What are the pros & cons of traditional publishing? I'm sharing some of the big ones, so if you're considering whether or not to traditionally publish, or are just curious, this is the video for you!
This is not an exhaustive list, and it's not prescriptive, either! The conclusion isn't that traditional publishing is better than self-publishing, but that these are specific pros and cons to bear in mind if you are considering traditional publishing.
One con that is pretty major that I forgot to include: it's definitely a con that the traditional publishing industry is very market & trend driven. This can shut out specific types of books for long periods of time. This is why certain genres simply fit self-publishing much better (and vice versa though--not all genres do well in self-pub!).

I've been going back and forth thinking about self-publishing vs traditional publishing and this gave me a lot of insight to work with. Thank you!

Do you have a clearer idea? I had watched her video on the process for traditional publishing and was sold on it, but then I watched this one and it is a more realistic approach.

Thank you for your overview! I want to be traditionally published for all of the reasons you mention. Some people are meant for self-publishing. Some people are not. I'm one of those who is not cut for self-publishing. I'm going to follow the path of my favorite authors.

Your videos are invaluable! Thank you for making them! Could you make a video on how to connect and make friends with other authors going on the same journey as yourself? Also, would you consider doing a video on the best book events to attend and consider after publishing?

I was keen on self publishing, but then I heard how hard it is so I decided to traditionally publish. But then I heard how hard that one is. So now I'm not sure why I even want to be an author. I literally dont know anybody who wants to he one. I dont really have any friends because I'm an introvert and nobody I know, at least in my family is into this stuff so I really feel alone.

This was really well rounded and informative! As usual 😊 I think all the pros you mentioned are reasons enough for me to want to go the traditional route. My current story idea is a zombie book though and it might now be great for the market right now, but who knows how long it will take me to write (first manuscript ever!) so we’ll see how it goes in the long run!

Cool video. I don't have enough experience to even have an opinion on this but, I can't imagine someone finding the time to not only write a great book, but then successfully marketing and distributing it? I would think that if the quality is there, over time, word of mouth is what makes it happen. I think I asked this already, but before sending a manuscript to agents, how does one know they won't get ripped off? I hate to sound so cynical but ...?

That's so funny as you were saying, "And you have to revise it..." and I mumbled, "which you should be doing... anyway!" and you said it too. JINX! I want a rootbeer float! And ahahahaha "And you can't control everything..." 14:39 Kitty says "Yup, not even me! Muahahaha, where's mah tuna?" Third thought as I'm wrapping up at work... Con game, watch the queen, bet two dollars, be she mean? OH! That's a jack friend, double or nothing? Come on chief, you got good eyes, better than my hands right?

You can alleviate some of the cons of self-publishing by establishing a publishing company. I publish my own books, and other authors books. Not only does it allow me an outlet for my own books, but it allows me to make money and make it a job by publishing other authors as well. I guess though for this method to work, you need to become a FULL TIME publisher and manager and a PART-TIME writer, so it depends on what your goals are. I will say though: Few authors receive anything close to $50k as an advance. I don't even think JK Rowling got that. Yes, it CAN happen - but most authors I have talked to who went traditional received anywhere from $0 advance from small presses up to $5,000 from Scholastic - I made more than $5,000 on my first novel I self-published.

Great video as usual! :) Question: do you still own the rights to your characters when you traditionally publish? For example, say you wanted to post little stories about Stella's life before boarding the Rochester on your website and let's say your website generates ad income for you, are you allowed to do that on your own or does the publisher own your characters now?
@AlexaDonne
@AlexaDonne 6 лет назад
Yep, the characters are mine, though there's probably some language in my contract about related works that I'd have to check. I'd definitely check with my publisher before doing anything, as a courtesy.

do you have tips for someone thinking of writing a cookbook? what are the pros and cons and is it worth the trouble?
@AkiShiroi
@AkiShiroi 5 лет назад
Agents don't exist in many countries, but even if you self-publish, you'll probably end up paying 15% or more to many people whose help you'll need (even Facebook or Google Ads) So maybe that "15%" sounds way worse than what it is when compared to other options.

