A biggest inconsistency with the series is the fact that the aliens initial plan was to come share the world with humans, but they only begun to see humans as a threat after they learnt that humans could lie and they then decided to cripple science so they could stunt humans scientific advancements. So, why were they killing scientists at the start of the series?
It's never 100% clear if they're harming scientists or the scientists break their minds and kill themselves by end timer. Who knows because I'm not sure if the way the books are done versus the way the TV series is done based on the divergences is consistent or not. Also, these two writers are ecotistical narcissists. "I'm better than everyone and I'm showing it," type of writers. Doesn't make me have a lot of confidence. They don't know what they're doing.
they said it perfectly, they afraid when they arrive, human already outmatched them and see them as insignificant (we are proven to advance faster than they ever could), their goal is to co exist but as them to be the superior in our own home or maybe ehmmm coughing replace us kindly, but when they discover we have this thing called "lie" then they just drop the charade and goes all in to full invasions and annihilation of mankind
Because the scientists concluded there was no hope and offed themselves. This is explained in the books but maybe the series missed the mark. It’s also in the book they targeted scientists they deemed as a threat to them. The nano tech was a definite threat in the book.
When it comes to the ability of the aliens to disrupt science thats referring to almost exclusively their ability to effect the particle accelerators. It makes the readings in the accelerators random from the little proton computers smashing into stuff on the inside. But there are other fields of science that dont have anything to do with particle accelerators so there is still science that can be done. The aliens saying the sophons can be everywhere is a slight exaggeration. They move at the speed of light basically so be anywhere on the planet in an instant but there is still only 2 of them. So they can go anywhere they want but they aren't like omnipresent.
Its also probable that it wasnt just the efforts of the aliens directly. They did have a cult following their orders for like 60 years. Imagine all the backdoors and system infiltrations?
@@zeroneutral dont think so. The recording device in the interrogation room showed 'you are bugs' too. Surely, not every Monitor is connected to some kind of mediaserver. Maybe they hacked every device/momitor at light speed. Makes more sense to me
I think the show has to dumb down so many aspects from the book it become unrecognizable if they would have to explain something as obvious as that. The books aren't enjoyable to low intellect people and the show is trying to contend with that but will ultimately fail because people don't understand the concepts coming from the original story.
@@metaempiricist well yeah, but also the show doesn't focus as much on the theories or science fiction parts because they focus more on the characters where as the book doesn't as much
I agree to an extent. The book doesn't have the drama a mass audience wants. And a lot of people understand this stuff from the book but don't have the patience to deal with it as "entertainment"
16:12 *What you are missing is that Sophons, even in their complexity, are still a singular proton mass. Not a collection of cells, atoms, etc. “… it’s easy to accelerate a single proton to light speed…”*
You technically can't accelerate a proton to light speed, though. The most fundamental law of relativistic physics is that nothing with mass can travel at the speed of light.
@@Cbricklyne The SanTi simulation is just loosely speaking that it's the speed of light, in practical terms they boosted the Sophons to 99.99%c or some close approximation to c. If I had a proton moving at 99.99% I'd keep it simple and say that's c. I did a basic calculation, if the SanTi sent a Sophon and a photon to earth at the same instant and the Sophon is going 99.99%c, the photon arrives about 4 hours earlier at earth.
The Reason why the Sophons are able to reach earth so quickly but the Trisolaran ships could not is because of mass. a single Proton can be propelled to near light speed, space ships can't as they are simply too massive. they also do continue to manipulate the results of experiments. humanity starts to come up with ways of countering this by spreading out far enough that it effects their near light speed advantage. Also, the Sophons can indeed be anywhere almost instantly, but they can't be everywhere at the same time. this means if you build a laboratory far enough away "like on the moon" the Sophon would lose that instantaneous viewing advantage because it would have to travel that distance back and forth, losing the ability to view anything else in the process as they travel. The Sophons are not telepathic, and this is the point of the wallfacers project. they can view any digital information, any written document but they cant read minds. they can alter local physics to various degrees to cause effects like changing the results of experiments, manipulating data on technological devices and inducing hallucinations. they can't however, actively see whats going on in a human brain. so despite their power, their abilities have limits.
