The Psychedelic Masterpiece You May Have Never Heard | The Outsiders - CQ

The history of rock and roll is filled with albums that didn’t do well when they originally released but later became cult classics. Bands like the Velvet Underground or the Stooges are good examples of that. And many 60s garage bands that were featured on compilations such as "Nuggets", "Pebbles" or "Back from the Grave", are also good examples of that phenomenon. But there are still many albums from the 60s that have never gotten the recognition they deserve. "CQ" by The Outsiders, a psychedelic masterpiece from 1968, is one of those records. The album has been reissued a few times over the years and the album has become a cult classic among many enthusiasts of psychedelia from the 60s. But this album still remains fairly known to many music lovers around the world. In this video, were going to take a look at the history of The Outsiders, and the history of this psychedelic gem called "CQ".

My dad was friends with Wally at the time. He was a wild guy who lost it later in life to dope and booze. Occasionally he would visit us and i found him pretty dense and daunting. But the Outsiders were one of the best bands to come from my home country

I explained in my comment that for the sake of their completists, they had two double CDs in Holland on the Pseudonym label, Think About Today - Their Complete Works, which contained their complete previously released tracks in Holland, and Everything On Earth, containing their entire previously unreleased tracks from 1966-1968, plus outtakes from their CQ album, their complete live concert, some of which occupied side one of their first album, but those tracks appearing here without overdubbed additional live audience noise. You may be able to get them on imports, or as downloads. I only found the latter on RU-vid, better than nothing. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DoYs3ony4JI.html

I’m 73 and just discovered this today- WOW! I’m glad I did because these guys are incredible! Or were-still are on their recording- they must’ve influenced many other bands. This why I continue listening mostly to rock of the 60s and 70s - the music scene today seems so bland and derivative by comparison. Looking forward to digging into their catalog!

Great to see a video about a band from my home country! The Hague was a hotbed for the Dutch rock scene in the 60s and I grew up with a lot of music from that era through my dad who was a teen at the time. Lots of great bands from the time, I can recommend Q65 and Groep 1850 to anyone who’s into the outsiders as well.

Supersister was a few years later from the mid / late Nederbeat freakbeat sound as their 1st LP Wasn’t released until 1970 although still an amazing group! Honestly there’s tons of amazing Nederbeat / Nederpop / Netherlands garage punk / freakbeat / psychedelic rock / progressive rock groups from 1960’s to about mid 1970’s I could do a rundown of all the groups but this message would be ridiculously long… But in my opinion the greatest Netherlands groups from that time - Groep 1850 (aka Group 1850) & The Outsiders Some of European hot spots besides Netherlands 🇳🇱 for amazing beat, garage punk, freakbeat, mod, psychedelic rock, psychedelic pop, psychedelic folk, baroque pop, sunshine pop, acid rock, heavy psych, proto-prog, progressive rock, space rock, etc etc - Germany 🇩🇪 - Krautrock, Kosmische, Progressive Electronic, Berlin School Sweden 🇸🇪- Svensk beat, Swedish “progg” scene Denmark 🇩🇰- Danish beat, Danish heavy psych & prog France 🇫🇷- French chanson, French yéyé, French pop, French rock n roll, French beat, French progressive rock, Zeuhl, avant-prog Italy 🇮🇹 - Italian beat, Italian progressive rock “Rock Progressivo Italiano” There’s a ton of great stuff from Norway, Finland, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Switzerland, Poland, Czechia, Slovakia, Austria, Hungary, former Yugoslavia countries (Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Serbia, Kosovo, Vojvodina (Serbian autonomous province), Macedonia now known as North Macedonia), Greece, former USSR countries, etc Even countries such as Albania, Moldova, Romania, Bulgaria had some psych / prog groups - not so much in Albania & Moldova - but the latter countries had some great groups such as Transsylvania Phoenix, Sfinx, and Progressiv TM (band moniker inspired from Hungarian progressive rock group Locomotiv GT) from Romania & Shturcite & FSB from Bulgaria Luxembourg & even the European microstates had a tiny bit of psychedelic action… The AMAZING 1960’s European psychedelic scene truly comprised the entire continent!!

