I played genesis game when I was 17. Loved it because I played the arcade at first. Genesis port reduced some background to save space. The more MB the higher cost the cartridge. Not all companies were willing to make 24MB or larger games in those days.
Do some people really complain about how Genesis v. isn't closer to cps1? Really? Cps1 was way WAY more powerfull. It is a fantastic version for what Genesis could do, i'm really impressed. Sof2 may be a better overall title, but this is top 5 beatemups material, at least in looks.
Love this game on Genesis. Back then, it was the only way to play it (at home) because few arcades had the guts to get this game. Very thankful for it then, and still now (even in the age of emulation).
It tooks right up to the 128bit era for consoles to catch up with arcades and thatr is only because the era of the arcades had pretty much ended by then.
Lots of hate in the comments for this one, I’m surprised, to me it looks like a pretty nice port. Arcade ports were only a dream back then and despite the obvious limitations, it seems good. I haven’t played it personally though but gameplay looks pretty faithful too.
Not a bad port but not great either. Could have been better if Capcom or Sega ported it themselves. Oh and a bigger cart, or a Sega CD version, would have helped as well. Anyway a friend has it, we played co-op and had good fun. And the music is fantastic.
A Sega CD version would have been SWEET especially if it was developed by the same team behind Final Fight CD. Oh, what could have been. With that said, the Genesis port is not bad. It retains its fun 2 player co-op gameplay unlike some other poor beat em up ports.
SDFcommander Yep if Sega had utilized the Sega CD more with games like this instead of crappy fmv games it coulda been so much better. A port of this on the Sega CD woulda been awesome for sure despite that I still loved and owned a Sega CD.

i think the port is just fine its has the feel of the arcade just as much as strider not sure why it looks so dark but there is a brightness control on my tv
It's because of the color limitations of the Genesis. It's probably the best port you could have expected given the limitations of the Genesis VS. the CPS-1 arcade board.

The Megadrive was capable of doing something much better than this! It looks like an 8-bit game! A real shame, considering that arcade version is one of my faves. I know we can play this on Mame now, but if I'd gotten the Megadrive version back in the day I would have been disappointed. Whatever happened to the planned PlayStation version? Now that would have been arcade perfect!
Yeargh, they could've at least included it on any one those collections and compilations along with other Capcom arcade classics on PS1 or Saturn would've been pretty nice... CHEAP-ASS MOTHERFUCKERS!!! 😡😡😡
Obviously nothing beats the arcades back then but this is actually a pretty goddamn good port for the Sega Genesis and of course it probably could've been better but again it's definitely not bad.

A possibilidade de jogar um jogo desses em casa, sem gastar dinheiro com fichas, eliminava qualquer óbvio downgrade que o jogo sofreu. Se coloquem na época pessoal, eu não tinha tanto dinheiro pra ficar gastanso com flipper. Esses ports eram a alegria de muitos. No mais, um bom port.
Ótima conversão, levando-se em consideração a época, pois naquele tempo era praticamente impossível converter um jogo do arcade sem que houvesse perdas na parte gráfica e nas animações, exceto no caso do Neo Geo AVS (que tinha conversões perfeitas). Além disso o jogo do Mega tem um som legal, gráficos bons e não fica lento mesmo quando muitos inimigos e objetos aparecem na tela ao mesmo tempo.
Bueno Neo geo MVS y aes , era prácticamente lo mismo , básicamente no se hacían conversiones de snk arcade a neogeo aes , por qué era el mismo cartucho solo con los plásticos modificados para que no se pudiera usar un cartucho casero en un arcade MVS y viceversa, pero básicamente snk no hizo una consola en si , solo " consolizo" sy sistema MVS.Asi que según mi opinión no hay mérito para snk en conversiones, porque es como si Capcom hubiera echo un cps1 con entrada cartucho siendo un mismo costo consola y sistema arcade , cuando en ese tiempo la intención de tener una consola era que fuera asequible y bajar el costo hasta un 2% de lo que costaba un sistema profesional arcade, un saludo.
One of the most underrated home console ports ever. Back in the day, gaming mags absolutely pulverized the Genesis version. Unfairly so. Despite the severe cuts in violence and graphical fidelity (the devs wisely chose to downsize character sprites before cutting any animations) it still captured the essence of the arcade original. And the co-op mode was a ton of fun. Me and my friends would rather play this game after school than the sluggish SoR 4.
arcade is a great game, faster and with more enemies in screen. mega port is a good port adapted to the system and the 16 megas of memory, could have been better but is very enjoyable and similar to arcade, not so good as street fighter and ghouls and ghosts but good
I had fun with both, at 12 I beat the arcade version with a friend, later I've enjoyed the genesis version in Argentina. Port's Soundtrack was perfect, I would love to see a reboot for the MD from nowday's programmers.