@@BrandonDenny-we1rw Between Trisolaris and Sol, it'll take the sophons traveling at the speed of light 4 years to reach the latter, its reasonable to assume that they sent the Sophons years before the present setting.
@@uaremysunshine-fk9zb It had to be that way because the sophons are how the trisolarans were communicating with humans at faster than light speed. They probably sent the sophons decades prior to the present time in the story.
Can the aliens "fold" away the mass of a planetary sized supercomputers into hidden dimensions though? So that it can have the mass similar to a proton therefore allowing near light speed travel a.k.a. the oh my god particle. The closest physical theories I am aware of are brane type ones that say gravity "leaks" into some subspace but I don't think mass has anything to do with those.
No, in the show and in the books, Sophon has only recently arrived on Earth for a few months. It took San-Ti planet a lot of time to create 4 Sophon. So if it's been on Earth for a few months then San-Ti must have sent the 2 sophons out around 2018-2019. @@zeroneutral
There's no 'wormholes' or magic teleporters in that whole story. The aliens and everyone else are constrained by light speed. So they are not literally everywhere.

There is a whole genre called "Scar Literature" in China which is about how cultural revolution affects people's lives, so it is not as restrictive as you think.
The main issue is they are not explaining the "rules" of the universe this takes place in. For example, as you note, why can they not just cause all humans to go insane and remove themselves from the equation? And, based on the information we are given, they are breaking the few rules we do get.
Most of the characters make me root for the aliens. The old intelligence guy, the cancer dude, Wong, and the snack guy are the only likable characters.

It was in every scene.
This species cannot lie - but they can created illusions and make you see anything they want to see and convince you that physics doesn't work. How is that not lying?
Its not that they can't lie, its that this species has a telepathic link with each other so they evolved without the ability to even try to lie to each other. They are bad at deception is a better way to put it.
@@Alteori Because they can't watch everyone at once. They only have 2 sophonts so they CAN be any 2 places at any 1 time but not everywhere. So they thought they would be able to watch a couple people and know what they were all generally thinking since they didn't know that we aren't a hive mind like them. That's also why they were messing with the scientists because the science for them is telepathically understood straight from the minds of the scientists and would fool their whole species. But our scientists hid their results from everyone and they couldn't possibly do that.
@mattmark94 the basic premise of the dark forest isn't that hard to understand, and really not all that improbable to be the case in our real world. Even disregarding all the super advanced speculative tech, the main premise is simple, possible, and terrifying.
'Anywhere & Everywhere!' is not entirely out of context...The two Sophons can exist both at 11 Dimension at subatomic size or at 2 Dimension at unfolded state large enough to cover the entire earth. Being able to move between dimensions also give them the ability to make itself visible or invisible... Plus they can travel at the speed of light... Which gives them the ability to smash through other protons during scientific tests and mess with the results or project numbers by etching on your retina... Technically being same size as proton, it can pass through your organs... One thing they can't do is read your mind or tell what you are thinking... The show covers all bases but the Book Trilogy explains it much deeper and better...
Another thing i noticed was when the aliens kept trying to kill the black scientist and somehow failed twice, so why didn't they just hack his plane and crash it?
@@UditYadav-rw9yclets be honest here: 1. the concept of the "supercomputer in a proton" is pretty absurd 2. even if it was, how would it know how to control anything? even though they know so little about our planet that they have never heard of lying, they are able to preprogram that computer to infiltrate and control every electronic device on the planet? 3. not only that, but it does not matter if it is controlled by an operating system that has an encrypted firmware, a pw protected operating sstem etc.? this is all so stupid. lets just call it what it is: a fantasy series, not a sci fi series. lord of the rings is much closer to reality in comparison.
I'm at ep. 5 and I kinda like it but it was a MASSIVE disappointment when the writers decided that the aliens had no idea what a lie was and that we could lie. Access to our entire knowledge didn't give them a hint, but the old man reading them Little Red Riding Hood did it. "We would like to speak to the wolf" oh come on
The "Problem" with NETFLIXs version is that once again Hollywood writers think they are better than the award winning novelists and they FUCK UP their stories to make changes that do not even need to be made. The novel and the Chinese show from 2 years ago do not have this problem.
The chinese show add removed parts of the book material in it. It also made more changes than the netflix show did from the books. The netflix show is way closer too the books than the chinese one is.
