The problem with steriPEN water filters.

This is the part where I talk about a product that I’ve used and completely lost faith in. I will NEVER use a steriPEN UV water filter backpacking or bikepacking! Too many things to fail - the UV bulb can just stop working and definitely won’t hold up to the abuse served up from bikepacking. And I never want to rely on batteries for my water filtering. Analog it is - FOREVER!

thats a pretty obvious drawback that I wouldnt rely on. Also, if the bulb burns out ever they replace it for free. I wouldnt rely on any batter powered device without a backup.

Not such a great review. Steri pens kill viruses and may be with their 3 ounces to carry depending where you go. Not a “digital”water filter. For a specific use case that a Saywer will not address

Was it because you didnt have batteries or because it was a catastrophic failure of the system???

I can't remember. Perhaps both. I do remember it was very cold out in the mid 30's so maybe it killed the batteries.

filter then sterilise.. but I guess sterilise than filter is probably easyer.. say befree + steripen. Filter takes care of debree, vu of viruses.

Thanks for watching. I've read I don't need to worry much about viruses in North America and more about bacteria.

Just take some chlorine, iodine, colloidal silver etc. Just in case the pen fails.

good advice. I now bring aqua tabs in addition to my filter. I've switched from a sawyer to a salomon soft flask filter since it cleans easier and makes a smaller more compact package. I love it.
