The Problem With Borderlands 4 

If you didnt like Borderlands 3 or Wonderlands you might as well just put away hope right now because that's what you're going to get with Borderlands 4.

I don’t care if it’s in the same engine at all. I want a good storyline, dedicated drops(not 20 from one guy, just one or two), and replay ability.

The biggest problem is that Ava was left in charge of the Crimson Raiders. The most hated character in the series is now the pivotal character.

You don't need a new engine to reduce visual detail and visual effects clutter. I'll admit a new engine might prompt new tools and new assets, but new game direction and art direction would go a lot further.

I really struggle to understand the hate that BL3 gets. I’ve been with the franchise since BL1 and played every release and spin off. I found BL3 to be a lot of fun. Wasn’t perfect but was a very good game I sunk 300 hours into

Man, the BL3 and Wonderlands graphics and effects were just God awful, thay can be best summarized by this Dunkey quote: "There is so much shit on your screen in this game, I don't even know where to begin. What am I supposed to be shooting? Where are the enemies? Is that a bad guy or a lens flare. There's like 50 sources of light and enemies just blend right into the environment, its just a cluttered overload."

I honestly don’t think I’ll jump in to borderlands 4 until after a year of it being out and that’s if it’s worth playing in the end. After borderlands 3 and wonderlands I’m currently wishing I could build a Time Machine and go tell my 17 year old self to stop at the pre sequel. I might’ve been one to say it was bad compared to borderlands 1 and 2, but it at least filled in the filler gap between the two. Borderlands 3 I question where typhon deleon even came from and so far there’s absolutely nothing that bridges that gap. It’s been proven that gearbox can in fact make a good game and fix any story gaps if needed, they just need to go back and refocus on what put them on the map.

Not buying BL4 on release date would be the way to go

I also hope they don't bring back the vault cards ever again. I don't like the idea of opening loot boxes. The only slightly good thing about it was the diamond keys because you could get dlc gear early on. Even so it's annoying having to get so many diamond keys and not get the weapon you want.

I hope they put everysingle writer from borderlands 3 on another project. Everyone would be happier if bl3 was just retconned completely.

I liked Borderlands 3 but I really hope they don't bring back anointments. They were the dumbest shit ever. If they do please set the price for rerolling at only 50 eridium. 250 was way too much.

the problem with the particle effect and all the other effects is that we cant turn them off. If we could just tune around our experience, I wouldn't mind but there is so much happening on the screen that you can just hope you are hitting something or you can just play looking at the mini map

Such a sad series to see go downhill. Borderlands 2 was untouchable, Pre-Sequel was a pretty good game once the Claptrap DLC came out and the story wasn't murdered yet, Tales from the Borderlands had great writing and did justice to returning characters and the world, and Commander Lilith DLC was the cherry on top right before Borderlands 3. Everything just kinda slowly fell apart once Borderlands 3 actually dropped.

I understand that people are worried. And the RU-vid channel needs content. But the hysteria surrounding the release of a game, that hasn't even been announced yet. It's pretty paranoid, Gearbox could stop working with that attitude, right away.

As unlikely as it may be, they could tone down the detail of the art style, add a bloom slider as well as an option to tune down visual effects and make some lighting changes.. even if it is on UE4 we could still get a better looking game. That, obviously, wont happen though. Most likely thing to happen is that it'll look and play exactly like bl3 and wonderlands with perhaps 1 or 2 new movement mechanics. The upside to this is that A: Like you said, they're already familiar with this engine and can get more work done with it, and B: Since they don't have to spend pre-prod and beyond making new art and central gameplay systems, they'll have more time to add endgame content and things that add to the overall replayability. Cause as we've said to each other before, the first playthrough in Wonderlands was great but it lacked any amount of replayability especially after you hit endgame. If Bl4 can not hurt my eyes as much, have drops at launch, have a decent sized endgame, a good story that doesn't make you wait for dialogue constantly and be a replayable game.. then it'll be more then satisfied. Not likely but fuck i can dream right

I farmed Boll for almost 3 years before learning he didn't drop he fast ball. Plus side....I had the version w the evil smasher glitch. I know that's irrelevant but I've said my mind....where tf is the original individual writers and developers that started Borderlands... Get THOSE people back.

