something about converting my lawn from green grass to native plants has really made this issue take up A LOT of space in my mind. It's also been this weird feeling that I'm doing what should be so obviously right (in a moral & environmental sense) but so many people around me have looked down on me and made such snide comments about it SO - here's to educating those who have go along with such a problematic standard without even considering the history & the impacts!

this is why grass lawns are problematic and wasteful. Maintaining a pristine lawn demands excessive water, pesticides, and fertilizers, which not only deplete our precious water resources but also contribute to pollution and harm local ecosystems. Grass lawns offer little biodiversity, making them ecological dead zones. It’s time to rethink our love affair with grass lawns and embrace more sustainable landscaping alternatives that support our environment and promote healthier, more resilient communities.

Regarding kids and dogs: both love to play in more diverse landscapes! Children love to explore meadows, prairies, and wooded areas and can use the plants and other species to inspire imaginative play. Think tree-climbing, makeshift shelters, hiding behind rocks, sword-fighting with sticks, turning over downed logs to see the bugs, and so much more. Dogs enjoy exploring and sniffing everything, and the wider range of trees, plants, bugs, birds, and other wildlife the happier they are. Natural spaces are much more exciting than lawns for everyone.

My only fear is that ticks enjoy the long grass 😭 does anyone have any advice to assuage my fear? 😅
@yuyannan
@yuyannan 3 месяца назад
@@Rosie-xm7ry If you plan to spend time in tall grass or woods and are afraid of ticks, dress appropriately. Long trousers, full shoes (not sandals), pull socks over your trouser legs. If necessary, use tick repellent. Shower and check your body carefully when you get home. And the clothes go straight to wash after. Ticks can happen anyway, but don't panic. Remove them properly, observe the bite site and if there is a reaction, the doctor will give you an antibiotic and everything will be fine.

PEOPLE LIVING IN CALIFORNIA: we have similar legislation protecting us from HOA fines/retaliation for planting native drought tolerant plants. We also have the amazing resource calscape which helps you find native plants for your location, bc California is also a huge state with several biomes in it. Calscape is a database that can help you find native plants for your watering and drainage situation and even has general and care info for each plant AND lists nurseries where you can find them. It’s an amazing tool that everyone in the state should utilize heavily, our native ecosystems need all the care and attention we can give it. PLANT NATIVES, FUCK GRASS

Clearly, Shelby has hit a nerve with this video, and I simply can’t stop commenting. My big problem when I first wanted to plant natives to my Chicago area lawn was to find anywhere to get the plants. A lot of people in the Midwest use prairie moon nursery, where you can order plants and seeds online. It’s important to find nurseries that sell plants native to YOU. (Plenty of Illinois natives won’t survive in Texas, and vice versa.) Once you get to know more people planting natives, you’ll probably find they’ll share plants when they have too many, which happens, or give you cuttings from plants you can root that way. Thanks for listening. I’ll crawl back into my hole now. 😂

Our city is in a bit of a water crisis at the moment. One of our water mains broke and is taking several weeks to fix. The whole city is on an outdoor watering ban until the pipe is fixed. Our backyard clover lawn is beautiful and green still, while our front yard which is still grass is not looking so hot. The amount of drinking water that we use for grass is crazy, when clover thrives with just rainfall.

Ahh thank you Shelby! I was the one on Tiktok that said I was confused and this helped sooo much. I think my hoa encourages us to not have lawns. We are only allowed 60% grass in our whole yard. Front yard HAS to be rock. And this is because we live in co and dont have alot of water. We have a hybrid yard. Most is rock, garden and then the rest left is grass. Our chickens loveee “weeds” so much BUT we will get fined if we have “weeds” in front. Also our hoa cost 50$ a year, literally cant imagine the 300$+ ones

This video was so well-researched, and I loved how you covered both the science and the cultural history. This would make a great series, if you cover an issue from multiple angles. I still have a small yard with grass because my family plays out there every day, but we have a lot of native perennials growing in our garden, and every time I add a new plant or expand the garden I research it first and choose something native. We also set aside part of our yard for growing veggies, herbs, and fruit. In the last place I lived, one side of the yard was in shade, and moss had naturally grown instead of grass-- it was amazing-- so soft and maintenance-free!

Thank you for this video! It's definitely needed. People really need to start waking up to how detrimental lawns are, I'm going to share this video with my friends and family. Here in the UK most houses have lawns too, and I know quite a few people who use an excessive amount of weed-killer and pesticide on their lawns. In the UK we've had a massive loss of biodiversity in the past few years and a dramatic drop in the amount of pollinators (mainly due to intensive agriculture and overdevelopment, but I think that lawnmowing and the toxic chemicals that people use on their gardens probably also contributed to that loss, and it wouldn't hurt if all homeowners with gardens could do their bit by allowing native plants to grow in their lawns, and not mowing them) ❤

But, I wanted to point out the one argument I've heard in favor of lawns that makes sense to me. That is that lawns are a pretty fool proof way to maintain ground cover to prevent soil erosion. You don't have to know that much about plants to maintain a lawn. But I think there are much better solutions obviously and I'm looking forward to a beautiful prairie in my backyard someday!