I was lucky enough to have been introduced to The Outsiders records as a young teenager in the 1980s and I still love them today. They were very influential on an American garage rock band called the Lyres (Jeff Connolly, he was also in DMZ) from the 1980s. Their first album On Fyre is amazing and shows just how much they were influenced by them. I remember seeing a video on RU-vid years ago of Jeff Connolly visiting Wally Tax's grave and another with Wally Tax from Dutch TV where he talks about only ever wearing pink socks and how much he hated paying tax. He was an interesting man. I'm really glad to have seen this, they deserve more exposure although part of me has enjoyed having them as a secret few knew about.

Thank you for this. I've loved the song "Touch" since first exposed to it a quarter century ago on the "Nuggets II" compilation. I'm going to look for "C.Q." and learn about the Nederbeat sound of mid- to late-'60s Amsterdam. So sorry to read about Wally Tax's tragically shortened life; apparently he never recovered from the death of his longtime romantic partner. He was the son of Nazi concentration camp survivors. Be sure I'll use my ignorance not as a source of complacency but as a spur. Again, thanks to YP for another illuminating and fascinating vid.

Very well-crafted docu about the Outsiders! Huge thanks for that Yesterday's Papers! Together with Q65, they were among the longest-haired groups in the still neatly raked Netherlands. Besides their great albums and singles, they were also very good live! Our neighbour attended an Outsiders concert in the East of the Netherlands as a teenage girl in the 60s. That was a real sensation! However, Wally Tax was as stoned as a monkey she told me 🙉. And not only Wally, the whole band seemed to be a big consumer of a native crop called Nederweed. That certainly contributed to the psychedelic qualities of their album CQ 😅! Unfortunately, only drummer Leendert "Buzz" Busch and Appie Rammers (bass) are still alive from the Outsiders. Oh yes, another little thing, Mr Rammers is not called Apple 🍎but Appie 😂. Very good job! Greetings! EJ

The Outsiders were live better than Q65. I liked the Livin' Blues well live as well, though the band was a mess, because of internal problems (and drugs and alcohol, I suppose). A nice band was The Bintangs. I didn't like BZN, though the group members were really nice. In the beginning it was a pop-band without a lady-singer.

@@elkiebeerepoot5829 Yes, you could be right about that, I dare not say. But their live recordings from Breda are blistering! Ah yes, good bands Livin' Blues and the Bintangs. Livin' Blues' 1970/71 song "Wang Dang Doodle" sounds like some kind of NederBeat Steppenwolf! Good that you also touch on BZN. Not exactly my taste but Volendam was also a hotspot of Nederbeat. As a veteran musician of that era, and a BIG fan of psychedelic music, here's my slant: What you're trying to peg as psychedelic is: which, even then, was more the roots of punk. You want to hear real psychedelic? Quicksilver, Grateful Dead circa '67-'71, early Mothers

But then ,everyone has their own idea about "psychedelic" , personally I find CQ has more in common with a somewhat depressing Joy Division. Tax was just as tortured a soul as Ian Curtis ; he himself would probably be the last to consider this "psychedelic" ,although he wouldn't mind if it earned him a bit of posthumous recognition. Soft Machine, early Floyd, Pretty Things ,Hendrix, Twink, Byrds, Love,Spirit is more my kind of "Psychedelia".

I love the way many albums that seemed to be failures and had no audience have been rediscovered gradually and found fans. These albums were usually worked on very hard and seriously and I hope some band members were around to enjoy a feeling of finally being appreciated.

Thanks for this. I always like to learn of new bands I've never heard of before, especially in the Psychedelic genre. I listened to "CQ" and I enjoyed it. You can hear the influences of Pink Floyd (C.Q.) and The Doors (Prison song). But I was struck by how much the vocals on some songs remind me of 68-71 era David Bowie. Not to compare. "CQ" stands on its own merits, deservedly so.

The musical cross influences of diverse bands like The Velvet Underground, David Bowie, Fairport Convention, Byrds, Pretty Things, San Francisco Bands and others are evident here. Admittedly, my access to the great groups via youtube and other sources is much greater now than back-in-the-day then. But it's remarkable that The Misfits were not more well-known. I will definitely check out their music further. Thanks for posting.