Agree with everything you said. There would be one key advantage to using the same engine. Instead of developing a new engine, they could use the time to implement those 5 things you recommended. I would have the war the watcher talked about happen. Having multiple companies fighting you and themselves at the same time. More than 4 vault hunters playable. Custom ai vault hunters that you have as team. 3 or 4 vault hunter play throughes with new types of w3apons and items being accessed I'm each play through. New monsters in each play through. And a story that launches us into another saga in the borderlands universe. Gears could make this the greatest game.....if they make the community part of it, and take their egos and pride away.

I have played most of the games. I personally don't with UE4 because Borderlands 3 isn't the only game built on it. The things I want most from BL4 are: 1. A working game at launch 2. Dedicated loot farming with 1-25% droprate depending on difficulty of sorce 3. Bye bye Ava, hello Tina or Gaige

I was kinda hoping bl4 would be better than 3 but the fact that tales 2 is canon and they're not even going to give us new gun models (like every numbered entry before it) just drops my hopes even lower

My biggest issue with bl3 is the crappy story and the fact that it’s so damn easy to beat. Even the so called raid bosses are easy, the hardest part is getting to them sometimes. In bl2 it was challenging and actually felt like a raid boss, combine that with a good story and dedicated drops and that makes it a great game! Bl2 is my favorite of all the games and I hope gearbox makes bl4 like that and not let it be trash.

The problem with BL3 (IMO) was the story, not the tech. BL4 needs 1- A good story (like BL2) 2-A terrific ending (like BL2) 3-Great Sidequests (like BL2) 3-Worthwhile DLC's (like BL2) I liked the gameplay in BL3, but yes the particle effects or whatever needs to be toned down. Tiny Tina was weird in BL3. Snipers are pretty much terrible in BL3, the game doesn't allow you to snipe like in BL2 Wonderlands was good for one playthrough, but I did like that little overmap. Wonderlands Chaos Chambers and DLC's - terrible. Wonderlands weapon naming and spell naming was extremely confusing. At least in the BL series I could min/max stuff pretty easy. Really what made BL2 great was Handsome Jack, the DLC's, the sidequests and the endgame. Plus the gameplay mechanics are terrific in BL2

We just need to get comfortable with the fact that BL2 was probably as good as its gonna get for BL lol.

The game being in EU4 dosent mean it will look the exact same they can (Hopefully not holding my hopes up) tune VFX and the overly detailed models down. Game will feel very similar though. With all their recent releaes being absolute slag waste, im not expecting the gripes the community have to change. Them taking the Epic games money aswell as having a movie tells more that they're cashing in on whats left.

So as long as they have a game with the story quality of two and the game play and graphics of 3, 4 would be a solid game. The company needs to get back to basics delivering what fans originally wanted with 3 to build trust again. Going all out and trying to one up themselves when they don't know what they are doing won't be good for anyone. A new engine and shinier graphics doesn't make a good game. Borderlands 3 showed us that.

The new vault hunters should have separate storylines that play alongside each other, so each one is relevant and important to the story. And maybe you can freely jump between them in-game like GTA5, with certain major plot points you have to catch up with everyone at before moving on. Or maybe jumping between characters after big, important boss fights. It would be like getting 4 games in one and would give every supporting character a chance to really shine and be impactful to the story. That would be a great way to explore the idea of an on-going war within the Borderlands universe. Also, it would be such a treat to see the other vaulthunters fighting alongside you, separate from their storyline, when playing multiplayer.

