Brian May's comments on the Gloucester show: Great final show tonight on the Queen Extravaganza tour of the UK. It was in Gloucester. I was happy to be in the audience - it was well worth the trip. They performed the album “A Night at the Opera” in its entirety ! I don’t think I’ll ever hear The Prophet’s Song played to that degree of excellence again. Great musicianship, great dedication to detail, and nice presentation all round. Well done QE team. Rock on !
Late response but I suggest listening to it live at Earl's Court '77. Quite different than the studio version, but that's what Queen was all about, they didn't want to simpily do the same exact thing from studio to live, kinda like whats going on here
I can swear this song is extremely difficult. It is almost imposible to sing the acapella part without getting confused with your own voice and lose the right notes and tones. I mean, I've tried thousands times and I can't achieve the part correctly. This man is seriously talented, not even Freddie could do that acapella part live
@@RG-qc7dh It is hard by own Brian's words, the genius behind this composition. If you think you have better ears than him you are probably just tone deaf and did not realized it yet.
Tony Fordham Tyler, the drummer for QuEx, just said on his Instagram stories that EVERYTHING was done live, no tracks. You might not get to read it while it’s still there, as they disappear after 24hrs, unless he saves it to his Highlights. instagram.com/stories/tyler_fn_warren/2457767150449904865?igshid=n1wp4lascd1e
This song is far harder to perform live than many realize - especially for Mr. Martel. This song demands a huge range and the ability to sing in time with carefully set echo effects that allow the singer to sing harmony with himself live. It is much harder to do than it looks and this group does a terrific job. I would not have believed that this difficult song could be performed live again after Freddy passed and the guys do a great job here. I do wish they would come to Detroit...I'd love to hear this live. Apparently lightning struck twice when Freddy and Marc's voices were created. Great stuff. It must be very gratifying for the guys in Queen to hear this music sung and performed.
Enivan Nogueira Technically, he just naturally sounds like Freddie. While when he was singing with Queen Extravaganza, he was trying to sound closer to him, yes, but, the fact of the matter is that even if he wasn't singing a Queen song, he'd unintentionally sound like Freddie at points. Just listen to his iteration of Take on Me. He just has a similar singing voice, end of story. I don't mean to sound rude, however, I just wanted to clear that up, because, well, sounding like someone doesn't mean you're always an imitator
Curtis Peters thats why they picked him as winner in the contest to be the frontman of this Tribute band all hand picked by the Queen members. Awesome job.
The first thing I though when I saw the name of the song couldn't believe it. The second thing that came to my mind was "8 minutes" then I checked if this video was 8 minutes length. After that I basement crazy. Great performance.
This is great❤❤ I'm so happy, that they brought this song alive on the stage again. It's so hard song "now I know ","now I know "now I know ". So many people is happy about it and I don't get why are some people so upset and argumentative. I'm grateful for Mark MARTEL. I never had a chance to hear Freddie singing alive, thanks to him I can go to his concert and hear Freddie's voice at least similar to him We are lucky to have him. Freddie was unique only one, but sadly he is not with us anymore. His legacy carries on and through Mark we have a chance to hear it on the stage. I miss Freddie too 😔 and he will always be a king irreplaceable 🤴❤, but I appreciate that Mark is doing that and carry on and he is doing his best and is still humble. That's my opinion. I'm proud of him and guys that they are doing it. They don't have to it's their choice, but they make thousands of people happy 😊♥️ Thank you Mark 🙏💗
This song brings out the progressive rock roots of Queen, but they truly danced around definitions and boundaries. So much better than the state of pop rock today.
I just watched it again today. The impact this song had on me as a kid was just immense. Before yesterday i had not heard it for maybe 30 years but I still to this day I remember the now i knows.... who could forget that? Notes on the performance... well the singer is for sure charasmatic. But he is so as his own man, thankfully not jumping around in leotards or trying to ape Freddie's mannerisms.. The A capella section was stunning. Of course its a cover song but this band transcended above a mere cover tune. These dudes totally and completely believed it and I don't know if it was paying homage or... I don't know. Guitar playing (including bass) was superb, the dude had massive tone and just crushed those bad ass drop D power chords, played bitchin solos, dynamics... all good. The bassist just stands there and does everything right, like the dude in Queensryche (when i saw them I realized what a consummate professional this guy was). Anyway I don't even want to see the other stuff they have for awhile, just to let this set in. I saw somewhere where Brian May complemented these guys and that is awesome. Final thought... Adam Lambert is a talented kid and I get it that he brings Queen an expanded audience. But based on what I saw here I have no reason to doubt that this singer is just as good on everything else. So... musically I think he's a way better fit than Lambert, closer in age to the other guys and probably bring a bit more soul and wisdom.
