The only thing I don't like i. tomica, are the wheels in their basic Cars lineup, when I buy Tomica, I wheel swap them, I have some videos of it on my Amateur RU-vid channel.
The only downside of tomica in my opinion is the price of it and the wheels. In singapore i feel that the price of tomica are getting higher and higher. And singapore doesnt really get the exclusive
@@marcuz_tay I don't like the mainline. I like the Premium and Limited Vintage. The Premium's prices are reasonable from my supplier. The Limited Vintage can be really expensive.
@@marcuz_tay price yes I agree. Fast depends on releases some are a tad slower. Exclusives yes agree but we have Asia exclusive as well i see that coming more often cheers
@@traviswalker8933 for me i like the mainline becuz of the details, lets be honest they are better than hotwheels in terms of details. But for me the price is the main problem as it kinda not worth the price like uk thr wheels are the same and whatnot
More of this types of review. I would really like to find out more about the "first color variants" like how limited are they and how valuable they can get
That’s interesting. Value wise I’m not v sure as I don’t really sell only buy but yes it’s a discussion point. First color is a one time run for Japan market and Asia market separately. How many in quantity is a mystery
It is very difficult to find Tomica in the United States. The ones that I have were all shipped from Japan or China. Most of my collection comes from Hot Wheels Premium.
Great honest video; I rarely buy TLV now since more than half of mine had paint problems from new. They'e just too overpriced and really aren't collectible if they look bad in 2 years. My money goes to Konami, Kyosho, Inno, MiniGT, Tarmac, etc. which either have better details and hopefully better paint in the future. Old Kyoshos have paint problems but cost 1/2 to 1/4 the price of a TLV. I think mainline Hot Wheels look better than the red Tomicas and are much cheaper. Hopefully someone from TLV reads these comments because they really need to do a better job or reduce their prices in half. $50+ for a TLV Ferrari is straight up robbery.
Collecting tomica is addictive. Once I get one I feel I need to get more to showcase😅 recently just 'upgraded' to collect tlvn, but price is a major set back for most collector I would say. Wish tomica to reduce price to introduce more collectors. Cheers.
I don't like tomica headlights, some of them are just painted grey, and the plastic headlights looks like it has eyes lol I don't really mind the wheels, but it would be nice to have more realistic wheels And another thing I hate is the cars has no side mirrors, all of mini GT, tarmac works and even some HotWheels have it,but just tomica don't have them Some tlv has side mirrors, but you have to install them yourself Tomica prices are so expensive!tlv has amazing details, but the price of 1 tlv car,I can probably get 2 mini GT cars that is as detailed (I gotta admit, tomica suspensions is just the best thing in the world!)
Hi for Tomica I agree I wish they had side mirrors as such but they have features like opening doors and suspension as well. For TLV it’s in a diff category agree with u on some. I will do one pros and cons on TLV next .
It’s annoying but at the same time I think it is quite understandable since their market is mainly young children eg 3 years old at the youngest, so they don’t want protrusions that could cause harm. But yeah, I agree, would be great if they had them
Started collecting Tomica in 1976 when they were sold as "Pocket Cars. I wrote to the distributor in California and was able to order all that I needed for a 1 each. Still collecting Tomica 45 years later.
You dont need to store them in tea bag to prevent paint rash. Simply clean them well, dry them then lightly polish and finally apply pro grade auto ceramic coating or sealant. One or 7 years later (depend on the chemical you use), repeat. I cant understand people who put their models on the bags or boxes. I want to touch them, play with them regularly. Since I apply paint protection process, I never have any paint problem anymore. If you really are collector, you must know and do the best to protect them without throwing them into lifeless boxes.
The ever rising 2nd hand market supports the 1st hand market, and the normal red box line entry level welcomed by new comers, so more n more collectors to join the Tomica family. Of course the product variety , special / limited editions and the signature gimmicks inherited since 1970 making the series more fascinating ~ Nice video , lovely to see more like this from your channel!