I'm not buying BL4 until the current writers are fired. I enjoyed BL3 from a gameplay perspective but the writing made me physically ill. I had to take a break anytime the Calypsos or Ava opened their mouth.

I rather not have a borderlands 4 at all. If it’s following the trend of society then it should never release. 2020 was the start or influencers so ofc the villains has to be that. Now it’s 2024 we’re on the verge of ww3 everyone hates eachother you have endless possibles to create the most iconic villain since handsome jack and realistically it will be something stupid, a moronic dictator or do something with a character as bland as the twins or even go to something no one and I mean no one will ask for and that’s gonna be our villains. I have little faith in it

As a bl2 Stan myself This one ain’t it hellfire just cause it’s being built on the same engine doesn’t mean it will be the same game. There’s more than a hundred games that have been built on unreal engine 4 none are like bl3 or ttw at all. I don’t trust gearbox at all but that doesn’t mean they are going to be similar

I'm sorry to be *that* guy, Hellfire, but TPS did have dedicated drops. It's the enemies themselves the drops were tied to that didn't respawn (for whatever reason) but at least it had the workaround of the grinder to get the gear.

*Gearbox has the same problem a lot of other companies in the entertainment industry are having; previously having more covert subliminal messaging and now having too overt messaging* *Worse is like the other companies they keep hiring absolute smooth brains to tell stories and these people can't make skydiving seem interesting*

So... which engine should borderlands in general should be made in?

What makes Borderlands the best is how the weapons and gameplay evolve from game to game. When you have games like Wonderlands or the Presequel it just feels too stale. If BL4 uses pretty much anything from BL3 it will be a flop.

I honestly don't care that it is being built on the same platform. Almost every developer reuses assets. Lopk at Elden Ring for assets reused well. What bothers me is that that will likely stay stagnant and not innovate where it really needs to.

Yeah I never liked the bl3 graphics.. just too overdone and it feels like I’ve seen it countless times before. They should have made it bl2 cell shade will updated physics and slightly more realism.

Your right, borderlands 3 was a shit tank for stroy and the best wepons from bl2 were thrown in the dumpster, and wonderlands had no end gane content, but don't get me started on new tales from the borderlands, it had a por story, annoying vault hunters and it was nothing more then a rip off of tales from the borderlands

I hate all the kids who say 'oh, revamp bl2 and bl1, so they're like bl3' because all that sorta shit is pushing gearbox to do that and that's what us real fans don't want.

Bl3 was ok but they were never able to fix the stuff that broke, every week they fix this and then something else broke ‘made it seem like they didn’t know what they were doing, they need to spend another 2 years getting the game right before they release it.

Honestly i don’t care that it’s on the same engine as long as they where to listen to feedback from the fans from the past games like no modifiers no anoints new rarity’s and raid bosses at launch with more end game content with each DLC. SADLY gearbox has shown with there last 4 games that they don’t really care about what the fans want and with the story from the last tales game I doubt BL4 will be anything amazing. My bet is it’s going to be rushed out garbage with no thought into it at all with an awesome $90+ price tag and additional cost for 2 days early access. May as well go full money grab right?

Here's what I hope they do. #1) Bring back the writing team that made Borderlands 2, Minus Anthony Burch, it was great, Handsome Jack was a fantastic villain, you had colorful side characters like Moxxi, Zed, even Tiny Tina was a half decent character as a whole and I'm glad she got some closure with the Dragon Keep DLC ending. #2) If for some god awful reason they do make this game a live service, do it in the vain of Helldivers 2, that's a amazing game and well it turns out the devs aren't complete jerks too, with tons of community support and such. Whatever they do they better not make it in vain of Suicide Squad, Kill the Justice League because that game was a buggy as hell mess, it flopped and it's support is pretty much trash. #3) Delay it by a year and a half, that way they can create brand new weapons, enemies and hell even a few side characters for the game, please for the love of all things DON'T rush it Gearbox, we don't need another Wonderlands/Borderlands 3 Fiasco on our hands here.

