Am I the only one who smiles foolishly at Mary's words of "I won't answer unless you kneel down and everything?" And the look Matthew gives her and then sighs a bit, where his looks say "For you, I'll do everything" and then makes one of the sweetest proposals ever! I looooove Matthew and Mary together!
If Downton had ended after this episode, it would have been the most critically acclaimed series of all time! This beautiful scene is the climax of the whole series, and still brings a tear to my eye :')
Couldn't agree more! They should have ended with this episode and did a special or even a movie with the wedding and fast forward to a baby. The circle ended with Mary and Matthew's wedding. For me they lost the show after that
The season 3 Christmas Special is probably the most powerful episode I've ever seen in any show. If it hadn't been for matthew and mary's will they/won't they relationship I might not have watched all the seasons. I have watched all six, but it just wasn't the same after season 3. Season 2 is still the best one, though. Having WWI as a backdrop worked wonders for the show and created a lot of drama, something that none of the other seasons had.
Omg had to rewatch this scene, why did Matthew have to die..and when that beautiful piece of music starts, omg my heart, he loved her sooo much...this scene was truely truely magical..what a masterpiece!
He brought out the best in Mary, and would have been such a wonderful ally for Edith! I wish we could have a "choose your own adventure" Downton where two different outcomes, one with Matthew and one with all of "Mary's men" culminating in Henry Talbot, were filmed in their entirety and viewers could choose which to watch.
It's such a beautiful scene to watch, but there is romance everywhere you can see. People holding hands and people dressing up to go out is romantic. As a writer I hope to be able to write things as beautiful as this show does. It's sad that he did die, but when you saw how well suited they were you couldn't see them be divorced or cheat on each other or anything, him leaving the show (not renewing his contract) meant they had to kill him off. It's just sad that someone would want to leave a show that got them their big break. :(
Carey Coleman I agree, I know this reply is late but I seem to be the only person who cares that he left the show when Matthew finally seemed to be getting the life he desired, I felt like he didn't care enough about the fans, the show and most of all the character, I feel Matthew deserved more than that
Actually Dan was really tired of doing the same Brit character over and over again. He wanted to do more ( and he did after he left he went on to Brodway and to loose weight to do a psyco killer) but it's clear to me after seeing a lot of interviews, that he did not wanted Matthew to did. Saw one interview where he said he was extremely choked when he read it. I suppose he thought they would think of something to keep him apart and then bring him back to the finale. He seemed really opened to be persuaded to make special appearances and return in the end. So my saying? They were to radical about it.
They could not necessarily divorce them or do a cheating plot. Matthew could be needed in London. In America someplace else!! He could suffer an accident and be in a coma. ( and I think that is rad) . Truth is Downton is linger now. It should have ended long time !
After series 5 I agree. The 6th series was unnatural and disjointed with the developments and the rush to ends. If they would have had ended in two seasons they could have achieved a better end with consistant plot wiritng. Great dialogue does not ever excuse poor plots.
The writer and producers made a huge mistake by creating the flawless character like Matthew, without being certain that Dan Stevens would play the role until the end of the show. It was extremely unfair to the fans, as no one managed to fill his shoes, so it lost its thrill after 3rd season. I still gave it a chance, watched till the end, but 4-6 seasons were utterly disappointing. It’s just unbelievable that Mary who has experienced great love with Matthew, would get seriously involved with that superficial car racer. I understand how hard it was to fill the void left by Matthew’s death, but Mary didn’t have to find a new love interest. She could have become a strong, independent woman and cherish the memories she had with Matthew. I had a feeling that the writer didn’t want the show to become too tragic, so he almost ignored the mourning process that follows the death of the loved one. I know they portrayed Isobel Crawly as a strong woman who didn’t show her feelings, however it’s so odd how she almost never mentions him and is just cheerful most of the time. In the end it could have been a great show, had it ended with Dan Stevens’ departure from the show. This way they wouldn’t have to kill him off and Mary and Matthew could have been given the happy ending the fans deserved.
@@copperredable but he is a man. He should be a gentleman and give her his jacket even if he was cold too. Look, she is wearing a dress with off-the-shoulder; and he in a jacket, waistcoats and shirt
SPOILER 3rd season I just watched Matthew die. And because I'm stupid as fuck, here I am. I should rest before I do this to myself... I'm literally crying
Please let there be a season 3. And if so Dan Stevens better still be in it. Once I take a liking to a actor I become very stubborn and won't except a different actor.
SPOILERS AHEAD!! I saw Sybil just die and I had to go back to this to feel happy again... (I know there is more sadness to come so I won't read any of your answers to avoid spoilers)
No chemistry they trie to make this scene look like cliche proprosal in snow with mathew being awesome and this stupid actress trying too hard to act posh with fake voice. Hope they had lil chemistry