Literary will always struggle in self-pub (the audience for literary fiction is smaller, period, and traditional publishers are just so good at getting it out there). Also a lot of YA just doesn't do well in self-publishing because the vast majority of YA readers a) prefer hard copies to digital and b) still browse at traditional bookstores. Discoverability is so much harder. THAT SAID, the type of YA that does so well in self-pub is the kind that covers the tropes that the traditional publishers refuse to publish anymore--paranormal, urban fantasy, dystopian. Many readers still want them, so many self-pub authors have done very well with them. And then middle grade/children's books are going to be a lot harder to do in self-pub as well because most parents (who buy the books) buy them in physical copies and buy them at bookstores and/or libraries. Going in the opposite direction, urban fantasy, sci-fi, thrillers, romance (including and especially erotica), and "new adult" (sub-category of romance as well) do very very very well in self-pub.

About the cover, i really have no problem But will they really change your story? Like what if they read it and feel its hood as it is and it does not need major changes? Is that also possible or will they always make you change your story?

Alexa, when you say let go of your story, do you mean the Pub Co. will change the entire story?

i have self published twice, but interested in traditional publishing. a lot of literary agents are picky. i've been tempted to form my own literary agents. to me i think new authors with lots of potential should get chances to be known. i heard jk rowling started as self published as an author with depression disorder. i got my depression disorder from my army service. i continue to practise my drawing and writing skills. who is your agent, your publisher, and are you interested in getting yuor books made into tv/movies? hope you have a good day my sister author. :)

Good day! I know this video is super old but i will still ask. I'm a soon to be 15 year old who has currently written two volumes of a book series i hope to publish (each volume is 5 chapters around 300ish pages) and i had two questions: Is it harder to publish Light novels such as this one? And will my age be an issue in the publishing process? (Note: I am aware that my writing isn't the best but i really want to learn the process of publishing for the future) Thank you in advanced and i hope you have a great day!

Hi Alexa, I've been leaning more towards traditional publishing for a long time, and your video really reaffirmed that when I watched it a while ago. Something has recently caught my attention (again), specifically regarding trying to debut with a first book in a series. I know that it's going to harder during both the query and submission process, which I can accept. But I also heard that there's also a risk of ending up in a limbo after your first book is published but not doing well enough. Is this an avoidable risk, that is, if you have a good agent then they will be able to negotiate the initial contract to ensure this does not happen? If not, do you think it may be worth it to put a series I'm currently passionate about on the back burner to write a stand-alone to query with first?
@AlexaDonne
@AlexaDonne 6 лет назад
If you have a book that must be part of a series, ideally your agent gets you at least a 2-book deal... it's harder to get more than 2 books in a deal. I've rarely seen the 2nd book in a 2-book deal cancelled for sales reasons, but yes it is possible that if you sell something as a 1-book deal that if it doesn't sell well the publisher won't buy more... but if your book is a series, your agent would work hard to sell it as such. I would query whatever your strongest project is, whether that is a series or a standalone.

the cons, is that once you are signed by a traditional publishing company you practically lose control over your book, and another con is the money aspect, let say your book sold 2 million copies, more than half of that money goes to the traditional publishing company instead of you, yeah, its better to do hybrid publishing, which mean doing both traditional and self-publishing, there are a lot of big names authors in the literary world that do hybrid publishing.
@Gaywatch
@Gaywatch Год назад
You don't lose creative control over you work, that's a myth. And if you sell 2mil copies your royalties will still bring in a LOT of money, you career has shot off like a rocket, and your next advance will almost certainly be hefty. 'But you could have even MORE!' Man, in this scenario I'm likely pulling six figures and shopping around for a movie deal. I'm doing GREAT.

How much did you make on your books? Have you profited? Broke even? I'm wondering because I get the feeling that you have to pay publishers to get your book published. Is that true?
@AlexaDonne
@AlexaDonne 3 года назад
I mean there is no break even for me b/c I didn't spend anything. I get an advance from my publisher and the money is mine. In legit, trad pub you NEVER pay your publisher any monies. Money always flows to the author.
@mattmallecoccio8378
@mattmallecoccio8378 3 года назад

Wow... hardly any views. I'm watching and I'm not even from the US. So I won't be surprised if some things aren't relevant... About the cons of hardly zero control. I wonder if there's a really a reason for not taking without talking at least with the author. At the end of the day, as I'm not sure how many I am about to get one way or another... I think trying to work with traditional publishing may be good for me. The biggest con for me is... that I write fantasy drama, and where I live, this genre just doesn't work where I live. And as I can't do traditional marketing in another country... Bye bye dream. So... I'll guess I'll go with watppad (Very optimistic, ha?)