Heres what I like about Borderlands 3. 1. The graphics looks great in my opinion, more of the comic detail instead of trying to be super realistic 2. The side quests I think are better compared to Borderlands 2 sort of, feeling like more a chore in Borderlands 2 than in Borderlands 3. 3. The driving in Borderlands 3 is a huge improvement compared to Borderlands 2. 4. I like the customization of our own vault hunters in Borderlands 3. 5. I like the adventure feeling too the game, getting to explore new areas and seeing huge sci-fi landscape and cities, but also the adventure tone. And that’s about it really. What I don’t like about Borderlands 3, 1. The main villains are repetitive, annoying, and unlike able, I hate Tyreen and Troy. 2. I hate Ava, she is annoying, she has no reason to be in Borderlands 3, and always steals the show that “We the Vault Hunters” did or accomplish. 3. The Borderlands 3 story isn’t entirely bad, I like the adventureness, but everything else is just bad. 4. I hate Tannis, she’s becoming more annoying instead of likeable in Borderlands 3. 5. I hate Lilith because she’s annoying, and ultimately does nothing around the entire goddam Game with no depth or anything in Borderlands 3. 6. Borderlands 3 doesn’t even have anything related or an answer to the questions such as what happened at the ending of Tales of the Borderlands. 7. Some of the bosses don’t feel memorable at all in Borderlands 3. 8. Borderlands 3 is not funny at all, or really has anything funny or comical unlike Borderlands 1 & Borderlands 2. 9. Some of the guns really suck as well recently, and nothing so fun or powerful feeling at all anymore sort of. And here’s what I want Borderlands 4 to have and be. 1. This is more of a wishlist but I wish the main vault hunters are Krieg Lorelei Tina Brick But I’m afraid that they are gonna make Ava one of the playable vault hunters in Borderlands 4 which is scary to think about. 2. The other vault hunters to you don’t pick in Borderlands 4 should be npcs that you can do quests for, or travel along with you maybe. 3. I want Borderlands 4 to keep the adventureness and adventure feeling to it. 4. I want Borderlands 4 to be the conclusion to the mainly arch’s around the Borderlands Universe like Bringing Lilith, Maya, and Roland back into from the Dead, the Krieg and Maya love arch story complete, Lilith and Roland’s Love arch story complete, reuniting Roland with Tina, Moxxi finding her soulmate finally. And a conclusion to the main Borderlands characters. I think after Borderlands 4, I’m not sure if they should continue with a Borderlands 5 taking place at least 40 to 50 years after Borderlands 4 with new characters and a new story. Or a reboot which is a meh kind of decision.

Back in the day, I never finished BL2 and I fell of the BL wagon. Up until a few weeks ago, I didn't even know BL3 existed lol. I recently bought the Pandora's box collection and I'm excited to play them all and see how it has evolved. It's sad that we can't look forward to new games/movies/shows etc dude to the stuff you stated in the ENTIRE video. I'm enjoying your videos, kept up the good work!

Borderlands4 should go back to Borderlands gun play, borderlands 2 villian (handsome jacks like ability), borderlands TPS unique feature, and Borderlands 3 map exploration (you should be able to explore the map more)

Welp, for every new borderlands game gearbox puts together with spit and sewer grease, is another mod for me to install for BL2.

I know that borderlands 3 was an unfinished game at launch, I preordered it and I played, or at least tried to, on xbox one. Yes the game was pretty bad at launch and in the first year of the game, but honestly right now borderlands 3 is a good game. If someone asked me if they should play bl3 I’d say 100%. But as much as I love bl3 I can’t even imagine bl4 having the same guns and gameplay as bl3, yes it was fun but damn the visual effects are just waaaaaaaaay too much, endgame Is fine but it lacks content. If bl4 was a mixture of everything right in the previous titles it would be amazing, but at this point borderlands games are being made to please randy and not the fans

I'm the kind of player that has put a combined 6k hrs into the series, mostly the first 2 games, but still didn't buy TPS at launch because I didn't trust it to be good after such a quick turnaround from BL2. I will never understand the kind of player that has barely put 150 hrs into the series across now 5 games and will preorder BL4 and defend that the series has never been better. Maybe they enjoy it so much because all they expect to get out of it is a playthrough and then leave us long-term players to deal with the glaring flaws and shortcomings for the next half-decade while they play 30 other games waiting on the next release for them to shell out money for?