All true. Follow Marc Martel on his channel. You can't see it in this video, but he plays piano better than Freddie, and guitar almost as well as Brian May. He has written a lot of great tunes and his solo album, Impersonator, is an unknown gem. The drummer in this video to over Roger Taylor's son's place in the live Queen+ tours the past few years.
So well done! Queen was the #1 "regret I never saw them live" band of my youth. A Night At The Opera was the first vinyl record I bought with my own money as a kid.... still a favorite and this tune a rare gem that I seldom hear anywhere but my own turntable. Maybe I'll hop across the pond to catch TQE over there in Great Britain, mate! Rock on!
Marc is now touring with his own band One Vision of Queen and they are based in the US, though they do tour internationally. I've seen him a few times and he always blows me away.
Holy shit he sung the hell out of that... Freddie struggled singing this every single time he sang it live, often if not always lowering the key. I have loads of Queen bootlegs from ANATO tours and there isn't one comparable version to this. i love Freddie btw so no hate.
+Jester 501 Totally understand what your saying. Even singing lower keys and with vocal nodules holding him back, Freddie's intensity was incomparable. So not hate at all, just truth. But even Brian May recognized this as the greatest he'd ever hear, and I suppose that says it all.
That an artist has difficulty with a song doesn’t poorly color him; that he pushes on, works through or around his difficulty makes him someone to be respected.
Saw QE first tour in Houston. There were people from London sitting next to me who had seen Queen many times back in the day, .they were in tears at the glorious sound brought back live! Martel is fabulous. If you love original Queen.... you'll adore being surrounded by the beautiful sound. I won't go see Queen now unless Martel is with them. Ive honestly tried to appreciate Lambert and cant. No way. This is spectacular! Thank you for posting!!
Incandescent.... simply brilliant in every regard. This song was a huge part of my youth and Im re discovering it many decades later. You guys are fantastic. That was reverence. That was emotion. That was sheer power.
If you are interested in Queen covers, you could go to Marc's channel. He also has a lot of original music too. His band Downhere or his cd Impersonator!
1 - The Prophet's Song 2 - You Take My Breath Away 3 - Love Of My Life 4 - My Fairy King 5 - The March Of The Black queen 6 - Nevermore 7 - Bohemian Rhapsody 8 - Seven Seas Of Rhye
My favorite song live when Freddie did it. White Man and the Prophet song. Amazing. Marc was singing in parts of Bohemian Rhapsody movie. Not sure what parts
You touched what is to me the ONE Queen song (Bo. Rhap. aside) that no-one (and I mean NO-ONE!) should ever dare to touch - and you bloody killed it! WTG, guys!
Roger Taylor has now said QuEx performs Queen better and more precisely than Queen. Now, granted without the charisma of Freddie or the improvisations of the others, but that is not what they are told to do. Thankfully so. I'd hate to see Martel dressing like Freddie like other cheap cover artists. Just do the music the best it can be done... that is the real homage.
They did a few of the vocal echoes with Freddie ad-libbing, but you are right. They never tried to deliver an album perfect version like this. You won't find more than a few pieces of this song done by Queen on RU-vid. Now, without Freddie, they have no hope of ever even trying.
Freddie never tried to deliver an "album perfect" edition of anything . Music is about passion and emotion, not perfection, at least not duing a live performance. Perfection only exists in the studio. A concert is not a live rendition of our album. It's a theatrica! event. Freddie Mercury I have fun with my clothes onstage; it's not a concert you're seeing, it's a fashion show. Freddie Mercury That's just another reason why Adam is the chosen one and perfect fit. Brian May has teased that they may add some surprises in 2017...anything is possible.
slynnc kitty Only a person who has no affiliation with music can say that "music is about passion and emotion, not perfection, at least not during a live performance." You are the one who screams that Martel's Hornets performance was a disgrace. According to your statement that I just quoted, Marc's performance was amazing since it had plenty of emotion and passion and lacked perfection. But it was in a live setting. So why are you so eager to bring it as an example of Marc's immeasurable failure if perfection in a live performance doesn't matter?" Double standards? Ask any musician, perfection in terms of technique and execution matters. With Freddie it didn't because Freddie was a huge star. Every time Adam goes flat, it doesn't matter how much passion and whatever else you say he has, it plain sucks to listen to. Stop talking about music like you actually know what you talking about. Let me quote you for you, "Stating your opinions as facts", Kitty?
