No. 6 wanted to intervene because the Village would punish everyone if No. 2 were assassinated, as explained by the watchmaker's daughter. Of course, she didn't know that the Village authorities were behind the whole thing.

I do like how the Prisoner shows is more of Number 6 and his character and it is not always about escape.

There's something of a Doctor Who reunion with this episode, as Mark Eden, Derren Nesbitt and Martin Miller appeared together in the Marco Polo serial. Also, Annette Andre, who played the blonde woman, would later star in the cult 60s show Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased). This show itself was later rebooted and featured none other than Tom Baker in a supporting role. Both versions may well be of interest to you.

It's a flawed episode, but I have a soft spot for it because it's the one that got me into the series. 'The Prisoner' got a repeat showing in 1984, and while it was broadcast after my bedtime, a lenient child-sitter let me stay up to see most of the episode, and the inconveniently-timed return of my parents caused me to miss the climax. Skip to the end of the decade, when the series was released on VHS cassettes, and seeing the tapes in the shops jogged my memory and reminded me that I'd never seen how things worked out, so I bought the tape to get closure, and instead I got hooked.

I always love your Prisoner reactions, Marie-Clare. Every fan of The Prisoner has spent many an hour ( or in my case decades ) trying to work out the meaning of each episode, but we're all still at a loss. Suffice to say, our hero is either trying to escape from the village, or cause as much havoc as possible. :) And we also have to acknowledge that Patrick McGoohan was struggling with interference from the powers that be, to complete the episodes as he wanted and also to fulfil his commitments to other projects, including the Hollywood movie Ice Station Zebra.

Three members of the cast of this episode were all in Doctor Who: Marco Polo (from season one) - Number 2 played Tegana (Derren Nesbitt), Number 100 played Marco Polo (Mark Eden) and the watchmaker was Kublai Khan (Martin Miller).

A trouble Production indeed! McGoohan sacked Director, Robert Asher in humiliating circumstances early on and took over direction himself (Even though Asher still gets credit for Directing it) Annette Andre found `working` with McGoohan a terrible strain and almost quit, while Derren Nesbit too had artistic differences with McGoohan over his (Nesbitt`s) portrayal of No 2 for that episode. All this comes via the `Don`t Knock Yourself Out` Documentary on the Blue-Ray release. I state this in case @ghugsearch might think that I am making it up.

A lot of fans regard this as the weakest episode and IMO they're right. The writer Michael Cramoy was a writer on The Saint, a great show with Roger Moore,( one to react to perhaps?) This seems like a plot from that show that didn't get made. The Saint arrives in a Italian village and uncovers a plot to murder the mayor. It just doesn't fit The Prisoner. No. 6 is such a problem with Young 2's plot to kill old 2, ordered by no.1, that he is drawn into it so he would warn Young 2, which was recorded, then edited to fool old 2 that 6 was ill and shouldn't be listened to. If 6 was a problem, just knock him out for a couple of days, end of problem. The idea that all previous 2s were temporary while old 2 was on leave is unlikely too. Derren Nesbitt was great though and Wanda Ventham, Benedict Cumberbatch' s mother, was also in it, nice to see. She is a main player in UFO, another future reaction possibly?😊

I agree it's not the strongest but I think Derren Nesbitt saves it. In my opinion there's a far worse entry (one with a long title) yet to come which doesn't fit the tone of The Prisoner series at all (for the same reasons you mention). The good news for Marie Clare is that things pick up tremendously towards the latter end of the show with my own favourite episode yet to come!

@@chrisjackson5210 Derren had his `differences` with McGoohan in the production. McGoohan had just `humiliated` the Director and sacked him, causing Annette Andre to consider quitting the thing! Hence, not a harmonious episode in the making.

@@alansmith1989 Being such a rare example of so-called 'auteur tv' the show does lend itself to these kind of background discussions of the trials and tribulations behind its production. Clealy there are fans for whom this sort of thing enhances interest, but I prefer to simply enjoy what's seen on screen. I wasn't aware of the difficulties you mention but they make no difference to me in my enjoyment of the show. D Nesbitt's performance is still the most memorable aspect of the episode.

@alansmith1989 Месяц назад
@@chrisjackson5210 Yes- I like Derrens portrayal too. McGoohan had taken on so much work it was affecting his nerves and making him awkward to work with. Leo McKern and Ian Rakoff also both `suffered` via these `outbursts` from McGoohan as well.

This episode was a `filler` and McGoohan knew it was. As I stated before, in my comments on this series as watched by Marie - Clare; he envisioned a series of just Seven episodes originally. McGoohan and stated quite often over the years he just could not see how it could be stretched past Seven without `weakening` it. However, both CBS (In the United States) and ATV (Midlands region UK) were the ones putting up the Money and they (CBS in particular) needed more episodes to make the series `viable` from their commercial viewpoint. Hence you get some episodes comparatively weak- such as this. It often comes bottom or near bottom (Sharing that dubious distinction with the next but One episode to come) in Fan polls concerning `Prisoner` Episodes. I do hope that Marie-Clare can see why an episode such as this is not as strong- because given the choice McGoohan would have just had Seven `Good` episodes made as the full series.
@ghughesarch

Paddy only mentioned the "seven episodes" thing a decade after the series was made. It was bought as a seventeen episode series by CBS a couple of weeks after filming started, if not earlier.
@alansmith1989
@alansmith1989 Месяц назад
There was no way he wanted it to be longer than Seven, whatever date he mentioned it. He found it a struggle to go past seven, that is why an episode like `Its Your Funeral` now exists. The US network certainly did put pressure on to expand it- hence 17. The extra Ten have their moments. I, personally love the 14th and 15th episodes; which if Pat had his way, would not exist today; so I am actually glad he was `pressured` into making more than Seven.

@@ghughesarch I've heard conflicting accounts of how many eps were originally intended/commissioned (A channel 4 documentary says it was 13, for example - A standard number for UK TV in those days), but the one thing everyone agrees on is that the stretch to 17 was against McGoohan's wishes and led some frantic scrambling for extra scripts.
