Brendan Behan wrote this when he was a Republican prisoner in Mountjoy gaol, which is near the Banks of the Royal Canal. Horses used to pull the barges along the canal before steam. They had a bell hanging from their necks to let people know their was a barge coming. I live quite close to the Royal Canal where you are more likely to see holiday barges nowadays.

As an Irishman I've been listening to this song since the cradle and I must admit this take on it has opened up a whole new dimension for me! For such a simple song its so layered and thought provoking! So go poetry, go 'The Punch Brothers', and go Ireland! Great stuff ;-)

The "Auld Triangle" written by Brendan Behan during his incarceration for the murder of two Garda Síochána in Mountjoy Jail. The triangle was the metal triangle that was beaten by the screws (wardens) every morning to waken the inmates in Mountjoy Prison, it's still there. The song is the reflection of a fictionalized IRA man on the last day of his life when he is going to be hanged. Behan wrote it about himself in memory of the Easter Rising in 1916 ... The Royal Canal was built to carry freight by barge from Longford to Dublin.

@@raaaaaaaaaager In his defense, every time the Dubliners sang it they stated themselves that it was written be Behan. But thanks for the heads up they were obviously wrong. " Subject: RE: The Ould Triangle From: GUEST,Tom Neary Date: 21 Jul 12 - 08:11 PM As a matter of clarification to the debate of who wrote The Auld Triangle, I can confirm that it was indeed Dicky Shannon who penned the song for Behan. Brendan and Dicky were very close pals, aswell as drinking mates. The song refers to the joy (Mountjoy) jail in Dublin. It was very common in those days for men to get themselves locked up, as it would guarantee bed and board for a few nights. Strange I know, but that's wha poverty does I suppose? I have many stories of their escapades together, including a visit they made to the BBC, in which Brendan promised to record a series of short stories. This was of course dependant on him being paid up front for his services. Sadly he never recorded the stories, but was given a small retainer, so the drink flowed for a while. Brendan always credited Dicky for the song because they were great pals, however, I can verify that Dicky never received a penny in royalties and neither did his family, but Brendan did give Dicky's eldest son Michael (Mickser) Shannon the boat fare to come to England in 1955. A gesture that Mickser has never forgotten. I know this to be true because I am Dicky's grandson, and he would relate his story to keep us entertained as kids. Having read Sullivans book on Behan ican see why they were such good friends. They appear to have had very similar outlooks to life."

I was listening to the Punch Brothers on my speaker while I was doing some yardwork. My 89 year old dad who was born in Arkansas came and stood by me, listening to a few of these tracks with me, and he said, "Now this is REALLY good music." I absolutely agree with him. Punch Brothers, you have your newest fan today, my dad!

For those of you who are offended by The Punch Brother's rendition of this song - it was originally written by Brendan Behan. If you listen to his version, the tempo is much different, and the lyrics are not the same. In fact, the song has been recorded many times by many different artists. If you take the time to listen to some of the other versions, you will notice that there are several different versions - and in fact the phrase "humpy gussy" is not even used in many of them. The version sung by The Punch Brothers seems to be modeled most closely on the version sung by The Pogues, and I haven't seen any criticism of their interpretation.

Thank you Barry O'Donovan for a proper response to this thoughtless rendition of a brilliant Brendan Behan song. These lads exhibit superb harmony and phrasing, but completely lack the depth of understanding of what this song is really about. This song was never meant to be funny. Do you a little research guys. Check out Luke Kelly, or the Clancy Brothers, or even the original recording by Behan himself.

If some of you want to hear only the "authentic" original, go put that recording on an infinite loop and you will never have to hear another interpretation. I say "to hell with that". This is an homage to great music done incredibly well by fantastic musicians who have taken the time and effort to honor a great tradition.

Hey guys do yourself a favor and check out luke kelly singing this.It will literally stand the hairs on your head . With all due respect to this group of fantastic English musicians, singing a song written by Brendan Behan, an Irishman, about life in jail in Dublin, is a real kick in the balls to any self respecting Irishman. Over the past 850 years , tens of thousands of proud and brave Irish men and women have been sent to jail , or sentenced to death in our own country by the English .This is a really poor choice of song i have to say.

Technically the performance is very good. The vocals and harmonies etc., But as I understand it, this is a song about an imprisoned Irish rebel on the last day of his life as he faces execution. And traditionally this is a sing-a-long with the crowd. So the crowds lack of participation (or emotion?) seems weird to me. But again - vocally well done.