God I love it when I meet people who hate grass lawns like I do. and the thing is you can have grass lawns especially if your area is known for its tall grasses. But that’s the thing it’s TALL grasses that provide an ecosystem for bugs and snails and slugs. even grass is important but not the mainstream type of grass lawns. I live in the midwest we have plains and plains of grass but it’s tall and makes up a part of the ecosystem for nature to use. modern grass lawns are awful and I hate them especially the spots that are like a small triangle of grass AHHHH just plant some flowers that are native to your area put a bush there something that doesn’t need to be “cut” every week

I LOVE how passionately Shelby talks about this stuff. :) Last year I let our backyard grass grow as it pleased for like 5 months (I like in the UK and I have a small-ish backyard that is fenced but right next to our neighbors' house, and they can see our backyard from their windows), and one of our neighbors came to me one time and told me that "we should mow our grass, because otherwise rats will make a nest inside". It sounded like bs a bit, but because I am an anxious person and a people-pleaser I did mow our lawn. I regret it now. I honestly don't think the rats would want to nest at our place anyway because we have two (indoor) cats and there are many outdoors cats walking around our neighborhood. But yeah, what a great video, Shelby!! :) Honestly, who wouldn't want their garden/backyard/lawn to be full of flowers, butterflies and happy chirping birds???

I'm glad to find your video. You really know what you're talking about. I myself removed all the grass when I moved in. I put in a xeriscape. It's in the suburbs where , when I was moving in, I called it "a sea-of-grass neighborhood." I thought all the neighbors would hate me for doing it. But they didn't. In fact, one day when we were being water restricted because of drought, my neighbor, whose grass lawn was mowed using a riding mower, said to me, "I wish I had your yard now." I was amazed to hear this. I've never had any flack about it. My next-door neighbors bought their house partly because of my xeriscape! They have a very reduced lawn with shrubs and plants instead. I have beautiful flowers growing instead of grass. People walk by and compliment me on my yard., especially in the spring. They drive by and stop and compliment me. They ask if they can take pictures, and of course I say yes. Recently the guest of a neighbor from several states away took pictures to take back to his home state. After many years having the xeriscape, it has all been very positive, nothing negative. All the neighbors love my yard and comment on it all the time.

Fellow grass lawn hater here, commenting from Oregon! The county directly next to me is actually “The Grass Seed Capital of the World!” and I see the sign proudly saying that every time I drive down the freeway. This is because the PNW is one of the only places in the US that gets enough rainfall to grow these grasses. One interesting effect of this is that our allergy season is HORRIBLE. And with climate change making allergy seasons longer every year it’s just miserable if you have “hay fever” for a few months straight every year. I can’t wait to own my own home and get the certification to have a pollinator garden where a lawn would be. I also loathe the yearly maintenance of yard work because my parents forced us to help maintain their yards growing up. I can’t wait to leave everything where it is and feel good that I’m helping the ecosystem at the same time!!

I live in Northern Europe and my parents have fought so hard with their grass lawn bc I must assume global warming is making it hard to survive here too? It just won't grow in certain parts of their garden 😅 all I want is for them to let moss and clover grow instead

I live in a block of apartments that is surrounded by lawn. I think it would be much better to replant it with native ground covers. Australia is a dry continent and this area is expensive to maintain as has to be watered, we employ a gardening company to mow it and the only use it is a dog toilet ( the dog owners do clean up after the dog).

The first year I started not to mow, I had two "kind" neighbors mow the land that abutted each of their properties without bothering to ask me if that's what I wanted. They were the ones that called themselves kind, not me. I'd never presume to do something to a neighbor's house without talking to them first. That's the culture surrounding grass...that they are doing you a favor! For years after, I had anxiety every time I heard a lawn mower and feared I'd have a cop sent to my house because they neighbors couldn't possibly understand. It helped to put up a sign that I got from Wild Seed Project about being a wildlife preserve.

Just this past weekend, my toddler played in a meadow of native grasses and wildflowers (in Germany). There were many kids running through it, playing games of tag and hide and seek. Meadows can be just as fun for kids as lawns! It's just a different way to play.

Yes! There are a million better uses for the land than lawns. I know here in California lawns have become less popular because of the water usage, but there are still way too many of them around.

I wish i could get it through my parents head to not mow their grass every other day. It takes so much time we could spend doing something else. Plus not to mention it takes resources to mow the lawn (gas powered mower) 😢. My parents used a round up powder to get rid of the dandelions which 1 looks so cute! And 2 are great for making your own dandelion oil. Now it's going to take years for the round up powder to go away. I cant even garden this year because of that herbicide.

Can you do a video about the difference between electric and manual mowers? I will be moving into a house and nobody seems to think a manual mowers makes sense or that it's too much work. So is an electric one even okay for the environment? Also can you please talk more about how you started and did the bee wildlife. Where did your hat? What a great video

Idk how big your lawn is, but I have used a manual lawnmower, and honestly I find it easier to deal with.
@TheGrownUpMillennial
@TheGrownUpMillennial 3 месяца назад
We have both. I use the manual for our front garden to keep stone paths manageable and the electric for the grass in the back. It’s important to keep the manual blades sharpened. And it doesn’t handle very tall grass well, so it’s important to keep a more regular mowing schedule. So electric works better on overgrown grass and I don’t find I have to sharpen the blades much. But the manual is much quieter so you can do it early in the morning or late at night without upsetting neighbor. Manual also takes up a lot less room, can handle uneven surfaces more safely (not going to fling stones at you or others), and is more meditative to use (but also more of a workout).

