Ronnie Coleman blew out some disk in his lower back squat over 800lbs for 2 reps. The actual squat is on RU-vid. What actually destroyed his back was him refusing to give himself adequate time to recover from surgery. 10 surgeries on any part of your body is beyond excessive, and he had over 13. He let his ego override common sense

You know what? I find it amazing that people still act like no one knows that bodybuilders are on steroids. Bodybuilders, especially Olympia level bodybuilders, are very honest about their steroid use they just spend a lot of time talking about it. It's not a big deal to them. Bodybuilders use steroids. For them, they are competing on a level playing field, but if you're not bodybuilder , from the outside looking in their cheating.

And the side effects of supraphysiological levels of muscle building hormones are that the muscles develop past the ability of the soft connective tissue (ligaments, tendons) to accommodate the massive load which the muscles can do. This is why ballistic weight training works so well. The traction (pulling apart) from doing swinging patterns strengthens all of our joint stack.

Purely training for maximal strength is antithetical to training for longevity. I suppose it's about understanding strength adaptation comes from it's response to stress and muscle damage stimulus. It really is about taking a few steps back and being honest about whether or not we are strategic about pursuing short term gains or training over a lifetime. Holistic, total kinetic chain strengthening movements are my personal targets to aim towards. The aesthetics come tertiary to longevity and pain free human movement patterns. Squat, hinge, press and pull. These are the patterns I want to perform well for the rest of my very brief life on this rock.

Later 40s here, spent the last few years getting back into decent shape with kettlebells. I exclusively do 24kg S&S with added 16kg curls and uneven farmer's carry of each bell for a total of 50min 3x/week. Worked up to 3 sets of 11 on the curls but trying to add one more rep I crunched one last one out and injured the L bicep. Now it still isn't healed despite happening over a month ago. Had to cut out curls entirely. Not that big a deal since they were just for the mirror and ego, but anyway I'm bummed b/c I could have avoided the issue by just being a little more sensible. For me, at this age, exercise longevity and consistency is paramount, not reaching new personal maxs. That said, my goal this year is to move up to 32kg and probably stop there as a final weight. I already blow through the basic S&S workout with one-handed swings in 25min, so I feel ready for the 32kg. Thanks for your videos; you're one of the best out there for KBs. I've learned a lot of little tips that improved my form.

I just got two Kettlebell Kings adjustable kettle bells. With all of the internal cast iron plates, 32 kg. When I picked the badly bruised boxes (but, thankfully, unharmed kettlebells inside ensconced in styrofoam) my first thought was: “What kind of monster swings 32 kg. Kettlebells?” My second thought was: “My FedEx delivery person hates my guts.” I’ve removed ALL of the plates from BOTH. Steel shell is 12.5 kg. That’s plenty for me. Now, if I can get by the fear of crashing my knees, I’ll be fine. Two handed swings and static clean and jerks so far. It’s pretty hard to find dedicated kettlebell/steel club/ steel mace bell classes and training in the real world.

Great breakdown on this video yet again. Lot of great points here. First time I watched this interview was over 2 years ago. It was probably towards the end of 2019 early 2020. Of all the JRE episodes he's done, this is the one I've seen more than twice and its entirety. He made me discover who Pavel is and it gave me a better admiration to kettlebells. To the point that I've added them in my routine more than before. As I come from more of a bodybuilding background myself, it was great to hear him name drop some very notable n legendary names as Franco. Respect 🤜 This was not an interview with Joe - it was a lecture. And we were all students . Well spoken man all around.

You have clearly never read pavels return of the kettlebell. He gives nothing but praise to kettlebell sport for making russian boys into better men through kb sport. His methods may be different but they are very effective. He clearly has done a lot of research into effective training. Are their plenty of good training methods sure but pick one and get good at whatever you want.😊

Gregory - thanks for the video. I suggest you check out a video about Ronnie Coleman's injuries by RU-vid channel "Dr Chris Raynor - not your everyday ortho" it's a fantastic breakdown of Coleman's injuries by a surgeon. 😎

Pretty sure Coach Gregory would recommend the world's greatest stretch if you're short on time. Both Gregory & Squat University have solid tutorials on it here on RU-vid.

Don't do it if you experience pain and have a therapist check it out. Otherwise, do back squats do build stronger hips. - Gregory

Yup, I felt a stripe of pain diagonally across my right patella doing those. I stopped with the pistol squats. More of a question of lateral stability. My knees feel the same way about pistol squats and jumping jack burpees. My knees are pissed off about it and keep reminding me later.
