it seems that i have spread some egg related misinformation in this video - eggs are refrigerated in america not due to freak chemicals but because they are washed and when washed the protective layer is dissolved, which is what protects against bacteria. thank you to folks in the audience who have pointed this out

@user-pc3io5ji1o

Well it is due to freaky chemicals that are used in the washing process. If you have fresh eggs from chicken you can wash them with normal water and leave them at room temp but in factories they use a chemical washing process that destroys the protective membrane.

Regarding the Scrub Daddy critique, she was doing all the cleanings and traveling on her own dime for a very long time. She loved to use Scrub Daddy stuff, and the company eventually noticed her and decided to sponsor her efforts. I do love her for this same reason. She is so kind and thoughtful and it is such a comfort to hear. I have been watching her for forever while cleaning things. And, thanks to her, I found checked out Scrub Daddy and found they have halloween shaped sponges, and now even my cleaning things make me happy to look at. Maybe that seems stupid, but sometimes having a Frankenstein's monster shaped sponge makes cleaning the bathroom a bit easier. I really love Aurikatariina. I know she is making money but you're right, she is doing objectively good, kind things. And it seems like she does lots of the actual cleaning work, sometimes with another person. And she always makes a point to explain why someone might be in that situation and she just has compassion. And I've decided that "trashes" is better than "trash".

idk if this resonates with what you're saying at the start but i feel like if i let cleaning things build up, it's because of my adhd brain and i think "ugh i'm so lazy like why can't i do this basic task" so then i feel like if other people see the mess they'll have the same thoughts about me and think "omg she's so laze/sloppy/messy/etc. etc." and just assume everyone will judge me how i judge myself (which isn't true!!)

Midwest Magic is a good channel to watch. I think the owner of the channel does a good job explaining how the houses end up in the condition they’re in. And a backstory to the people as well that isn’t judgemental. I highly recommend his channel.
@localkate
@localkate 4 месяца назад
Also in a recent video he mentioned he'd pieced together the home owner's story, but since she didn't tell him or give him permission to share, he wouldn't. Aurikatariina has a video where a client explicitly asked and begged for her not to open the fridge and she made a huge deal of cracking it open and showing everything inside with that overly-gushy happy character voice she puts on. It deeply bothered me. Midwest Magic is at least respectful and grounded in reality.

Midwest Magic Cleaning is my favorite, not just because he breaks down how the place he's cleaning got out of hand for the owner & always clarifies that hoarding is a disorder of the brain and not something that can be cured by "stopping to be lazy", but because he is on the autism spectrum, just like me. He frames tidying up and cleaning as sorting jigsaw pieces in preparation for putting a whole, good-looking, and satisfying picture together and that just really appeals to the wonky wires in my brain. His humor is also 10/10 A++ would allow him to spin-kick me into tomorrow.

Seasoning the wok is just heating a coating of clean neutral oil on the wok after cleaning it. It prevents the surface from rusting and corroding away, and makes food come off more easily when cooked. It’s not really a wok thing; it’s for any carbon steel or cast iron pots and pans.

the more hoarder type cleaning videos are my favourite because they make me feel like "if she can do that, I can definitely do this." I also appreciate that she doesn't show the owner's reaction to the cleaning. that feels exploitative. but she does it from a place of compassion. she tells their story and how their home came to be out of their control-sometimes it's depression, or a death in the family, or a loss of a job, but sometimes it's normal people you would never guess. and they're just trapped in this huge secret they can't tell anyone. it gives us a glimpse into their world without exploiting their struggles.

I think the difference between Mr Beast and the cleaning videos is that while both are doing good things for people, one is putting a bandaid on capitalism and the other is just being nice. Even in a communist utopia there would be depressed people who need more help cleaning their spaces, but people wouldn't not have access to medical procedures due to financial stuff
@Nassifeh
@Nassifeh 4 месяца назад
It also seems like Mr. Beast is like... making an amount of money where he could do way, way more good than he's actually doing? For someone who makes hundreds of millions of dollars a year to pay for one (1) surgery is like, the most underwhelming, and he's not doing the actual work. Saying that people who clean houses for the disabled should be able to make a living is a very different take from saying that someone who just pays for a surgery should earn a profit on doing so.

You can store the eggs outside the refridgerator because of a cuticle which is a protective coating on the outside. In the US we wash this off when we sanitize them. If you buy eggs from a farmers market make sure you asked if they were washed or not, if unwashed you can leave them out. So it doesn’t have anything to do with chemicals so much as our industrial processing.