At this point, I'm not forming any kind of opinion. I don't have anything to go off of, other than the engine. I'll wait until we actually see stuff about it. A trailer, some weapons, the vault hunters. I want to see if the weapons and enemies will just be reskins, or if they make new ones (which I would certainly expect from them at a bare minimum.) I want to be excited for this game, but they're going to have to make me feel excited. Like... I want to see a vault hunter and think "ooh, they're gonna be so fun!" Or see a gun and think "what even is that, it looks so cool!" Or whatever. I'm not counting it out right away, but I'm not counting it in right away either.

I like your honesty. You don't sugarcoat any of your opinions. I hope Borderlands 4 will be great. I am cautiously optimistic that it will be.

Borderlands was so m7sh more enjoyable when it retained a degree of grittiness in the story, BL3 and Wonderlands were both trying way too to be funny....and failed totally. Agree that the gameplay in both latest editions also feels like a gr8nd in too many instances, please 🙏 Gearbox (or whoever ends up calling the shots), don't rush to align with the movie, listen to feedback from the community, and take sufficient time to get it right!

Borderlands 2 was released in 2012. A majority of games around that time had smaller more passionate development teams. Back when I had my 360 I didn't have to worry about checking game reviews. I knew that the game would be at the very least decent. Today it's similar but different at the same time. We still have amazing games like Elden Ring, but its harder to come across. Most of the well known studios today are just way too big. too many people with too many ideas and concepts. Add in greedy management to the list and you have a recipe for disaster. Games used to be made to sell a quality product to the consumer to make their money. Now it seems that games are made to extract as much money as they can get away with from the consumer. Until the industry shifts back to what it was in 2012, I don't think Borderlands fans are going to get what they are looking for. I think we should appreciate that we got the chance to experience Borderlands 2. I would love for Gearbox to prove me wrong though.

BL2 and TPS came out two years apart, so I'm fine with the engine/guns/assets/graphics being reused. However, it's already been almost FIVE years since BL3 came out, and we can assume it'll be closer to six years by the time Borderlands 4 releases. There is NO reason we should still be on Unreal Engine 4 dude...

I don't mind the same engine but FTLOG plese bring some new mechanics. Yes The presequel was basically a copy paste of 2 but Oz kits were AMAZING, yes being on the lookout for oxygen sucks but the long jump plus slam attack with elemental damage was amazing. Just bring them back remove the oxygen meter and call them jet packs and give them a cool down or something, or a fuel bar that replenishes over time that can be used for slide attacks and the longjump slam combo!

I love borderlands a lot, I even like the presequel and my only qualms with 3 is its terrible story, but I feel like if borderlands 4 comes out half baked it will be the final nail on the coffin and it will effectively kill the series

Looking forward to new Borderlands game unreal 4 or 5. I like the main story of BL3 with large interesting maps, fast travel from anywhere to travel locations and my vehicle, new vehicles, lots of guns, and the spaceship and multiple planets. What I didn't like was too many, mostly junk, weapons and shields dropped from enemies. Need more ammo dropped than junk gear. I was very disappointed that Tiny Tina was not a playable vault hunter. Hopefully BL4 takes what was cool from the previous games and surprises us with some cool new stuff.

