The PRISON Vegetable Garden

Years ago I heard rumors that the Isle of Man's prison had their own vegetable gardens. The fact that they swept up many of the awards at a local horticultural show was proof. After years of curiosity, I finally see first hand how fresh fruit and vegetables are grown within the grounds of Jurby Prison. I also find out that the initiative is so successful that they've stopped buying in fresh veg at the prison this summer.
This is probably the most unique garden tour I've ever been on and there are a few things to take from it. First of all, there is a real opportunity for prisons, especially smaller facilities, to become self-sufficient in fresh vegetables. While the prisoners are getting fresh air and given responsibility, the prison saves money. On top of that, the Isle of Man prison is hiring on a permanent horticultural officer to oversee the gardens and the vocational certificate they hope to offer to inmates. Have a watch and let me know what you think and if you've ever heard of a similar program.
In this video:
✽ Speaking to the Isle of Man prison's governor
✽ Garden tour of the prison's vegetable gardens
✽ Speaking to two prisoners about their experience in the prison gardens
✽ A look to see how homegrown veg is being used in the prison's kitchens and a chat with their head chef

I'm in Washington State here in the United States and our local Monroe Prison has also been involved for quite some years in agriculture and dairy farming. The act of hands-to-the- earth-growing, harvesting, preparing and eating good food is spiritual food for the soul. It's sacred. Bravo! Bravo! Bravo!

Absolutely excellent video. I only wish every prison could grow their own. So many pluses. I used to work with ex-offenders and they loved working outside in physical work because they said it kept them fit and they went to bed tired which kept them out of trouble, their words!

The prison governor expressed to me that the programme is all about rehabilitation, education, and resettlement plans that include a job and a home. 95% of offenders don't come back if they have those two things.

Thank you for sharing this video. Giving inmates new skills must surely impact on reduction to reoffending. Wish every prison adopted similar programs.

Outside work is good for all whether it may be mental illness, someone who has gone astray or got lost along the way. I find as an everyday person gardening is my therapy to deal with my outside world demons and stresses. It’s such a release. 💕⭐️ regards Maria

Great subject matter, adding to the already great content on your channel. It is a key part of a time capsule for the wider community on the Isle of Man and inspiring for us over here in Ireland. Well done.

A great Idea it cuts down recidivism rates and gives the prisoners something to do as well as look forward to. Our county jail does this and sells at the farmers market which I fully support on a weekly basis. Great Video!

Agree wholeheartedly. Without some sort of education or vocational training these guys might find themselves back behind bars. That's good for them and great for the rest of the community.

Thanks for sharing this great story. Great job on videography as well. We have a prison in our town that us on the grounds of a state. Entail health center that is very old. I worked at both the prison and mental health center and my husband still works for MH. In the beginning the mental health center was a dairy farm and had gardens as well. We have asked many times why are we not gardening on the prison grounds to feed the inmates and cut our state budget. There is a small amount of flower gardening going on but there is a fear of allowing tools and such as we house level 4/5 inmates. We have been in some dangerous situations with them but oh I wish we could garden safely

I can see where that could get hairy. As far as the IOM prison - some prisoners have to be supervised and some not.

What an inspiring story, the kind of story I watch until the end. Its unfortunate for someone to end up in prison but if you end up there and there is a place to learn something like this it may help you so much more when you get your release. As the officer said one guy got employed after his release to work in a restaurant. It gives them a sense of seeing that there is more to life and they can contribute in a good way. Thank you for this video.

Thanks for showing this. I have worked in several prisons, including female ones.the farms and gardens offer valuable work skills and prisoners always value their time there. Lots of prisons have been sold off for their land and smaller more intense units seem to be the norm, with little space for gardens, very short sighted in my view.

That was great! I do think that this is a program that should be implemented in all institutions to help people learn a skill that they can use once they are out to do something that they would never have thought of before. Thanks for the video. I do hope they put in more flowers in the garden though to bring in the pollinators. And, a little bit if beauty is good for the soul too.

Great video! That's an awesome program they have there. Too bad not every prison has it, but I guess based on the culture of the prisoners in the larger prison makes it tougher to do. I'm learning more and more of the Isle of Man.

This is what inmates should be doing, growing their own vegitables, train and raise service dogs, provide companionship at retirement homes and serving at the soup kitchen, not forced to do slave labor so the economy benefits of them. They're in prison to be reformed, not used as slaves damnit, and it's time we treat them as people again and not numbers in a system.

Thats quite a small prison, I wonder if all inmates are from the Isle as I thought it was a safe place!! Good to see though :-)
@Lovelygreens

All are from the Island but there are less than 100 inmates. I understand that a lot of them are in there for traffic violations but couldn’t give a statistic on that. As far as the Island being safe, every place on earth has troubled people.

Phil Naylor This isn’t rewarding prisoners, it’s protecting the community and saving taxpayers money. Every person in this prison will within a few months to under 20 years be back on the streets again. What type of person would you like to see in your community? One that’s on a path to a different future or someone who has a high chance of reoffending? As governor McColm says, giving prisoners a way to have a job and a home cuts reoffending down by 95%.

Yes i fully agree. I can understand what its trying to do and i hope it works. Still aint right tho they get given everything on a plate (House, training, job and money). While their victims suffer in silence with no support.