I used to get super down when my apartment was messy because I watched aesthetic Korean cleaning videos - they set such a high standard!! This whole video just reminded me of another video I saw regarding back pain, so I will pass the message along: if your back hurts while standing for long periods, especially your lower to mid-back, use a wide stance! A very wide stance. Shoulder-width or even wider. This makes you shorter and takes a lot of pressure off your back. If you are already short, like me, just do a wider stance than normal as long as it is still comfortable.

Any advice on what to do if it's specifically upper back/neck pain?
@samf8405
@samf8405 5 месяцев назад
@llawliet72 That is my biggest issue too. Unfortunately, I think the biggest help there will be strengthening exercises. BUT, if you have the means, there are some protective garments that might help. For example, you can look up a neck brace for cervical instability. They usually look kinda foam-like, but they help limit the range of motion in your neck (so you're not looking down so much and putting excess pressure on your neck). You could also get shoulder straps/an upper back brace. These will help pull your shoulders back. Both would help make you more aware of your movements and help keep you from injuring yourself. If you did go the support route, it would still be important to strengthen those muscles as well because lack of strength and stability is often what leads to pain in the first place. One other thing I would recommend is to just support and accommodate yourself however you can while you're working. I often end up leaning over with my elbows/forearms resting on the edge of the sink as I clean. I also tend to dance in place (with music) and also take short stretch breaks to attend to cramping/sore muscles. Good luck! The upper back and neck pain is no joke, I hope something in here was helpful 🤞🏻 Edit: typo

Honestly the ultra dirty cleaning are the most relatable because that could've been me, with a house like that. And although I'm not in my rock bottom depression days anymore, there's still so much to heal. Why is it so hard to take the trash out? Is it because I have a nagging feeling that something was wrongly put in the trash bag and I feel an urge to go through it piece by piece? It's okay, I'll take the trash out. Later. Right now it can just stay... Here. Out of the way, but here, so that I have piece of mind. So that when something goes missing, I can go through it. (I did find the car keys there once) I remember on my worst days to feel ashamed of taking the trash out. It was something that I had to have no witnesses for. For context, I moved cities and the rules for the trash collection were different and I couldn't shake the feeling that I was doing something wrong. And everyone would see just how much trash I was accumulating, hiding. So I may be much better now. But it's so comforting to see a house that could have been mine being swept clean with kind words and compassion. It's like receiving a warm hug. It's also a push of motivation. I wish I had those videos back then. I'm glad I have them now. And I'm also glad for being able to afford quality therapy. And a dishwasher. My dishwasher changed my relationship with my kitchen mess. It's a magic wand.

I think a big part of what makes this content work well is it feels almost "personal". There are a lot of "productions" on the internet. And as someone who would say youtube is my "cable tv". It almost feels like someone is always trying to produce this super streamlined product (Which can be great). But sometimes when you are doing your chores you just want to turn something on thats chill and not too serious but still engaging. And I think the talks you have in these videos are largely relatable and listening while doing chores can be nice, because you know you dont HAVE to look at it. And the conversations being had, or still of value and not just mindless slop.

Pro tip for those dishes - clean the sink on the right first, then plug it tight. Add as many dishes as you can fit, including silverware. Swirl on some dish detergent and fill that sink with really hot water. Next wash the other empty sink. Now walk away for a half hour/45 minutes and just let the water do the work. When you come back most of the dishes can be just rinsed and then drained, and the few that need some scrubbing won’t need much. I use the soaking time to get some other chores done. It makes doing the dishes so much easier!

I grew up in a house that was in constant disarray. I wouldn’t call it hoarding because it wasn’t how much stuff we had that was the issue (though we did have more than what was comfortable), it was a lack of consistency in any kind of cleaning routine. I don’t want to get deep into the why or how bad it was, but essentially it wasn’t common for us to have clean dishes in the cabinets and trying to do anything was extremely stressful and time consuming. I moved out in 2020 and even though I keep my space MUCH cleaner and neater, I still feel a lot of shame and stress if there are dishes in the sink or a mess on my desk. For the longest time I’d avoid cleaning because I felt so much shame about how bad the problem had gotten until I really couldn’t take it anymore and I’d do it all in on a random afternoon. I’m still in the process of relearning how to maintain an orderly space at 28 and I try not to kick myself for that. I say all that just to say I appreciate people like aurikateriina because she normalizes very messy and dirty spaces as just another aspect of the human condition rather than making it out to be a moral failing. She humanizes the people she’s helping by respecting their reasons for how they got where they are and not making the task a negative experience. I spent many a day watching her videos to hype myself up to do my own routine cleaning, especially when I’m feeling depressed and my mess has gotten overwhelming. Her methods thought me to be kind with myself no matter how clean or messy my space has gotten and she’s one of the few who’ve helped me feel less shame around cleaning.

