We've noticed a problem that nobody is talking about, and it has to do with those doggone mountain bike RU-vidrs! 🙄
That's us! 🙋‍♀️🙋‍♂️🚵‍♀️🚵‍♂️
This video was inspired by the real experiences we've had as MTB RU-vidrs filming videos about specific trail systems!
We think this message will help our fellow RU-vidrs as well as the MTB community as a whole.

Hey Nick, I watched your post because the title intrigued me and I did have something to say about what I find is the problem with a lot of MTB RU-vidrs. However, you addressed a very different set of issues which maybe more serious than the one gripe that I have. My gripe is that so many MTB RU-vidrs are lazy and/or have not realized how much more interesting their channel would be if they took the time to set the camera down and show side view perspective of themselves riding that awesome trail or clearing that difficult jump or descending that rock garden. Instead they just attach the camera onto their helmet and go have fun, leaving us with the very limited POV perspective. Nothing against POV, it is just that it is not enough. I like a channel like Nate Hills (Followcamfriday) where he is following someone or filming the person right behind him as he is blazing through the trail. Lately he has even employed the use of a drone that follows him along-- now that is wonderful for viewers.

We agree! Getting more than just a POV really allows the viewer to gauge the terrain more accurately. When we started our channel, we didn’t have GoPros so everything was filmed with our phones. It was a lot more work but it actually made the videos better since everything was filmed in 3rd person. POV is important as well so eventually we got GoPros, but we always made sure to stop and get 3rd person videos as well. This could be a good topic for another video! Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching! 🤙

Good thing my videos are 90% slowmo of a stationary bike in a dimly lit room.

Didn’t realize that was such a popular niche!

This is definitely something that is occurring in Michaux state forest right now. Many of those trails are actually un-sanctioned and with the increase in popularity of that area lately, people are continuing to build additional un-sanctioned trails. DCNR has actually been having meetings and making plans to shut down a lot of the mountain biking there because the new trails are causing a lot of erosion issues.

That’s a bummer to hear. It’s a perfect example of what I’m talking about. There isn’t much info on the trails so it’s hard to know if they are sanctioned or unsanctioned. It’s easy to see how this issue can arise but it’s a complex issue to solve. Hoping I can make more people aware of this. Thanks for your comment and thanks for watching!

Where I get bent out of shape is when people start talking about “ethics” and talking about public trails like they own them. I get it, if you’re a local and suddenly a lot of new people start crowding your trails, it’s frustrating. But they were never “your” trails. And if they’re underfunded, that’s a rectifiable problem with the local government, not an ethical violation by a RU-vidr. If it’s private land, then yeah, the owner can do whatever they want. But there’s nothing unethical about using public land the way it was intended to be used.

I appreciate your additional thoughts on this! I agree. Trying to keep something like public trails private is thinking in a scarcity mindset. Thanks for your comment and thanks for watching!

I think by 'ethics' they mean maybe donate time or money if you're coming out. A lot of parks are free and maintaining them isn't, so I guess the 'ethical' thing to do is give something.I think it's fair for volunteers and daily users to feel that the trail is 'theirs' cause usually they're the primary riders and builders.

The issue is a lot of people don't treat the trails well. They ride in ways that destroy the trails, leave garbage, etc.

@@evobe donating time or money is always a good thing. Especially if it’s somewhere you ride all the time! It’s great that people take pride and responsibility in the trails they take care. It’s definitely a balance though, no one should act like they own them. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching! 🤙

That’s something that bothers me too. The assumption that everyone who can ride can also be a professional trail builder. You put a shovel in my hand and I’ll ruin a trail unintentionally. I can barely boil water. But also the same assumptions aren’t made about the ethics of using a park’s sand volleyball courts or playgrounds or anything else. I’m happy to pay every time I ride somewhere if there’s a charge. But if it’s just “feel free to donate on our website” it’ll never happen…but maybe that’s just me. I don’t donate to anything because I don’t feel like I have extra money. And if the rules allow me to ride for free, then I’m doing that. Maybe there’s a law preventing public parks and rec departments from charging fees to use public spaces?

I live in Reading right on Mt Penn so I ride Mt Penn and Blue Marsh a lot…BAMBA does a great job of maintaining the current trails and building new ones.
