I could never justify to myself paying the prices Apple charge for their products. Have been quite happy with the DJI Osmo Pocket 3. It doesn't do ProRes but the footage looks ok. Even the onboard mic is pretty decent. Good low light performance and 4K slo mo @ 120fps.

My sentiments exactly. I'm leaning toward a "normal" iPhone 15. Apple does a great job of selling "the dream" rather than the (real) pro solution.

Robbie Cummings films and edits on that phone and I was going to get one but being an ex-ITV camera operator I just can’t move away from a handyman, in fact I use the camera which you recommended a few years ago and it’s still going strong. I also use DJI Pocket 3 which is amazing.

Yep, Robbie does amazing stuff and I must ask him what format he's using and how he does his audio (though I suspect it's not so critical as his footage tends to be B-roll with his music as a soundtrack over.

Hi David, your video pretty much demonstrates that old saw of choosing the right tool for the job, basically. The amount of videos on YT of people trying to turn a product into something it was clearly never really designed for is incredible, from people solemnly putting ND filters on their action camera (and thus totally undermining its stabilisation) to those pimping out iPhones in the way you illustrate here. I recently covered a trade show in Stuttgart and needed the lightest and most compact carry-on solution possible (the bag had to hold clothes too). I ended up shooting stills on my iPhone and video on a Pocket 3. Great combination. I edited everything on an M1 iPad Pro using Davinci Resolve and a Samsung T7. But if I'm driving to a location and need to 'get serious' , it will be my brace of Lumix S5s that I pack, plus of course a selection lenses , mics and tripods.

Yeah, the reason I didn't buy a Pocket is because streaming on it seems to be a bit clunky whereas the phone is better set up for it, to a degree.

That's quite a rig you've come up with! I had a hard time hearing you as I was laughing so much thinking of my own wonder device accessorizing. I haven't attempted to use pro res, I can't even get good audio from airpods as demonstrated by other creators. Is the ProRes faff worth it over using the normal shooting mode or possibly a 3rd party video recording app? Maybe I should refresh my memory on features of my phone😂

Arguably it is if you like colour grading the footage and having the most latitude in the levels to squeeze the most dynamic range out of the image.

Living with Cybertruck on the auto focus channel. At 15:36 you see in the reflection it’s just an iPhone. Currently at 2.6M views so it’s up to the job. If you really want to get into it properly start with 1tb model. Then use an anker MagSafe battery pack. Audio… record externally. Anything float 32 will be fine. Having said all that I prefer a camera 🎥 😂

I’m under the impression that magsafe charging is pretty low wattage so might not keep up? And buying the 1TB phone is hugely expensive ☹️

I think it’s about £500 extra to go from 128gb to 1tb. As you are a professional (and talented) film maker, coming up on 300k combined subs, I’d class that as a business expense. A builder buying tools etc. Also peace of mind that the SSD won’t come loose is priceless.

Audio clicks and SSD stability might be related to static electricity. We ran into problems with it at dayjob when we tested iPads and iPhones with USB hubs for livestreaming. There is no good ways to ground the system and changes in static electricity from handling causes weird glitches and dropouts to signals.

I didn't feel a 5x zoom over 3x was worth the extra money and I didn't feel I needed a bigger screen for something I wanted to be pocketable / portable.

And don't you look a mug if someone calls you!!!! :-) For your pouch try a military disposal. The phone is roughly the size of a rifle magazine so an ammo pouch may work for the bag - you may have to jury rig a carry strap (but you've shown supreme skills in jury rigging - so no problem there) , but usually thats pretty easy with military kit - it's deigned to be modular. And if not an ammo pouch, then maybe a radio pouch. The pouch will probablu not be the perfect size, but you'll probablu find somethin servicable. And smallrig make clmaps for holding cable. But I think that your learning the same lesson we learned with DLSRs - the best thing for video is a vdeo camera.
@TubeShooterMag
@TubeShooterMag 3 месяца назад
That's an excellent idea for a carry pouch, cheers! The trouble with DSLRs etc for me are a) awful ergonomics and b) generally no good for live streaming. Granted, the phone's no better for point a but it does point b so it has advantages as an "all in one, multitasking" device.