I got a manual one when I lived in a house. We had several trees on the property and twigs were constantly jamming the blades. Really depends on what your yard is like

Okay, so I can say that mowing my dad's 5-acre lawn would be impossible with a manual lawnmower. He grows brome, a type of grass, for a friend's horses and cattle. The cattle farmer cuts and harvests it for him. I agree that it isn't good for the environment, and I have suggested several times that he turned it into an orchard. That's only one of the conflicts between me and my father.

as a christian, i genuinely believe that the type of focus on restoring native plants to your area and removing invasive plants is biblical. the bible mentions that we are to be good stewards of the world (genesis: it’s not “fill the earth and subdue it”, the hebrew word is closer to “fill the earth and furnish/replenish it”. i am also a junior in high school, and my christian school has juniors and seniors spend the whole year writing a rhetorical paper on a thesis, which they will present in front of an audience (small for juniors, whole auditorium for seniors) and i am genuinely thinking about writing my junior or senior thesis on native plants and why i believe that God wants us to preserve (replenish!) the earth and the ecosystems that he created. why would he create such diverse and fascinating and beautiful and complicated ecosystems if we are called to cover them over with single-species green carpets?? anyway, thank you for reading and i’m going to go outside and plant a native tree (i’ve been meaning to for a while and the poor thing has been sitting in its pot for a couple weeks). bye!

I love the Homegrown National Park website for a good overview of what’s native where, and it’s a cool community of people contributing in their own small way to increasing biodiversity and together making a big difference. If I had any outdoor space of my own I would definitely have a native plant garden.

I just moved to CO and privileged enough to become a homeowner here, and I began volunteering for a Food Justice org that I later found out fought for bills that a) prevented HOAs from denying xeriscape lawn designs and b) allowed homeowners to have urban gardens in front and back lawns. My front lawn has been converted to natives only and my back yard is currently rewilding itself to prepare for a food forest in the future.

As a non-American I have literally cultural shock. Until now I couldn't imagine that someone could get a fine or go to jail for not mowing the lawn. Disgusting! Thank you for both socio-cultural and environmental aspects. This deeper connection is so much needed in every discussion. I hope we will see on your channel the whole transformation process of your front yard. It would be great inspiration, eventhough everyone have to do own research in their native species ☘💚

I enjoyed this video. I argue every year with my hubby because he always wants to fertilize the lawn and I do not want any chemicals on our land. He won this year but only the front. I will never allow the back to be touched by chemicals and I will try to convince him next year again to quit treating the front.

Really spectacular soup-to-nuts explanation of why we have lawns in the 1st place! What a marketing scam. I am working to reduce the size of our lawn, we have lived here for 40 years and have never put a chemical down and the lawn, which we do cut, is mostly “weeds.” I will look into native milkweed plants for the New England area. Thank you!

YESSS. I hate manicured lawns! They're TERRIBLE. I personally love seeing the wild lawns native to each state! All the little critters running/flying around? One of the best things to see! Warms my heart. It gives so much personality to a home to ya know? I already told my bf that whenever him and I buy a home (hopefully 😅) that we will be making the yard a wildlife habitat! HOA's are the worst. They should be illegal. Like who are you to tell ME what to do with MY home/lawn? 🙄

I was born and raised in Las Vegas, so we've been in a perpetual drought for over 25 years. It has been a struggle to get people to switch over to desertscape from their lawns. Water prices have been driven up exponentially just to disincentivize people from lawn upkeep. Meanwhile, a few years ago, I owned a house in South Dakota and I just left my lawn unkempt and I had little white mushrooms appear every autumn. My neighbors hated me because I had a tall, unkept lawn but I didn't care. I liked my little mushrooms

Here where I live in northern Utah, EVERYONE has to have perfect lawns. The Mormon church requires it. Our yard is not perfect and stands out. I don't pull most of the milkweed. It's blooming rn and is so pretty! I want more monarchs! I also planted sooooo many native species and I've never seen so many pollinators before. Our grass may not be perfect, yellow in some spots, crab grass in others because we've never used pesticides or herbicides and never fertilized our yard (although it does need it). I'm not against lawns, but to use Kentucky Bluegrass when your area doesn't support it is wild to me. Get a drought tolerant grass at the very least. Also, we've never used pesticides on anything. People really get bugs in their lawns? Some weeds are invasive though. Here I've been dealing with Hoary cress (whitetop). It's roots go down to 30 feet and spread via rhizomes like bindweed does. Planting native species has helped a little. Also please don't pull up milkweed. The monarchs need it and it's blooms are pretty! It self seeds every year pretty heavily so pulling up a few here and there is fine, especially for my native plants which I don't have a ton of each plant. Anyways, having a perfect lawn doesn't define you as a person