@@andrekallner7464 That is so false its almost funny. Even the Netflix show writers said they did not think the books story could be made for TV and that is why they made so many changes. Alteori, we can make a probe to leave the solarsystem in decades, but to place someone on it would take an order of magnitude more difficulty. The alians might be the same. It may not even be possible to place living things into a proton sided space.
Their society does not allow lying because their thoughts are immediately shared by people near them. It's like Deanno Troi's mother, who is a telepath. There's no way to lie in the San-Ti society so they didn't understand that lying is possible until they met humans.
Then why did the pacifist alien say we were lucky it was the first to see our message? How was it planning on keeping the rest of its non-pacifistic comrades in the dark?
@@roastpork5437 Then how did they create an Artificial Intelligence that seemed to do nothing in its interactions with humans other than lie or misrepresent itself from the get-go? Also, you'll have to explain how that squares with the fact that one of the San-ti's keys to existence in this "Dark Forest" universe is to successfully lie about their existence and their presence so that their presence is not known by more advanced species?
When sophon (the woman) said they're everywhere, she meant that the sophons (the proton size super computers) that can cover the earth, eye in the sky, etc. Can monitor any activity on the earth. Just like big brother analogy. And as they have already demonstrated, act and foil earth's plans (messing up earth's science) through the same sophons.
@@Alteori Yep. Because they're protons, they could travel at light speed and light speed could literally go around the Earth multiple times in under a second, so in essence; they can be anywhere all at once.
The reason they don't use a ship instead of the sophon is explained that small particles can easily be accelerated to near light speed, as even we do it. However, lightspeed is slow af, and just to cross the solar system would take something like half an hour.
There were only two narrative flaws as far as I could tell. Everything else made sense to me within the bounds of the story being told. 1st was the ep5 ship attack. The point of the wires was that it would be too fast for anyone to figure out what was going on and doing something to the drive. The old guy being able to figure it out and get to the drive just to have him ineffectually run around with it was done for pure drama. It was stupid and it undercut the whole point of the attack, and additionally insulted my intelligence. The moment he got to that room he should have hit a big red button that side "wipe drive". The reason for the wires was specifically to prevent that from being possible. 2nd was Augie boohooing about the whole thing. Those aliens are coming to exterminate us. That ship is full of traitors TO ALL MANKIND and their indoctrinated children. I get that it sucks, but what the fuck?
"We are everywhere and anywhere" refers to the fact that the sophons can go anywhere unrestricted. It's explained in the book that because they travel at light speed, they can appear to be in multiple places at once, because the time it takes to cross the earth is less than a fraction of a second. Thats why they were able to disrupt multiple acceleators and other scientific sites at the same time in the book, even though they only have 2. But they need to know the targets and monitor them continuously, so that's why they can't monitor all plans st all the time. Later in the books more sophoms arrive and so there truly is no safe space from them until far further along in the booksankind eventually develops a "clean room" that utilizes a charge to repel the sophons from being able to enter the barriers.
I dont get who the pacifist is. If the alien has a hive mind and everything is known instantly. Wouldn't it be a lie of omition not telling the rest of them they made contact?
They're not exactly a hivemind. The aliens can think individually to a degree, but due to their biology whatever they think is openly displayed to the rest of their species visually, like having a screen on your forehead displaying all your thoughts. The pacifist could've just been alone in a research station at the moment and it'd have been enough for the others to not immediately know.
@leo20101993 literally refers to as a hive mind by Mike Evens in episode 4 "Our Lord". This is why they don't understand the concept of lying because everything is known instantly by all. This means all share experiences, thoughts, and feelings. There couldn't be an indervidual/pacifist.
I've said it before, I'll say it again (for all viewers, not just Alteori, who's maybe seen me mention it before); if you've got an itch for sci-fi, look up the animated series Pantheon. It's really smartly done, good characters, asks interesting questions (both in-show mystery, and big-picture existential questions), and balances weird and trippy with grounded and human. I've seen nobody talk about it, and it deserves a lot more love than it gets.
Interestingly, Ken Liu, the creator of Pantheon, translated the English version of the novel "The Three-Body Problem", and he also serves as a consultant for the Netflix adaptation of "The Three-Body Problem".