Thank you very much for creating this excellent mini-documentary about The Outsiders from Amsterdam. 🙂 I bought an original (and nearly mint) copy of C.Q. in the early 90s at a flea market here in Amsterdam for 15 guilders (= approx. 8 dollars), and it appears that my LP is now worth quite a bit more these days. ;-) In 1994 an excellent 2-CD set with 36 tracks was released on the Pseudonym label called "C.Q. Sessions" , and if you like this album it's definitely worth checking out this CD-set. I by the way saw Wally Tax quite a few times in the mid- and late 1990s in the eastern part of Amsterdam (he was living in a small apartment there), and unfortunately he wasn't doing too well health-wise and financially during the last part of his life (he passed away in 2005), and it was rather sad to see what had become of this very talented former Dutch teen idol from the 60s... Here's a nice documentary about Wally Tax & The Outsiders from 1998 (unfortunately only in Dutch): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7dKYX52zuFw.html

Beautifully done, great mix of sound and images. A great band. I was a little surprised you did not specifically refer to Wally Tax's wild harmonica playing, which gave a unique edge to many of their songs. The harmonica solo at the end of Daddy Died on Saturday, for example, pushes that song into another dimension.

I have 'Touch' and 'Keep On Trying' - haven't listened to them in decades but will do so after this. I got them during holidays in the Netherlands. At the time Golden Earrings were the #1 band (yes, the 's' was there at that time), with tracks including 'Baby If You Leave Me', 'In My House' and 'Sound of the Screaming Day' being big hits (all great tunes). Other top bands including Cuby & the Blizzards, Rob Hoek R&B Band, the Shoes and Sandy Coast. The Outsiders were rather rough sounding compared to the Earring, so it is understandable that Polydor would opt for the latter.

YP I loved this episode. I have been trying to find Dutch 60s music since hearing the Shocking Blue and Golden Earring(s) in the 60s. While I do like CQ, I do prefer the singles of the Outsiders. Universal put out a series "The Golden Age of Dutch Pop Music" which is/was a series of two CD compilations. The Outsiders package was titled "A & B Singles and More." There was also A Wally Tax issue and a Cuby and the Blizzards issue (Dutch blues and which did have a Philips US release on Philips) that I did not buy. But I did get the Motions (Robbie van Leeuwen's group before joining Shocking Blue), Golden Earrings, andAlquin. Not that I am saying that these issues are great, but I do enjoy them. Unfortunately the booklets are in Dutch! And this issue of YP has me scurrying to the CD racks to slap on some Dutch r & r. Multidinous thanks!

Maybe it's just me, but "Doctor" has a sorta "You Should Never Have Opened That Door" sound to it. I'm liking it. Also a sincere fuck Polydor. Every time I hear of them, they're dicking a band over. The Monks, and The Outsiders. The Monks would make for a great video topic. Great music, only released an album, bizarre story, and as alluded to, ended way too early. Thanks a lot, Polydor.

The Monks were certainly hard-core long before that term was applied to rock bands. They had their own look, and their own attitude. They were confrontational and didn't care if people were put off by it. The song "Complication" made almost everything Dylan and The Stones were doing at the time look like placating compromise by comparison.

Sounds wonderful. I’ll investigate further. I had purchased a cd in Oslo in 1997 of a Norwegian band known as the 1,2,6. The songs have a very similar sound to the Dutch sound. Some really fantastic stuff from that era out of Europe. Now, it’s like finding gold compared to the terrible nonsense that is popular today.

Undoubtedly the Dutch bands Outsiders and Q65 were the champions in long-hair fashion. They outgrew their role models (The Pretties) and potential US competitors (The Seeds and The Blues Magoos). Allegedly the original Keyboardist was included less for his musical chops but hair length. "Doctor" is such a killer track and it is really sad about the "Do You Feel Alright" single. Wally Tax in the 70ies was involved in mainstream pop like Champagne's "Rock'N'Roll Star" (a huge hit in Germany at least). ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-d7NzdzjCE78.html Since you are starting a series with forgotten psychedelic album gems, an episode on Groep/Group 1850's debut (along with all those awesome/adventurous singles) is inevitable I guess.

Now this was something. I like their sound. Are any of the band members still alive? Polygram could see the trends of the 1980s and beyond. Here in the States in the early 70s, there was a trend known as the Dutch Invasion with acts like The Shocking Blue, Mouth and MacNeil, Focus, Golden Earring, and much later Herman Brood who was of course one of rock's most tragic stories.