It seems more like a gimmick to me and a proper camera, perhaps with a SmallRig on it is probably better for serious recording. I would not go beyond the quick vlog style video for the iPhone. "run and gun" is what it is best for if you want to go largely unnoticed. I do attach the Røde wireless GO II directly into the USBC of the iPhone(before that I used a wired lav with the iPhone to TRRS dongle on my iPhone 13) and it was a good solution for recording in the car and I guess you can use the phone holder on a tripod, but anything beyond that, the iPhone probably isn't the right tool for the job. I do record in HDR on the iPhone still, but quickly decided not to use ProRes and LOG. It is not the right tool for that type of job. Also I noticed that Apple apparently only enables quick transfers with their own cables, I had slow transfers into my Mac. When I looked in the systems information, only the original cable gave me 10gb. If I want to record in LOG, I use my old Panasonic GH5s and I think the Sony is a good choice. I use the "cheap" ZV-E10 for webcam and recording at my desk, because I wanted something with a better sensor (clean HDMI into an elgato camlink and a dummy battery) and are now trying to use it for more than that but it doesn't offer the options you would want if you are serious about shooting video. I should have found a less expensive hobby. 🤣

Entertaining rant: I look at these people adding lens and stuff to the iPhone and I go WHY? Just get a real camera with real lens. I'm still using the iPhone 14 ProMax I have lots of Camera and I use different camera for different things: Sony FX3, FX30, A7iv, ZV-1, ZV-E10, Fuji XT4) DJI Pocket 3, Insta 360 RS 1inch. The Pocket 3 is great, small and you can connect wireless mic with easy! and as a bonus it has a Gimbal I do you my iPhone on a Mobile 6 for reach and remote control and with the Zacuto Smart-Z finder for film location work because there are some powerful APP that give you the ability to plan for the film on the phone (AMAZING APP called Cadrage) My Dad was an engineer and he taught me early on use the right tool for the right job and Camera are no different. After seeing the behind the scenes of Apple shooting the iPhone release on iPhone (with 2 million dollar of support equipment) I go seriously that just doesn't make sense for anyone else!

This could be one of the strangest video I've seen. You seem to highlight problems that you clearly found solutions to. Yes the phone on its own is limiting for any serious videographer so a rigging is necessary, but this rig is still very small considering what you get in terms of results. So I just don't get where the real problem is. And if the issue is how to rig your setup more effectively, then the cage manufacturers are the ons to build a cage that would accommodate a small hub, ssd, and power bank. Not a big problem at all. iPhone is still a pocketable powerhouse of a gear to take around. all the other accessories can be packed in a separate little carry on. This video was needless.
@TubeShooterMag
@TubeShooterMag Месяц назад
This is one of the strangest comments I've ever read. I clearly explain what the issues are in the video; how clumsy even a small rig is and how the components don't necessarily work well together. And yes of course the cage manufacturers need to build a better iphone rig. Or anyone else who can integrate the items better, quite frankly. This comment was needless.

@@TubeShooterMag Seeing as it's android based it's basicly plug and play here, nothing is locked down like Apple, Usb c to usb works with just a simple adapter same with a usb c to 3.5 jack spitter for external mics headphones etc, As for storage the phones 128gb built into it, but as I mentioned above you can just plug in a usb c flash drive, or usb c to normal usb then a simple normal usb 3.0 device etc, Samsung has a built in file explorer so you can access everything and just simply copy/paste to these device then copy over to pc/mac etc
@TubeShooterMag
@TubeShooterMag 3 месяца назад
Hmm but you can do that on the iPhone 15 (Pro) as it has USB-C. You’d still end up with a hotch-potch of storage / audio / hub bolted somehow onto the side of the Samsung.

@@TubeShooterMag That is true it can look like a botch job but it works, tbh the only other solulttion without all these wires cables mics etc, is that new camera the vloggers are all raving about the DJI osmo pocket 3, 4K/120fps, three-axis mechanical stabilization and tons of other features
@TubeShooterMag
@TubeShooterMag 3 месяца назад
I was considering one of those quite seriously but my particular uses include streaming and while the Pocket can do that, it all has to be controlled through an app and is a bit clunky. But for pure filming alone, I'm wondering if the Pocket wouldn't have been a better idea.

6:16 you need the male part long ... snigger! I just don'g see the point of this, the whole time I was thinking USE A PROPER CAMERA. Hubs are often not symmetrical for data it keeps the cost down, usually in the spec sheet it tells you which port is the fast one. Wild educated guess: The wired microphone has a long (aerial), cable, probably picking up interference from the phone's transmitters, try it in airplane mode. I hate smartphones, I only use mine for TXT and the odd phone call. Probably an age thing, baby boomer ....