One huge issue I have with this show and book, mind you I love both of them, is those 4 gigantic computers could've calculated the suns movements and covered the planet in a protective layer when needed.
You might forget that they can't do shit about the planet anymore. Yeah they could terraform Trisolaris and protect it from the harmful radiation from the three suns but in the end, its going to be swallowed by one of the suns either way; im pretty sure terraforming is not going to save the planet. Not to mention, the gigantic computers are fragile if they're in an 'unfolded' state, fragile enough to be decimated by conventional weaponry.
Their planet is beyond saving even with terraforming because the planet is destined to literally be swallowed by one of the three suns. I'm pretty sure no amount of layers or terraforming can save a planet from that.
The problem is that someone wrote something that wanted to be super smart and complex and then it became to complex for himself and therfore not as smart anymore. And this starts with the premise. The 3 Body problem in physics might be complex for our abilities to solve but not for the abilities of the aliens if they really are so intelligent. But even more simple. A planet that has 3 Suns or at least 1 Sun and 2 Jupiters to deaal with has no chance to become more than a hellhole without any life or even a Civilzation. How will it go further if already the premise makes no sense.
The Trisolarans are not that intelligent. But still, they solved the Three Body Problem long ago. They know that their world is close to total destruction, because now they can predict its movement. That's the exact reason why they desperately search for a new world to settle on and it might even be the sole reason why they engage in communication with a different species in the Dark Forest (having the Hiding Gene is a selection criteria for any civilization). Your comment, up to this point, is completely wrong. Regarding their homeworld: yes, it's implausible. Alpha Centauri is not build like that. That would be another fantasy aspect of that scenario. Why does that invalidate the scenario? The entire point of the story is that humanity doesn't know anything about the universe. Fantastical aspects about space are justified by the story itself. For example, their planet is indeed a hellhole. That's the reason why the Trisolarans are fundamentally different from us. And it is the reason why they took so long to develop their culture and technology, compared to us. The planet itself still could have enough diverse elements and vulcanic activity to create life. How would we know that it is impossible? They might not even be carbon-based (they are definitely based, but maybe not on carbon).
exactly, in the book they already know the solution, there’s no solution. all the other planets in their system have been swallowed by the 3 suns, and they know they are next. they have to leave now or never, because who knows when they will be able to get to this tech level again.
@@craigcj5953It is my understanding that Euler’s three body problem version is about 1 particle being affected by two other fixed bodies. The paper says it does not apply to a planet moving in the gravitational field of 2 stars. and it also doesn’t apply to the crazier scenario of the book/show where is 1 planet and 3 stars.
the problem has no solution. well, it does, but you need to know the properties of all the bodies (speed, direction vector) to do the calculations. the problem is that you can’t know those properties exactly unless you were there at the beginning of the system, (the beginning of the universe?). Our scientist and computers can solve it for very specific configurations, not a real general solution. In the book they arrive to your same conclusion, which is that’s a hellhole, they need to leave, their planet will be swallowed/destroyed by the 3 stars like all the other 10 planets in that system before them.
A random bit of trivia from the novels is that the universe used to exist in a (IIRC) 11-dimensional state instead of jist a 3-dimensional one, but every so often a civilization becomes advanced enough to discover dimensional manipulation weaponry and enough use of it collapses the current dimension into the lower one. This process is constantly happening, which means that the universe is in the process of very slowly transitioning into a 2-dimensional state, and will one day only exist in a single one.
@@steelenutz1 not only that but the history of the dimensional collapse is proportional to our own understanding of the big bang theory, time has been dilating and it's a whole different concept as time goes on, the 10 dimensions were just less than a microsecond after the big bang but as it was the born time of the universe it was infinitesimal times longer from the perspective at that point in time, even the 11 dimension in the precise moment of the big bang it was infinite, pretty cool concept.
Even though I'm a massive sci-fi fan. This show is not for me, i had the feeling there was a lot of drama in the show. That's my problem, it's a drama and drama bores me to death.
