▶Craftsman Profile
Takuya Kinami / Adachi Hyogu
At the southern tip of Kamigyo Ward, in Kyoto, just north of Nijo Castle on Inokuma Street, you will find the office and workshop of Adachi Hyoguten; a maker of traditional Kyoto art mountings called hyogu; in its current location since 1926. Adachi Hyoguten creates and mends fusuma (sliding paper partitions) and shoji (sliding paper doors and screens), both indispensable parts of Kyoto architecture. Adachi Hyoguten also handles gakuso (framed pictures), byobu (folding screens), and kakejiku (hanging scrolls).
Please enjoy watching the Japanese craftsmanship!!!!

Excellent video. Thanks for the share! You should get a higher work table so he's not hunched over, not good ergonomics! You should get two stations to work at or have an adjustable table they make them electric now

How interesting. He uses his senses to know how much water to glue. When I use wrapping paper for my art I’ve learned by sight how big to cut the paper. I was watching him carefully as he was brushing the paper after he stuck it on the wall and no wrinkles. So I just tried that with a small piece of scrap thin wrapping paper glued onto a piece of cardboard. I tried the brushing like him and no wrinkles! Thanks so much for solving this problem that just couldn’t figure out how to solve for years and watching him doing his thing solved my problem in seconds. I can now glue on wrapping paper for certain things on my art and no more wrinkles. I have the perfect brush to use to go over my glued on paper too. I’m just thrilled to pieces. You are indeed educational.

The merchant and the folding screen(Byoubu) won't stand up right away. If you try to put the folding screen(Byoubu) up straight, it will fall over. In Janan it is an analogy that a merchant cannot survive in the world unless he suppresses his emotions and accepts the wishes of his customers.

Why is the thin paper cut into sections instead of being pasted whole like the thick paper is?

I guess it's the same reason why they rip the paper instead of cut with scissors. The ragged ends help the glue hold the outer large paper so it doesn't unstick as one whole piece?
