For my part, I believe there are three very questionable conclusions in this interview: 1) "Sanctions don't work." Of course they work, they just need to be much harder and much more thorougly implemented (imagine having no sanctions on Russia, that would be completely insane!) 2) "The Russian economy has grown." If you believe statistics from Rosstat, then I guess you believe anything coming from Putin... (neutral observers in the West appear to be of diametrically opposing opinion) 3) "Putin's popularity has rebounded." The harder Putin oppresses the Russian people, the higher his popularity numbers will be in the "polls", because who in their right mind wants to draw negative attention to themselves by criticising the "great impeccable leader" (as I highly doubt that answers can be kept anonymous)

@karinlindblom2934 10 месяцев назад
Exactly. To say that the sanctions dosn't work is a very strange view. The RuZZian economy has more or less collapsed and they are living on their saved money. @osric1730
@osric1730 10 месяцев назад
It depends on what you mean by "don't work". If you mean they don't work as advertised then they clearly don't, if you believe they have no effect then you're equally divorced from reality. The Russian economy may not be as rosy as Russia likes to pretend, neither is it in danger of imminent collapse. The notion that Russia is full of people who hate Putin and are too afraid to say so is absolute nonsense. Putin does not have a vice like grip on public opinion and information like the Chinese have. The fact is that an easily sufficient number of Russians are very much in favour of "Making Russia Great Again" and have no problem with Russia's unreconstructed imperialism and nationalist mythology.

As these nearby states become more and more successful (Ukraine, Taiwan) the authoritarian regimes feel they need to destroy them as they provide a very real example of a better standard of living to their repressed peoples. The other cheap trick they use is constant propaganda that brainwashes their population a fantasy that they are under constant threat by the west and western aligns states, and that they need the despot to protect them. It's ironic, that if they only could travel that'd see that nobody western aligned much knows nor talks about them let alone is planning their demise or invasion. Since treatment is not the goal, which brings all sorts of responsibility, I believe that, throughout the 'free world', the general public, politicians & diplomats, journalists & even military leaders would greatly benefit from an awareness & understanding of personality disorders & the associated characteristics, relational strategies & goals, world views, coping mechanisms, realistic expectations, etc regarding Putin. With that in mind, I would suggest that, ideally, with accredited professionals like Dr. Dekleva, it would be best if the professional educates the audience re: several personality disorders (e.g I was hoping that 'The Dark Triad' would have been discussed), characteristic behaviours, plus the 'danger' presented by individuals with such personality disorders who are present within politics, the corporate world, other positions of influence & power, and personal relationships. Then, I guess, the conversation would have to move another guest, for the purpose of diagnosing & understanding what makes Putin tick.

Do what i take away from this is that the interviewee is comfortable and frames things within a political and diplomatic viewfinder, and does not see the real possibility that things will go entirely badly - gradually and then all at once, as a writer has said somewhere - and the scene will change radically or fundamentally. He's got some good points within that but is fundamentally no military or historical genius imho.
@derekbaker3279
@derekbaker3279 10 месяцев назад
(1) His views & the views of the interviewer strongly reflected a U.S.-based perspective & set of narratives, which have been based upon a fundamental lack of awareness & understanding of (a) the history, culture & evolving world view of the leaders & citizens of Russia, the USSR, and - now - the Russian Federation, (b) the long-term goals & the range of methods/strategies demonstrated by the Putin & the Russian Federation, (c) a deeper understanding of the true mindset & priorities of Putin, and (d) what type of 'diplomacy' will work with Putin & the Russian Federation. (2) IMHO, both Dr. Dekleva & the interviewer voiced the same narratives & assumptions that resulted in totally inadequate & very misplaced foreign policy re the Russian Federation that we've seen over the last 30 years....along with compromises which, unofficially, were influenced by accelerated levels of entanglement between politicians, businessmen, investors, corporations & banks in the U.S.A./other parts of 'the west'...AND.... industry, oligarch money, and Putin's agendas in the Russian Federation.

Those three "R's" (Ruthless, Resilient, Rational) devolve to a malign narcissism that has its basis in mortification and its covering with a projection of an undamaged self. One might call that theater "resilient" but the methods involved are as Putin presents: delusional, grandiose, messianic. He appears also (I would say "to me", but I'll admit to being a nobody out here in cyberspace) without boundaries, conscience, or limits. Our normative take on political "rationality" isn't that it's icy cold, greedy, and logical but that it reasoning has normal (or "normative") human qualities, including the brakes that expressed in common give us working cultures and societies and perhaps despite the presence of these peacocks we refer to as dictators. Be all of that as it may,I would love to hear a "rational" interpretation of "Operation Storm in Moscow" AKA "Moscow Apartment Bombings" that would not call the same an extraordinary crime rooted in narcissistic pathology.

Sounds great in theory but look at the way Red States are systematically eliminating empathy and an understanding of people in difficult circumstances from their curricula, backed by book bans. They don't want kids growing up knowing the history of oppression of some groups, leading to ongoing marginalisation. They don't want them educated to research things properly themselves rather than swallow propaganda. They want to continue to "other" marginalised groups rather than educate about them or even include a character from such a group in a picture book or novel. They don't want difference to be accepted, let alone celebrated. In this way fear, hatred of "others" and love of "strongmen" who stoke those fears and hatreds will continue to produce the wrong type of people going for, and rising to, positions of power.