In the Philippines its so easy to find Tomica like everytime I go to mall I would buy one. But when we move to America it's so hard to find one you could only find Tomica in online or Japanese store.
Great video 😀 I'm from Finland and Tomicas isn't sold in here anymore. I lived near one shop which sold some Tomicas at 90's, those were packaged as that Mazda Savana in this video, can't remember what cars were available, but i bought green Jaguar XJS, red Porsche 928 and an white 80's Mercedes S-class. I still have those in great condition and some others too i have found. Last Tomica i have purchased is old worn out Toyota Celica XX or Celica MK2, found that from Finnish auction site. Almost Always when you find some Tomicas from Finland prices are pretty high, no matter is it old or new or where it's made or what brand or type car it is...
Thanks for sharing! sadly Tomica i guess is currently available at Asia markets for Europe they once bring in in the 80s for the foreign series. Those you find are extremely collectible esp the Porsche and Mercedes. Congrats!!
Hi, Im from Czech Republic...Tomica leave this market in 2014, but they are selling here only Tomica Hypercity playlets, not those premium or basic car models :)
I am a massive Honda fan, and I have a nice collection of Tomica, including two ancient relics - a 1300 Coupe 9, and a red Honda F1. Regarding the mainline wheels, they're fine as long as they match the casting. There was a period in the late 90's where that wasn't done well, though. For instance, they would sonetimes put the fat wheels on S2000s where they would extend way past the casting, and they would put the skinny wheels on mainline Skyline GT-Rs, leaving a lot of dead space in the wheelwells.
Let's be honest, there's no downsides to collecting Tomica right?? XD. But I do find it much more relaxing than Hotwheels. Glad someone made this video!
Started collecting 2 years ago, had 200+ tomicas, most of it was new releases I love the wheels, i get that some castings doesnt fit it and generally collectors who chase for realism hates them and wheelswaps it anyway, which is painful tbh But recently the quality isnt the best, thats why i switched to made in japan era tomicas, 80-90s releases Very expensive but japan made tomicas are nicer than both china and vietnam ones TLV and TLVNs are nice, but nothing beats the sharp paint, chrome, and castings of japan made tomicas As of now, i have 16 made in japan tomicas, had to sacrifice most of my cars but i can still buy em off the store if i wanted to
Hi Hot Kustoms cheers from the Philippines! Just discovered your channel after started collecting Tomica Premiums I have about half of the total 97 collection (not counting the other color variants or exclusives). Not sure if you will see this but do you have an advice to prevent paint rash while its displayed? Since I plan to display them permanently and look at. Is it better to have a silica gel hidden inside the display? Is it better to leave them in the open? What are your thoughts I am a bit afraid of the paint rash or worst the paint bubbles. I have some old release sealed ones that have paint rashes already due to the age or maybe how its stored.
And thats the charm of tomicas, they didnt changed their wheels ever since the 70s I hope they still continue this in the future, the button wheels IS part of tomica and tomica's identity
To be honest, I dont care they are Tomica or not, I only care about the car. The wheels of Tomica Basic look absolutely horrible! They just do that because of the cost. Dont say their weakness like their intention to be unique. It is not.
ah didn't realise premiums also suffer from paintrash. Fortunately with my collection my TLVs have very minimal paintrash (alot were bought 2nd hand from Japan) however i'm thinking the paint rash issue would be more worse in more humid countries. Here in australia its not really humid just more hot and dry @Hot Kustoms wondering with your experience is paint rash worse when you store in the box or display?
Valid! I have been collecting Tomica when I was little. I am very lucky to be in part of a loving family whereas my Mother support my hobby! What make Tomica stands out the most is the array of selection from their brands. From Commercial Vehicles to Sport Car, they have got it all! My personal favorite will always be "Everyday-Car", those are the most unique to me, and no other brand could quite match Tomica in that respected spectrum of Toy Cars.(Perhaps MatchBox) Regards David.