Similar deal with me. I don’t like media that’s continuous drama, that leads to an unsatisfying end, that’s not even a satisfying bittersweet. I don’t have a problem with other people liking ( existential nihilistic cosmic drama ) or whatever you call this type of thing, but it’s a big waste of time for me, there should be a disclaimer for this sort of thing. It’s a similar reason why I don’t like X-Men because it never gets a satisfying story for the mutants. Sidenote: It’s actually not unbelievable to think humans will have surpassed the aliens in technology, if you just look at how exponential technology has come in just 20 years, and that’s without the new current AI technology. I actually like this detail in the show and don’t find it ridiculous.

The Chinese Cultural Revolution scene is an authentic depiction of the events in the first novel Three Body Problem. I recommend reading Cixin Liu's books in order to have some context to the Netflix TV series. If you want a more faithful adaptation, there is a Tencent series but it is 30 episodes long.
If you're interested in getting more info for The Three-Body Problem and it's sequel books, I would recommend the RU-vid channel Quinn's Ideas, he was my first introduction to the books years ago.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the show, but the way they explained quantum entanglement in the Sophon scene was basically just how many people 'think' quantum entanglement works, but it's wrong. It doesn't enable faster-than-light communication. When you have two entangled particles, all you can do is read the quantum state of both particles by just the measurement of one. However, you can't magically change the state of a particle across half the universe. If you change the spin of an entangled particle, the spin of the other one doesn't change. Basically, it would be like having two balls, not knowing their colour, just knowing that it's the same for both balls. Now, let's say you decide to send one of the balls across a long distance and then paint the other ball blue. Does that change the colour of the first ball? No. All we know is the balls are now different colours.
I think it's fair to say there's a lot of pseudoscience, which I am wholly fine with. However, if they do the bare minimum in explaining their own pseudoscience or are inconsistent in execution, that's where it gets wishy-washy.
@@Alteori Yeah, most of the science was at least somewhat grounded in reality, and there were for sure some inconsistencies, I just felt like this one was interesting to spread the knowledge about, given how often movies try to explain whatever pseudoscience bull by adding the 'quantum' adverb.

Wade and Jack are the best characters in the entire show. Auggie is insufferable, Saul is a throwaway until the last two episodes, Jen is fine until she starts regurgitating Auggies foolishness.
Books are even more amazing, hard Sci Fi at it's best... It goes much deeper into describing the elements of the plot scientifically and philosophically... Show covers all the bases but still is done very superficially!! Trust me when i say ' You know nothing, Jon Snow' 😝, Season 2 will go much wilder and even more mind boggling 🤯🤯
I think for your question about travel, the same can be said for us because if we can speak to each other over the internet through the use of satellites, radio waves and microwaves, why aren't we able to use them to make ourselves travel faster - I think the theory of relativity is strong in this show and even if the aliens figured out a way to mess with science, they are still not above the laws of physics
The alien didn't want to disrupt the cryogenic plans because they actually want to meet Will's brain! The Alien even said it herself on the plane. It's going to benefit them to know what human actually is and also benefit us since we have one of us who meets them. Wow you need to watch the more carefully next time. I don't think the writings are stupid, its not great but its done well enough to not make me confused like other people. If one of us can understand, all of us can understand. Just rewatch.
Minor issues I have with it: 1) They say they only got "scared" of humans after they learned we could lie - but they sent the Sophons to fuck with us many years before they learned that. 2) We're told that they are all a singular being, telepathically connected - "if one of us survives, we all survive". But then why was there a "single" Shanti for communicating the first message with the warning? If they all share thought, surely they would all have instantly known, the second the message was read by someone. Those are really the only major "plot holes" that frustrate me, I can generally deal with the rest.
The first one i could probably answer. They wanted too slow down the technological advancement of the human race because they were still going too concure the planet. And having a less technological race against you on a single planet is betyer than having a superior enemy on several. So they wanted too stop humanity from fighting back when they got there. They were never going to be nice to us. Srry for the bad english and all that.
The chinese version is way better in my opinion the pacing and the character they make way more sense. netflix shouldn't have rush the plot, It's feel like everything go way too fast and not the leave the room to breath at all.
