfits and this is one of the best sets of videos I've seen for that purpose because it puts me in the mindset of a designer or stylist who uses the tools along with principles to create something nice, unique, and true to me. Thank you!
Bit late here but that mcqueen dress breakdown was impeccable, you really explained why it works so well. I'm just reading gods and kings and my love for mcqueen grows every time I read a new chapter. Thanks a lot !
Let me know in the comments if you found this video helpful, or if you still have any questions about the elements and principles of design for fashion. Thanks!
Thank you! I leaned so much from your Elements and Principles of Design. These two videos are exactly what I needed to master these basic art principles.
I love the way you dissected that last dress.... even though it was not one that I liked, I enjoyed your interpretation of it and explaining the proportion and use of colour and shape. Thank you. Very interesting.
So good to hear! Your comment reminds me of going to an art museum with my dad when I was a kid. If I said I didn't really like a painting, he would analyze it and show me what was great about it, all the things I hadn't noticed but which added up to it being a masterpiece. Thanks so much for watching! And Merry Christmas to you and your family!!
Hello Catherine, I really appreciate your explanations here. Could I ask for help in understanding how to build a design? How to add variety, interesting features, etc? Whenever I try to create a design, it's always bland and boring. I understand these concepts, but have trouble applying them. Do you have any advice? Is it just a matter of learning and practicing more? Thank you!
That's a great topic for a video! But in the meantime, if your design looks boring to you, it means you have too much unity in all of the elements. Try to add variety in a texture, or a colour, add an interesting seam line, or maybe play with the proportions. It's all about asking, "What if...?" But you might find that your style is simply more minimal and classic, and you don't need to add anything to make your design beautiful. Some designers rely purely on beautiful fabrics, perfect fit, and elegant simplicity.
The way you teach is perfect.Do you mind if you create a content and carry on the lesson for beginners? -Types of fashion design -Cycles of Fashion -History of Fashion -Styles of fashion -Fashion market research -Mood boards,Design development and Sketching -Fabrics -------