The Tomicas from decades ago before the 2000s were heaby and very durable. For their proce now , of even the regular models I am not satisfied with the proportions, details and paint defects. Before I buy a Tomica car I research how it looks or open it if it is not sealed. I found a nice WRX STI in display and asked the merchandiser if they could find the price. After 40 minutes they came back with an open box and used the display model. I paid in full price. It was the only premium WRX STI in stock. I kind of regretted it at first but like the car overall. Scalpers gouge the price hard on popular vehicle makes and models even on the new regualr lines.
Tomica is quite a fun and vast brand, really enjoy the Tomica Premium branching, i like the Tomica Event Models especially when they always will bring back some popular JDMs like the police FD3S, Toyota MR2 with black bonnet or something European like the Lamborghini Murcielago. The Tomica Limited series was also pretty cool and decently priced for its quality and looks. Dream Tomica is sort of like Hot Wheels' version of fantasy casting wonderland, many movie cars, show cars, etc appear in there for the kids and collectors. For TLV and TLVN, pricings though are pretty high, some are still low on value and have proven price does not determine their build quality. I personally have about 30-40 mainline/TEM models, 38 Tomica Premiums and about 10 Tomica Limited models.
I have a few Tomica cars, I just get it if I go to Asia, as my wife is Asian. But here in Europe it's hard to find them, unlike Hot Wheels or Matchbox that are in every toy store.
As a US Tomica fan, since TLVs aren’t sold here, I have to import them from Japan, China etc. and a lot of the time I have to pray that they make it over here. Last year, I ordered a Red TLV Honda Integra from an Ebay seller in China and, 1 year later, it didn’t arrive.
Wow.. I envy you. I have imported several cars from Die-cast Wholesale which is based in US. (Am from Singapore) The delivery fee quite expensive but is well packed. Besides Tomica I collect 1:18 Auto Art as well..
OMG sad to hear that you need to report or open case if the item never arrived within your protection period. Keep collecting and happy hunting. Cheers.
@@HotKustoms few tlvns have, majority of tomica premiums, few tomia limited(mostly the plain ones), few mainlines as well. Sri lanka is also a humid country, after I see your video I use silica gel, and planning to get a tamiya model wax for future cars
Honestly, Tomica has no con. They are around $5 US dollars for the red/white box. I think 5 dollars for a stock diecast car is a good deal from a company in Japan. The only con is the marked-up $50-$80 Tomica like 22b and some Initial D, like the Blue Skyline in this video. If you want an even more premium diecast then you probably want to collect the vintage which is like 20 dollars retail, but I do not think they make new cars for vintage.
Im really hughe fan of TLV(N) models, I'm collecting mainly Honda and Datsun cars from TLV. Can I ask it is true they do models base on scanned original car in studio? I mean to make it as realistic as is possible?
@@HotKustoms I remember when I was young in late 70’s we had TOMY Pocket Cars that were like mainlines and they were available but I never see Tomica in my area anymore.
i only have few tomica premium and tomica limited vintage, both have paint rash/bubble issue after +/- 4 months out from the sealed box. discuss it with some collector before and i think it's a common issue on every japanese brand. but with tomica price tag it is too expensive for it durability compare to my $1 diecast (toys grade) and $10 mini scale from another brand. for me at that price tag it should get more than just details on it casting. btw do you know how to fix the paint rash/bubble issue without repaint it?
It is especially true. The TLV paint is v thin and made in China castings for Tomica seems to have this problem. Yes i do have a video on this check out my playlist under vlog. Cheers
I like this brand better I actually got recommended after watching a video about hot wheels diecast cars and now I’m really interested in Tomica Cars😃😊
You didn’t mention Tomica Limited Vintage Neo. They’ve introduced some nice Ferrari casts recently. They are on the expensive side, but are worth it IMO.