Also, if the aliens were mad about the lying thing...they changed the physics to trick the humans way before the guy was like "oh we lie" (that part does get explained later but it's still dumb)
The sophons could move at almost the speed of light and through any matter, so in that sense they could be anywhere at (almost) any point in time, but they do still have limitations, however small those might be. It takes something like 3 seconds to go to the moon when moving at light speed, to illustrate. There are only 2 sophons, and if there are a whole array of targets they're meant to observe or sabotage, it could be possible to make them miss a few marks
The main question I have is why, with their advanced technology (sophons & interstellar travel), the San-Ti didn't search for a stable planet they could populate, but waited to be invited by an existing civilization. Perhaps it will be explained later.
and it’s my understanding that after dying so many times in their 3 body system, this is the first time they have been able to get to this level of technology. They have to act on the tech they have now or else they might not have another chance.
I know it's cringe but I wanna date that guy in Karaoka bar, he was polite, seem enjoyable to having fun with, he even asked if she's OK after they were trashy on him. The big problam about this series is The Alien who said they're everywhere, know everything. But they only know that human can lies from the cult's bedtime story and they stop to protect them after they promised to protect them... That's a huge lies they made to the cult followers and got them killed, and everyone even the world leaders think that they can't lie? Anyway, I think it's better than books because the main character is not "too" genius (kinda more stupid actually), unlike in the book and make it diversity is more suit to Doomsday film when in the book is almost all for Chinese readers.
The Netflix series ditched all the mystery in lieu of a bunch of annoying 30 somethings having chats lots of chats. Felt like a sitcom without the laugh track.

5:32 I'll just turn off the TV right there because it's too forced stereotype and intentional. Don't get me wrong, I love strong and smart female characters WHEN IT'S DONE RIGHT and not She-Hulk BS.
@@joshuacr i mean she regretted it and protested about doing so, regretted it so bad that she turned into like, the most hated character in the series.
how does an astrophysicist that aims the huge antenna at the Sun not know that the light from the sun takes 10 min to reach us and the position of the Sun that we see is delayed by 10 min?
@15:00 - It's a proton, UNFOLDED into a much larger thing, and COMPRESSED into the mass and size of a proton. So it has nearly zero mass and can be accelerated much more rapidly than something with the mass of an entire ship. I wouldn't imagine it would be very comfortable being COMPRESSED into something the size and mass of a proton, if you were to arrive on such a vessel. Your human body already contains 10 ^ 28 more mass than a single proton. Meaning it would require at least that much more energy and time to send JUST your body through space at that speed. And a ship is likely thousands or millions of times more massive than that.
The problem is they say the aliens can't lie but demonstrate that they do time and time again. So either they can lie and they're lying about it, and all these super smart people can't figure it out. OR, the show just wants you to ignore the inconsistencies and stop thinking to hard. I feel like the dan benioff and db wiess couldn't write themselves out of a paper bag if their careers depended upon it.
They're a hivemind. They evolved without the ability to lie to each other because they are connected mentally. They are not connected mentally to us. They can lie to us but aren't very good at it.
That's why they have ETO. The humans that work with them do the strategies that involve lying and require an understanding of human psyche. That's the entire point of the Wallbreaker program that is hinted in one of the last scenes in the first season. And yes, Trisolarans can lie as well. They just are not experienced, because it is impossible for them to do in person. When exchanging text messages or talking, they are able to lie, but their lies are primitive. Their brains (or the equivalent organs) are not adapted to that, but on a tryhard level, they can perform simple perception.
The sophons disrupt particle accelerators, which halts progress in physics and computing tech (which are the two fields that humans will need to develop technology that can beat the San-Ti). They can’t prevent humans from further developing existing technology or creating new tech that doesn’t involve quantum computing
Haha they have a wall of mugshots of scientists starting with strong smart female ones then to my surprise two males but thankfully one of them had 'Oxford Dropout' written next to him so balance is restored to the woke universe... SERIOUSLY?
You should cover the Chinese version of the three body problem, that show is 22 hours long and it didn't smash some parts of book 2 and 3 into the show
I've given up trying to convince a majority of the Western audience to try the Tencent version. I've just accepted that most people in the West no longer have the attention span to watch 30 episode shows.
@@zeroneutral In the year that the Tencent version has been out, I've never heard a single person complain about the language. Not a single one. That's not even a exaggeration. People nowadays are used to watching foreign shows with subtitles. The thing that they complain about with regard to the Tencent show is the length. They are always complaining about the length, and how it's too long, even longer than the audio version. You must not hang around places (channels, Reddit, etc) that regularly talk about 3 Body (books, Tencent and Netflix) in general if you think it's the language barrier people complain about.
