UPDATE: Chase Pay Yourself Back categories have updated! The Chase Sapphire Reserve now includes groceries, gas stations, and the annual fee, but only at 1.25¢ per point, a downgrade in my opinion.

This summer, I upgraded to reserve from preferred since I had over 280k points, and obviously it was worth it because of the 1.5 per point. Used them all for part of my travel for two months in Europe, and during that time racked more points from further travel spending. Mine is due for renewal in July, and I am not sure I will renew it. Even tough I am travelling again international this summer, but dont have enough points to justify the renewal fee. Also, I got reimbursed for delayed flight and hotel expenses over $675, even though it was not easy; lots of paper work. So basically I made money from having the card. But the card is worth it if one has enough points and travel a lot. Otherwise no. Also being able to use some of best lounges in Europe. was a perk.

The CSR has credits for doordash and instacart that combine to be $240 in credits. I definitely agree that the CSP is the better option between these 2 cards for the majority of people. Also, the Chase line of cards could definitely use a refresh, especially the CSR. However, the CSR does pack a punch for domestic trips with that 1.5x boost on your points through the travel portal, but that's the main selling point of it in my opinion. If I could get another Sapphire bonus right now, I would consider adding this card, but the Amex Plat or Venture X makes a lot more sense. I hope that changes this year though! Your math does not check out. Lack of credits? I have a plat and was actually surprised at how many CSR had. Effective $250 AF after $300 travel. GE - $100 credit. -$60 DD (till 2025). -180 IC (Till July 2024). -$100 PPass. Thats $250 offset by $440. That's $190 returned. That doesnt even count any offset if you count the added redemption value on travel at 1.5cpp. And assessing against a SUB is just foolish unless you're just churning. Thats gone after year 1. I suppose if you don't travel frequently or eat, then a card meant for people that travel frequently and also eat, is not the card for you. That doesnt make it a bad card. It means it doesnt fit your spending patterns.
@KevinYang
@KevinYang Год назад
That's a great point for sure! It's all a matter of how well you can really use the credits (on any card really), and if you decide to redeem points via that 1.5 cpp method. For example, if you go through travel partners like Hyatt, 2 cpp+ is not much of a stretch and something that's possible on the CSP too! For a travel card, I think the Amex Plat and/or the Venture X are very strong competitors that can fit most people's habits, with the Amex Plat offering more but likely to a smaller audience, or the Venture X offering a bit less, but much simpler and lower AF!

CSR is the card to get. I have the platinum card as well. You get a better priority pass with CSR ( restaurants), you get primary rental car coverage not secondary. The reward rates are better in every category except flights. Paying for anything but flight tickets with the platinum card is (1X).CSR gives you lyft credit, door dash credit too. Centurion lounges are nice but they are over crowded, anytime i went it was a zoo, oh pretty much the same is true for sky clubs.I also got my card way out of 5/24 so if you have a relationship with them you can get the card even if your over 5/24.The hilton and mariott gold is ok, but people who travela lot they will mostly have one choice and they will have higher status then gold.
@KevinYang
@KevinYang Год назад
Thanks for the breakdown! There are definitely use cases that the CSR could be great! But I think you can cover many of the benefits by using just the CSP (primary car rental coverage, almost there for category spend, unlocking transfer partners), while using other cards like the Venture X or Amex Plat for other premium perks like Elite Status, various credits (IF you can justify using them), and others. Primary airport also matters imo, given many have 0 non-lounge perks on the PP unfortunately.