I agree on everything that you have said, hahahaha. Especially about the paints and chrome loss of the cars. However those wheels, it’s not an issue for me because it gives a stock look the cars, unlike for the HW, GL, JL, TW, MG, etc. they often look modified so I like it hehehe. Recently I’m more inclined now on collecting Mini GTs and TLVNs, personally I’ve grown tired of HW because of the way they release their premiums, too much F&F, way off scale that makes my TLVNs and M2 look so small. Also the rarity of their regular cars, particularly the recent releases is a bit disappointing, even the Honda Prelude, I can’t even find one in stores. However there’s MBX, but they are so few despite showing a lot of models on their IG account. Still, even though TLVNs are pricey they are so worth it. The price justifies the cars or sets. So any new collectors here planning to try tomica, try looking for their Ferrari releases and at least one of their tomicarama sets. They’re so worth it.
I learn a few bits of information I did not know, but I always learn something new about diecast everyday, I quite like the wheels Tomica do,but I tend to buy the premium more and they have custom wheels, but I can see how the more fussy collectors get upset about it, as you say its just the way they do it, there is always going to be something you dont like, as they cant please everyone. good video, thanks.
Do you have any idea how to get away paint rashes before comes in on tomica? I had few tomica cars started to have paint rashes i tried put them different safe thing? like a bag or something but it still getting paint rash
I just pre ordered my very first Tomica models from hobby link japan.I ordered the Vintage Porsche 911 in yellow and maroon. I can't wait to get them. Great job on the video.
do you sometime go flee marcket shoping for your collection ? if yes it might mean you could make a new categorie of content :diecast hunting brind a frontal camera and mount it on your head and record what you find for us ^^
YEs i do only in Japan. As I'm located in Singapore we dont have such market. And in Japan best is shoot in stealth especially in store. Flea such as this wonderland happen a few times per year this is my only flea experience. Intended one for last year but cancelled thanks to covid
Hmm I agree with the paint rash problem. One of my tlv Rx-7 has paint rash all over the body. Luckily I was able to polish most of it out but there’s still some left. One of my Redbox Mazda atenza also has paint rash but it’s not as bad as the other one. A real shame for such good models.
Problem is these are not available everywhere like in india they’re not possible and prices are crazy high . As a kid I had many of these which were affordable .
Thanks for sharing sadly Tomica is available only in certain parts of Asia and USA. Interesting that you have them as kid. It will be nice if you still have them.
@@HotKustoms yeah I still have them. They used to come in before via some imports like if someone travelled bought and then brought them to India and then sold them . But now hardly happens . I have all of them except a few which sadly were stolen . 😞
I like Tomica, especially it's Limited Vintage Neo range, but these are priced way too high IMO compared to MINI GT, which has nearly similar details & quality.
I'd like to see Tomy making more modern cars in the Premium range. About 80% of the released Premium models are from the last century...which is a bit too much.
Prefer old ones than of this century.... 70s 80s and 90s jdm are my preference and most them are on expensive tlvns. Wish tomica will release them in premium line and stop doing lambo and ferrari in this line and put them in tlvn
I think Tomica is awesome, here in South America Tomica is rare to find. I found Tomica more detailed than Hot wheels, probably hot wheels reach a better quality on paint and axles, but Tomica is more detailed and innovative, I love cristal clear headlights, and I don't care about rubber tires. Tomica mainline has some awesome castings but we have to understand that those are created mainly for kids (i doesn't mean we can´t collect them, admire them). Tomica premium is more interesting and still has a good price. TLV is amazing but expensive, however, I understand it worth the money. Mattel has a lot to learn, especially on detailing and innovation. btw I would like to see more 1/64 on Tomica premium, sometimes it goes under 1/60.
Thank you so much for this video! I wished it was longer 😂 It is very helpful because there are a few castings I am interested in but the wheels are a turnoff
I hate the fact that Tomica does not include side mirrors in most of their castings. When manufacturers like Hot Wheels, Mini GT, Tarmac Works, Inno64 etc. can include them, why not Tomica? This to me is very offsetting. I only collect Tomica's which comes with side mirrors in their castings for that matter. Lack of side mirrors spoil the scale details of their cars.