@@Scion141the goldfish memory is far and wide common, thanks to the short format video clips, people have the attention span of 20 seconds. Maybe if the show was released 30 years ago the long format show would thrive along with Babylon 5 or Star Trek TNG. These shows would die in the vine if done today, at least that is my take on why Hollywood refuses to make long format TV shows.
Answers to all the questions in the video containing spoilers: Q: If the Santi are so advanced, why don't they have FTL to reach earth instantly? -to enable the epic scale of the plot that spans 400+ years -in the series' universe FTL is rather uncommon, because the more malevolent civilizations out there can detect FTL users, and wipe them out without mercy. The Santi are actually on the cusp of inveting FTL, and it will come into play eventually. Q: If the sophons are so OP, why don't they wipe out humanity right now? -the Santi are NOT evil/malevolent. They are actually the 'angles' in Ye's story about Einstein. The war with Santi stems from their imperative to survive, not from genocidal urges. From humanity's perspective, we prefer independence since we can't know whether Santi rule will be positive or negative. Nevertheless, genocide is on the table for Santi as part of utilitarian calculations, which are not resolved in the current day timeline. Q: If the sophons can be everywhere and anywhere and mess with everyone, how can humanity improve any technologies at all? -Simply, almost anything humans do is irrelevant, and Santi only need to stifle a couple of very specific technologies/discoveries that can counter them: 1. Manipulation of dimensions: needed to make super dense matter used in Santi 'droplet' ships, which are impervious to anything that isn't equally or more dense. 2. Dark forest theory, which is the main plot of next season, centered around the Einstein joke 3. Light speed technologies, which is a plotline in season 3-4: to prevent humans from striking their home planet; to escape and become a threat later on; to turn the solar system into a 'dark system' by lowering speed of light (a last ditch measure, Santi would prefer not to implement); to draw any further attention to Earth from other civilizations (if Earth doesn't remain undetected, it is useless to Santi) Q: why Santi don't know that humans can lie? -sophons only arrived mere months ago and they are learning and adjusting their strategy as they go Q: if Santi can't lie, how can they decieve humans? -inability to lie is a LIE. They can't lie in their telepathic communication with eachother. It simply doesn't follow that they can't lie using their sophon AI Q: if the Santi can come to Earth, why don't they just live on their ships or artificial habitats somewhere closer to their home system? -Santi are thinking LONG term, and they dream of a paradise just like Earth. The paradise dream is central to their society. Solar system and Santi system are actually VERY close on the cosmic scale, basicly right next to eachother. Living on ships or habitats is not great since it conflicts with one of life's imperatives (according to the series) to constantly expand. The fleet on the way is packed to the brim with dehydrated Santi, and they prefer to actually LIVE, rather than drift in space in hibernation indefinetly.
It’s become a terribly overused cliché that obnoxious characters go to a bar, usually a karaoke bar, and then are irritated that people are there having fun while they sit there and be boring. How about don’t go to a bar if you don’t want bar stuff
Why don't the atoms of the molecules cut away by the nanowires simply reassemble after the wire passes by them? If the cut is that fine then wouldn't the atomic bonds reassemble instantly?
ALTERORI and those who are watching this video.. please go and immediately start reading the first book THREE BODY PROBLEM.. i know i am asking for a lot of your time and patience but the show literally skipped and altered many scenes.. they dumbed many things down.. you would be mind blown by the first book. I finished the book in a week and cant get it out of my head. easily the best modern sci-fi book
it's a redundant statement "Everywhere. Anywhere" to the point I think it's a correction they make to clarify, not to emphasize. Sure they're weirdly flexing throughout this speech but it's more inline with the Santi way of thinking. Because Clearly they can't actually be everywhere all at once, so they correct to say they can be anywhere. But yeah, I dont blame you for being upset with not understanding whats going on because it wasnt explained properly. I know it's a lot but do yourself the favor and watch the Chinese Three Body Problem series. It's long but things are better explained and honestly Ye Wenjie is WAY better in that series. to the point that despite the fact I hated her for doing what she did I came to understand her better. Respected her way more than the Netflix one, still hated and not really respect but you get what I mean. It was a really nice show.
