I agree but I also think that the seeming disadvantage of a prime lens is also one of the greatest things about it. When you’re forced to only have one focal length you’re forced to come up with creative solutions to get the shot you want. Another benefit is that you’re actually forced to move which can result in shots that you wouldn’t have got otherwise.

i think that's the wrongest thing people think about primes... i'm not forced to come up with creative solutions... i'm hindered from achieving a shot... nobody cares about shallow depth of field or fast apertures... 2.8 is more than fast enough for low light... a 24-70 and 70-200 gives me the option to play with compression... if you miss a shot because you didn't move you need to start moving... a prime won't fix that
@NeonMako
@NeonMako Год назад
@@LoFiAxolotl there are a lot of cameras and even situations where f2.8 isn't enough to get a shot. Granted this isn't the case for the average guy witha camera, but there is very much a reason some people need, and there are companies making f1.2, and even lower lenses out there. Also, a ton of people DO care about DoF and aperture even outside that. Photography is a creative art, and not every shot you take should be pin sharp. Facts are that primes and zooms and even wacky filters all have their places.

Actually if you want to do social documentary photography, using a prime lens can get your skills really high Not only you'll be way better at composition, you also get to learn how to communicate with people better because of the fact that you can't zoom in and you're forced to get closer to people
@TFTSTHS
@TFTSTHS Год назад
This shouldn’t be considered a problem since both lenses are designed for two different purposes. A prime brings little to no barrel distortion which makes it choice for videographers, it also brings a better lack of chromatic aberration, and a far superior aperture therefore better bokeh. Zoom lenses on the other hand are better suited for photography since distortion can aways be fixed in post. Nevertheless both great at what they do and always useful to have both!
@LoFiAxolotl
@LoFiAxolotl Год назад
being a prime or zoom has nothing to do with distortion... most videographers like zooms... especially the fujinons... also nothing to do with any CA... and Bokeh especially in video isn't something you want... you want a deep depth of field to tell a story... Primes are for when every aspect of a shot is predictable... it's for studios... for sets... haven't met a working photographer who prefers a prime over a zoom in the field except if they shoot on a Leica Rangefinder

@TeddyCavachon
@TeddyCavachon Год назад
It is important to understand that distance to nearest object vs background not focal length controls near/far size perspective. If for example you shoot a face from 3, 6, and 9 feet you will see a change in the relative sizes of nose and ears. Some distances will be more flattering than others. When that is the goal find the distance at which the facial proportions are most flattering THEN select the focal length which produces the ideal in camera crop. On APS-C bodies 24-70mm will allow full figure to head and shoulders from 8-12 ft. a distance which flatters most faces the most. On full frame 24-105mm is the better choice or 24-200mm if wanting tight headshot crops in camera. That said the the goal isn’t always to flatter a subject by using “seen-by-eye-normal” perspective shooting distance but understanding the cause and effect results in less trial and error when doing so.

@johansphoto 10 месяцев назад
It does not matter which lens you use, you will always miss shots you could have taken with another lens. Sometimes a 24-70 is too short, too slow or not wide enough for the photo you want to take. And with a prime you need to move more and be more creative. With a zoom it is easy to be lazy and just zoom in on the "best" composition from where you stand, and thus missing out on a better composition that an experienced prime shooter who knows his focal length can find. I also find that I am more creative and less intimidating with a small lens than with a big zoom.

@whengrapespop5728
@whengrapespop5728 Год назад
What matters isn’t the math (unless you’re shooting a movie and have to exactly match settings), what matters is your histogram and how you interpret it with the knowledge of what you’re photographing. If you don’t want to change your shutter, you might have to change aperture. If you don’t want to change aperture, you might have to change ISO. All have their “side effects”, so if you don’t want to change anything, you need to somehow handle the light of the location/shot.