M3 m3 m3 So you'd be okay with someone singing nonsense words with no meaning, passion or emotion as long as they sang it perfectly? ROTFLMAO You don't know all that you think you know. Oh, and it's not that Marc's performance at the Hornet's game was imperfect...he screwed it up big time...total mess up. More than and opinion, a fact: Music: an art of sound in time that expresses ideas and emotions in significant forms through the elements of rhythm, melody, harmony, and color.
Oh-oh, people of the earth "Listen to the warning, " the seer he said Beware the storm that gathers here Listen to the wise man I dreamed I saw on a moonlit stair Spreading his hand on the multitude there A man who cried for a love gone stale And ice-cold hearts of charity bare I watched as fear took the old man's gaze Hopes of the young in troubled graves "I see no day, " I heard him say So grey is the face of every mortal Ah-ah, people of the earth "Listen to the warning, " the prophet he said For soon the cold of night will fall Summoned by your own hand Ah-ah, children of the land Quicken to the new life, take my hand Fly and find the new green bough Return like the white dove He told of death as a bone white haze Taking the lost and the unloved babe Late too late, all the wretches run These kings of beasts now counting their days From mother's love is the son estranged Married his own, his precious gain The earth will shake, in two will break And death all round will be your dowry Ah-ah, people of the earth "Listen to the warning, " the seer he said For those who hear and mark my words Listen to the good plan Ah-ah-ah-ah And two by two, my human zoo They'll be running for to come Running for to come out of the rain Oh, flee for your life Who heed me not let all your treasure make you Oh, fear for your life Deceive you not, the fires of hell will take you Should death await you Ah-ah, people can you hear me? Probably better then Queen themselves ever performed this monumental song live... So good that more and more real good coverbands keep good music alive. Thank You!
Brian May agrees with you. After hearing this song live in London, he said he would never again hear the Prophet's Song performed to that degree of excellence.
THIS is my favorite non-"hit" Queen song, and I would venture to say that THIS is the best this song has EVER been performed live by ANY band, period. - Freddy was the King (Queen?), but live he only ever improvised and interpreted the recorded version that I fell in love with all those years ago. Their live performances of it were very special, like all Queen's live performances, but this is a particularly special song to me that brings back very intense memories of friends that I hung out with in college, partying and grooving on this song. - So, to see and hear this rendition, so faithful to the original, performed live like this _really_ touches my soul. - Thank you Marc & TQE for sharing your extremely special gifts here!
Queen still offers Queen Extravaganza's live concert at London Hammersmith for sale. It is a double cd with the first being A Night At The Opera from beginning to end performed flawlessly, then the second cd is the greatest hits of Queen. You would be HARD pressed to tell the difference from Queen except the recording quality is better BY FAR than all the old Queen live albums. AND Roger Taylor himself says that QUEX plays the music better and more perfectly than Queen ever did. So, you are in good company. Freddie truly is irreplaceable as a performer, but Martel's voice does what many thought could never be done, a close approximation of Freddie. I love their work, and hope they will someday return to the USA after having toured England 3 times, Australia and Europe for the past 4 years. Until then, look for Martel's Ultimate Queen Celebration, they have been doing limited touring in the USA and have a rumored Australia tour coming soon.
@@ToddandRaquiForrest Yeah an approximation but what happens is they simply try to much to imitate Freddie Mercury. Not to mention his voice is not pleasurable. Mercury's had a style and a passion in it, Martel id just a fat man moving around and making an over the top effort to replicate the old. Not to mention he does not come close to Freddie when it comes to strong parts of the song. He would never reach anything alone if he did not copy Queen.
@@Narpets2112 I don't really hate him, I just hate the useless fans of his who praise him like a god. I mean he found a good way to make money, why would I hate him for that? I hate some people who take it to the other side though. And I get in his videos to trash them