"Imagine if one day up is down and down is up" I mean we are living that reality now men is women and women is men and 2 + 2 = 5 at least that's what some people are trying to claim😂
15:00, to many solutions with that level of tech: 🚫🧠 A) They can teleport themselves by those entanglement, atom by atom like they communicate (No need to space ships) B) They can terraform another planet anywhere else (They do not need earth) C) They can create another planet with just a surface or a ecosystem on top of the AI/PC/Atom D) They can fold their civilization into another dimension to protect themselves from the problems of their own planet (pop in/out every time) E) They can fold 2 of the suns in the original system, keeping only 1 sun (along with their planet), even use those 2 folded suns as power sources. The 3 body problem is based on 3 bodies, not 4 (3 suns + 1 planet), that is even more complex, still... the idea is that all of those bodies have some type of stable orbits (not crush at some point)
Folding civ into another dimension is something they can't do. That is only for the more advanced alien races in the series that can do that. Folding a sun is way more diffuclt than doing with a proton they aren't able to do that.
A) No? Most sci fi incarnations of quantum entanglement applies to information-exchange. You literally can't use quantum entanglement to make yourself faster-than-light, even real-life science doesn't agree to that statement as well. B) That'll be spoilers for the next books. C) No? The atoms are highly fragile as stated by the books. You only need books to destroy the Sophons in an 'unfolded state' D) Impossible. The other replier has already explained. E) Again, refer to the other replier. 3 + 1 yes, the three body problem is still the 3 stars, its just how a 4th party revolves around that problem.
Referencing entanglement (even if as badly as science fiction normally does) compactified dimensions, and the three body problem might at least get a few more people interested in science. So to that extent, yay anyway.
@@mattmark94 cool, did you read all three books (Three Body Problem, The Dark Forest & Deaths End) or just Three body problem? how did they suck? would love to hear your thoughts.
@@rebllll overall, it's not an easy read, not only from the "science" (which is questionable, and some even pseudoscience), but the other tedious details that honestly, pretty useless and not pushing the story forward. events and actions that seem too fit to be coincidences, not that big of a deal for me. but the ending (book 3), um, no thanks. now the theme of book 2, if you know the dark forest thingy, at first reading it was awesome. but when you think and rethink it again and again, maybe not.
@@outerlast so, these things make the books suck? (original comment said the books suck, which you responded for). I'm not going to say they are perfect and spotless. Yeah, its a hard read being translated from Chinese. of course, the science/pseudoscience is questionable, its sci-fi. I do think they are ambitious books with some of the largest scopes in sci-fi novels. Why is the dark forest theory "not awesome" to you anymore?
@@rebllll have no idea about the other comment, but awesome or suck may depend more on personal feeling about it. for example, the generally praised dune series, i think a couple of book are good (not awesome), and the rest are kind of suck. and not sure if it's mainly because of bad translation for this one. back then, i asked around and some chinese speakers did say the original version was also not good, like being written by amateur writers. the dark forest theory, at least in the book, is essentially about staying hidden and keeping quiet to increase the chance of survival. pretty much the reverse of star trek where humans joined galactic community after they reached certain technological point. ie pessimistic vs optimistic. it was interesting enough when they made it into a deterrence policy. but in facing cosmic horrors with crazy weapons like the one that turns star system from 3d into 2d, staying hidden is just like waiting to be slaughtered.
I didn't have any faith in the Netflix series but I was surprised that I enjoyed it overall. I've read the books. Episode 5 with the ship getting nanowired was crazy. Some good foreshadowing for what's to come later. Thomas Wade is awesome.
i couldnt believe they actually went through with the nano wire SLICING everything/ everyone in the the show!!! i thought for sure theyd either not do it, or not show it as DETALIED as they did!!!! was pretty wild
how did you manage to not die of boredom in the last episodes? it's nothing but incredibly slow, convoluted drama. everybody behaving in most irrational way possible.
Alteori you know what would be cool You should bring back that vs series you used to do an put up the "3 body proble" aliens vs the white spikes or the death angels or the aliens from arrival, they can bend time, same for the mimics from edge of tomorrow them mf can rewind time
