I am working on this transmission out of my D22 Frontier and figured I would share some warnings for the would be do it yourselfer. This trans type is also common in a ton of other Nissan models dating back to the mid 70's, like the Z car, D21 hardbody and S13 and S14 240sx.
Standard disclaimer: I am NOT a professional mechanic, so don't do this at home. I take no responsibility for your mistakes. I make enough of my own that I am already responsible for!

I wish I had one for my current project, a 1979 AMC. Sadly, finding one is almost impossible.

@@3rdworldgarage450 cool a AMC . parts are hard enough to find , my friend has a 70 AMX 390 4 spd we were lucky it was 95% there . good luck on your build. cheers

@@mitchelljohnson9548 Thanks! I have a lot of parts already but finding sheetmetal is nearly impossible! I decided not to put this build on the channel because its more fun when I don't have to film it. However, I may do a few videos of component repairs or maybe one on who made what since it's quite interesting just how much of a hodge podge the parts are.

Good video - thanks! I'm considering rebuilding my 200,000-mile Xterra KA24DE 5-speed manual and this is very helpful information. Mercifully its not my daily driver so even if it takes me a long time, I'll be OK. Or I might bite the bullet and just purchase a rebuilt / warrantied unit. Still up in the air.

I took pictures of every thing with a number or letter on the side coming off the shafts to know exactly how to put it back together. How bout the way the shift rods have to be disassembled inside the tranny before removing the tail shaft... that was a fun experience for me.

I just completely tore my FS5W71C down out of my 1994 4wd and all I did was grab the back of the gear with a screwdriver and it all budged out easily then got it with the back of a claw hammer to slide it out the rest of the way. No kidding. I saw this video before I tore it down and was afraid. But mine honestly slid right off with a little leverage. Slid right out with the gear behind it. Gear and all.

@alds491 4 года назад
Upon further inspection, the factory service manual has a slightly different layout comparing 2wd and 4wd. That most certainly is the cause of my bushing coming out easier. It slides on instead of pressed on.

Good morning I have a this transmission. We just put it together and and when we turn it is hard to do so. Is this normal or it needs to be soft? thank you have a nice day

Unfortunately, this video was shot when I was first experimenting with RU-vid and I threw up a number of videos just to see if anyone would watch them, so I hadn't worked all that out yet. I may revisit this at another time since this trans is really worn out and I have another core that has a lot fewer miles on it. The truck currently has 430,000 miles of mostly city driving since it lived most of its life delivering pizza and I really abused it (I bought it new in 1998).

@3rdworldgarage450 your good bud, another channel has a full break. I can't believe I spiral split the counter shaft. The spline at the break is twisted. I only opened up to see why 3rd and 4th felt unattached and found that shaft split never pulling the bell side open. Which now the I found a replacement after a few months. Literally nissan says out of stock, and everyone else didn't list it . Then I'm looking at a machining company, and they showed main, input, and cluster gear for 4x4. The cluster gear nis-8 is the counter shaft. Kinda tarded how you can go to the part stores ask for a axle nut the claim don't sell them, hub nut... no. ? Spindle nut oh here it is. It's pretty annoying dealing with that all the time never get something take 5 minutes to fix and been to 5 other shops before me. Now, all the shops refer me to the BS. And that's why they called me Dirty Tom, I take on thw jobs. No one else would want to attempt someone who has to. And I guess grease and all. Have a good week. Thank you for making the video have been a long while since a Datsun 5 speed rebuild.

Pretty sure that big gear you called 4th is 1st. 4th is direct drive, that's why it's quieter.

I can't get my 2001 Frontier to shift into 5th-- just hear gear-grinding noise. What you y'all think is the reason? 1-4 and reverse are OK. Will whatever is wrong with 5th gear cause prolems for the other gears? One problem is that I don't have a good indoor workspace. Thanks in advance!
@spec510
@spec510 5 лет назад
That 5th gear bearing race you say is impossible to remove short of a right angle grinder is silly. A cheap Harbor Freight press does it easily.
@tuksee
@tuksee 4 года назад
yeah, I just heated bearing race and couple hammer hits and shaft was out.
@tuksee
@tuksee 4 года назад
and I strip down 2 gearboxes, no pain at all. This gearbox was easy compared to Toyota's T50 gearbox that box is pain in the ass because main shaft center bearing is on the main shaft so you need very long bearing puller. OR freight press and I dont have one.
@slydways01
@slydways01 3 года назад
I second this. An angle grinder is extreme. Mine didnt want to budge with heat and a hammer, but a puller with extended arms heaved it off with no drama

Working on a 2004 Frontier do you have to take the whole transmission out plus the bellhousing replace a input shaft bearing it looks like you can take just take the transmission part off with out taking the bell housing off

@@3rdworldgarage450 found pieces on what looks like bearing peices when I changed the trans oil
@3rdworldgarage450
@3rdworldgarage450 Год назад
Yes, you have to take them out as one piece. The bellhousing is the front half of the transmission case and houses gears and shafts that would be nearly impossible to align with it in the truck.

If your looking for the counter shaft and nissan says it's obsolete your in luck it is zwnis8 usa standard gear randy has over 90. It says 4cyl 4x4 ignore the 4x4

So I just bought a rebuilt 5W71C off eBay. I installed it, but before adding oil, I decided to dry shift it to test it. And I can't get it to shift into gear. In theory, if its a good rebuild, they should have greased it and I should be able to dry shift it a few times without adding gear oil, right?

@@projectD831 Don't know, but if youre still curious 3 years later: I bought a second transmission off eBay and this one was able to shift like it was supposed to, without oil. I installed it and it has been working great throughout all these years. I started a refund/dispute with the original seller. He never replied so I won the case and got a refund without having to ship it back. I offered to ship him back the broken transmission for free (paying shipping, because it felt like the right thing to do to a beginner who was DIYing this sh*t just like I do) but he never replied. So I've have a hunk of useless metal sitting in my shed for the past 3 years. I dont have the time or energy to fix it myself. I should also say, I don't have any ill will towards the guy, it kind of sounds like the mistake that I would personally make if I suddenly decided to rebuild transmissions

If you don't have a Nissan Field Service Manual you have no right to blame nissan for poor engineering when you don't work according to their instructions. BTW you mistook the gears, from front to back, 4th 3rd 2nd 1st reverse 5th. engage 2nd and reverse when cranking on the mainshaft/countershaft nuts

@@3rdworldgarage450 The large amount of mis-information made me think you didn't have access to one. These transmissions are very well built and with proper maintenance can last up to 500K miles. It certainly is worth rebuilding one if you have the time/experience/patience. It beats having to purchase a used transmission with worn bearings. Hope you have a better experience in the future.