Man i just want hybrids and cool pearls or even extremely rare but not annoying to farm guns, half the fun really and it def would help give endgame player have a reason to play other than trying for that 0.0000001% parts groll + annoit groll + getting the actuall correct weapon thats a pain to farm but dog water like 80% of b3 legendaries

My problem with borderlands 3 is the optimization. It’s atrocious. It’s amd sponsored or whatever yet they don’t have fsr? I can run cyberpunk at 4k buttery smooth without even using fsr and it’s very intensive. How could a borderlands game of all things be so bad to play or hard to optimize. Nothing I do will fix my issues. If it weren’t for that I’d love borderlands 3(excluding the main campaign of course.

With all that shit happening during the movie development and how pourly BL4 is going to be (judging from BL3 and WL ) , i am not giving them not a single penny from my wallet. Unfortunately i have became more sceptical than hyped. I will sit and wait for the support phase during the game's lifecycle to see GB's dedication on THEIR product , but myself supporting them. Why are you trying to guess what is gonna be in BL4? I mean sure they will use UE4 that is guaranteed at this time, but an engine is a Canvas, and there's much they can do to change things around. Then there's also the part where you mention the returning weapons, what's wrong with that? I'm sure there are gonna be new ones as well, BL3 had more new ones than returning ones, so whatever you're talking about...

I want BL1 atmosphere and big wastlands, BL2 story, humor, lore, main villain and diverse places (planets), Moon gravity and mechanics from the Presequel, BL3 endgame and gameplay, improved game mechanics (keep it simple), NO WOKE SH1T (no Sweet Baby Inc., no Randy Pitchford idiotism) but strong (male and female) characters, interesting new vault hunters, AND DELIVER THAT LONG PROMISSED BIG WAR ALREADY!!!

There are so many flaws with borderlands 3 but before i dive deep into it. Let’s talk about the movie. The very fact that they couldn’t be bothered to give the movie a good cast already tells us they don’t give a fuck about the story and only care about that quick cash grab. The only cast member i like and i think fits well is Ariana Greenblatt. She fit really well with Tiny Tina visually. The rest could use more work. Idk why most of the cast members are old and as much as i love kevin hart, HE DOES NOT FIT AS ROLAND. Roland isn’t some comic relief, he is a leader. I wouldn’t mind The Rock but personally i feel like Idris Elba works really well as Roland instead of Kevin. Now Borderlands 3, it has so many flaws story wise. I hated how the vault hunters are excluded from every cutscene in the game. I hate how Lilith was useless for 90% of the game because she “lost” her powers. She didn’t need to fight the twins and could very easily run away with the map cuz she can teleport but she didn’t. I hated with a passion for Ava. Not only is she annoying but her character has zero redeeming traits. Maya death was the most pathetic way any character could die ever. It’s not like the cutscene happens while we were inside the vault, it happened when we stepped out of the vault so what did the VH do while Maya got killed? For then Ava to blame lilith for maya death? like what the fuck is she on about? Tho i must say the mission i love the most in BL3 is Katagawa and saving Sir Hammerlock with the A team. Didn’t love the idea of Aurelia selling out like that considering she was a vault hunter in Pre-sequel so it’s weird for her to be that way. This is my nitpicking but i hated Amara siren powers among the siren we’ve played before. Her Phasegrasp feels like a washed and downgraded version of Maya Phaselock. Since Amara phasegrasp can’t lock onto vehicles and bosses like Maya can. I do like the idea of a brawler siren but her powers feels abit lackluster. Tho many people prefer to play the OG 4 VH, a lot of people still like having new vault hunters just like the previous game. I know i love it. It’s sad they didn’t want to put another 2 vault hunter but i understand where they coming from. Now the reason i type this out is because i do not want a Borderlands game where it’s like BL3 but worse. I want the best for borderlands 4 and i hope they can spend more time making it and not trying to rush it so that fans can watch the movie and play the game. I rather they take their time on it. Personally didn’t like the New tales of the Borderlands are canon but it does make for an interesting story. Hopefully they can make BL4 their best game since BL2