Thanks for this Noah!!!! I have problems cleaning after getting super sick a few years back. I LOVE setting up a phone date with my mom or a friend to keep me company when I clean. It’s one of the only things that works for me. Another thing is to time chunk, set a 12 minute timer and see how much I can do on that time. A third thing that helps is to start a stopwatch and aim for 45 mins of picking up as exercise to get in steps but not as a goal to clean one room. Somehow when I free myself from having to make a room perfect I can clean better. LASTLY novelty always helps. Classic executive function hack. I can organize my basement or weed a garden bed easier than doing the dishes because it’s different and I don’t have history of feeling bad about it. And it’s finite. Dishes and laundry happen all the time and feels futile

I think a better way to think about the 'hoarder' clean out is not so much 'they are benefiting off of people in need' but more of they are 'crowd sourcing the cost of cleaning' because as you mentioned that service would cost a small fortune to the person in need. There's a yardwork guy who does a similar service, 1 day of his work week he checks the clerks office for people getting warnings etc... for overrun yards and goes and cleans them up and uses the money from the video to pay the fee.

I just finished cleaning my home office/game room. It took about 2 weeks of chipping away and organizing it. The finished product is amazing, I freed up so much floor space and also organized my closet so I can access things without having to take everything out of the closet. Was it necessary? Not really. But as I'm getting the energy to put in the effort to get my room exactly the way I want AND maintain that organization, it's worth it. Of course if someone looks at my room they see the final product, I didn't really document the true mess and clutter. It just looks like something out of a magazine which can be intimidating for people. How do you know where to start if you only see the end goal?

In regards to whether anyone finds this interesting - I am loving these updates from you. It's been really nice to put these on as I go and try to leave the depression pit myself. Literally got inspired to do my dishes finally watching you, and had a little spark of joy as I realized I wanna try the brush system so I don't feel overwhelmed. I'm trying to navigate loss of my own, and getting these reminders that I can do little things to make my mental health better and that I deserve to be living in a tidy space is helping me a lot. Thanks for being so open about these things!

Since you asked for feedback I thought to point out that the breaks you take during your talk to go over the sensation/feeling of detail cleaning (both doing and noticing how things get left behind) are so satisfying to listen to, but also just resonate with me a lot because when I wash the dishes I do it thoroughly and scrub and swipe (and repeat) over the surface until it feels smooth and ungreased. I also try to emphasize the importance of doing that to the people in my life but they still try to do the dishes as fast as possible and wonder why there’s still dried food on everything. It doesn’t drive me crazy because I’ll just do it myself while they’re out or asleep since it gives them all anxiety that they do anything poorly (and I like cleaning) but it was nice to hear someone actually gets that. Your talks feel like hanging out with someone and it’s nice even if you feel a bit self conscious about it. 👍☺️

Thank you so much for verbalizing your thoughts on why/ the 'pleasure' we get out of binge eating. It's a difficult thing to stop and equally difficult to process, but the words you provided perfectly describe it. It's just a drug, but with flavor. A horrible coping mechanism, like so many others, and the post-binge clarity and depression are certainly real.

I comment this every time, but these videos have been the most effective body doubling stuff I've ever tried. I've heard of body doubling streams and stuff, but they seemed like a long investment and I am always too talkative in streams to focus on work while watching them. Feel free to shift focus if you lose interest in this, but it's been very helpful so far. thank you! I was doing squats with you yesterday while I cooked breakfast and thought it didn't do much until I woke up this morning (I had to stop early because I'm sick and I'm struggling to get enough air rip) I enjoy the pleasant soreness of a good workout and I find it rewarding. I know a running thing in this series has been people criticizing your dishwashing techniques. I want to clarify that I'm not criticizing you, just taking the time to talk about how I do dishes since it's a regular topic of discussion lol. I don't usually run the water until the rinse step, since I hate the dunking method. For the washing, I fill a bowl with water and soap to make basically concentrated dishwater without the gross parts. I use it to dip my sponge or splash some into the pans i'm washing. By the end, I usually end up using most of it. I wouldn't say it's the least wasteful method, but I feel it's a good middle ground that avoids the gross parts of dishwater and the dangerous parts of a full sink (submerged knives).

ADHD person who's been medicated for 4 months now here. Everything you ramble about is so incredibly relatable, i love just listening to you while i do stuff. Re cleaning channels: I love midwest magic cleaning because he's neurodivergent himself (so is his wife, probably his kids too?) and he's very transparent about why he does things, and puts context on the families he's helping. Auriikatarina is cool too, but sometimes I feel like she's not transparent enough and doesn't communicate well, where mental health comes into play. She seems more happy go lucky and doesn't judge, which is okay too, but I feel that her wide audience could benefit from some education and learned compassion. Maybe it's a language barrier also, who knows!

I have ADHD also and here are my tips for ADHD and productivity- 1) What works for one person with ADHD may not work for another, and there's so much shame involved in not being able to get started or remember to do basic tasks, it's very unhelpful to add additional shame because someone else's ADHD tips or life hacks don't work for you. Throw out and ignore any advice if you can't get it to work for you personally. 2) Productivity Stuff that works may stop working at any time. This is very frustrating but for ADHDers, pretty normal. Let that trick be fallow for awhile and it may work again later. This is also why it is good to have layered strategies in case something stops working for awhile. 3) If I am not able to get myself going, I see if I can change something in my immediate environment to see if that helps. Am I physically uncomfortable in any way? Do I need water? Do I need to go to the bathroom? Or tie my hair back because it's annoying me etc. I also use a playlist I made on Spotify that I named Move It because it's filled with songs that help me keep moving. If you have songs like that- make a playlist when you aren't stuck so there are less steps to get to the music when you are. 4) Something is better than nothing. Doing some of a task is better than neglecting or hiding from it. Can't open all the bills? Open one bill. And then give yourself a lil treat like a sticker or a lil candy or whatever gives you a little smile because even if you didn't do all of it- doing some of it is still REALLY GOOD. 5) Simplify any task you find you get stuck on to the absolute least amount of steps and pre-plan to make sure you have everything you need to do it right next to where it needs to be done. If I have to walk to another room to get an envelope to pay bills, I am more likely to wander off and forget the bills than if the envelopes live next to the mail. 6) There are no Adult Rules about how to do most things as long as they are done to a reasonable amount of competence. It doesn't matter if they way you do things or when you do them seems weird or not like how other people do them. YOU have to do the thing so as long as you do- that's all that matters. 7) You know those little annoying admin tasks that stack up because even tho they're small, they're really boring and hard to make yourself do? If I'm having a lil grumpy day and nothing is helping the grump, I try to do a couple of those little things. Because I'm already annoyed, so I might as well knock out something that annoys me. ❤

Conserving soap trick I use is to squirt a bit with water into a bowl by the side of the sink, then use the soapy water as I clean with my sponge and only the really greasy stuff gets direct soap. It uses less erry time! By the time I'm done I'll clean the soap bowl and sink with whatever left. Have a good one!

I always talk to my therapist about the need to "speed run" things. If there is something in the way of what I want to do, I'll do it in the quickest way possible, which includes simple things like not even putting on coats or gloves, letting things fall where I put them, not taking things out of the car. Like looking up the wok thing, it's so easy, simple, quick, but it's not on the "speed run" path. I try to force my brain to slow down sometimes.

I love watching/listening to cleaning videos. The extreme hoarder cases shown in Midwest Magic Cleaning are more common than people think/want to admit in the US. Personally, my place is no where near as bad as a Midwest Magic client, but it’s a bit cluttered and I sometimes need motivation to get started or need a nudge to get over the overwhelmed feeling that makes me freeze before I get started. Seeing or listening to a non-judgmental person start and tackle a larger challenge while listening to tips and jokes at the same time makes a less-than-pleasant but necessary task a little more pleasant.

I love channels like Midwest Magic and Auri because they don't judge the people they are helping, share their stories, and explain how a person can end up in a situation like the one they are in but explain it with compassion. I have big love for Auri especially because I've been following her a lot longer and she's shared some of her own personal struggles with mental health in the past and why she likes to help people.

This is my first time watching you. I subscribed and am looking forward to seeing what else you have to say. I will add to your commentary on cleaning content. I have trouble with mental health affecting my ability to clean and watching videos of hoards getting cleaned is more than satisfying to me- it gives me hope and motivation to not let my house get like that. I grew up in a hoarding home and as a child I had no ability or power to fix it. As an adult I have to constantly remind myself that I can do it and it isn't hopeless. Maybe that helps you see where different people are coming from.