when it came out, this was an excellent conversion. Saying it's terrible makes me think you forgot how bad a conversion can be (final fight, snes). The home conversion was excellent. Still plays well to this day.
The company that handled the port didn't do as good of a job as they could have. Another company with better skill in Genesis ports could have done a better port with more cart memory and controls. FF SNES is the worst example of a beat em up port to compare it to since that one was super rushed to market.
Theshark15z Final Fight Guy was still one player with the same soundtrack, just Guy instead of Cody. Get the Sega CD port for 2 players and great soundtrack.
Final Fight was a launch title, this wasn't, pretty big difference. SNES hardware was new at the time, so no one had major experience in working with it yet. The Genesis had been out for years, programmers tended to know what made the system tick, and how to program properly for it. No excuse for some of the things changed from arcades. I have this, because I am a collector, wanted all the Capcom Genesis titles, and am a fan of arcade ports, I also have Final Fight on SNES.
Existe um bug na versão arcade. Na segunda fase, se o jogador pegar um determinado inimigo e ficar dando toques pra baixo e pra cima, em um determinado momento o jogo dá bug e elimina todos os inimigos nas fases seguinte. Depois disso é só ir andando pelas fases que todos caem mortos,até chegar no chefe final,onde o jogo, por estar bugado, o encerramento do jogo ocorre,porém o chefe fica igual louco,ainda vivo e dando soco no vazio. Fazíamos esse código direto para zerar o jogo de forma fácil.

I have the megadrive version, and I think that a 16 mega cartdrige instead of a 24 one was a bad choice... Lots of thing missed and a terrible hit detection. The worst enemy in hard modes is the time, it kills you constantly because the enemies are too lazy to come out. It´s still a good beat´em up for the system, but a bad port of the arcade game
I will never understand why they cancelled decent games like Stone Protectors or the X-Women beat 'em up, but decided to release ports like this one. The Genesis was capable of much better stuff.
Different publishers in charge of those games actually. Stone Protectors was going to be published by Vic Tokai and X-Women by Sega. You would never know if Capcom would have published those games (in the case they would have been Capcom games) like they did with The Punisher.

A sega-cd port like final fight cd would be amazing...Larger sprites with better frame rate and cd-quality audio...I know that graphically genesis is capable of amazing port but cd audio would make it even better

The arcade version won every since the start of this video but at least this came out on Sega. I'm surprised Nintendo didn't try to snatch it back in the days.
A versão do Arcade lembra Final Fighter, já a versão do Mega Drive lembra Streets of Rage,comparando as duas versões o Mega Drive tem um pouco menos de animação,falta alguns detalhes nos cenários, falta um pouco de cor,o som um pouco mais roco,em geral considerando o potencial do Mega ficou um ótimo port,mas a versão do Arcade leva a Vitória. Yo tuve el juego en sega genesis en su momento, Y aunque si había diferencias notables respecto a la versión de arca de, creo que en la versión de consola era un muy buen juego arcade pues tenía la acción y la respuesta muy rápida, sin embargo ahora ya sabemos qué los gráficos un poco limitado del sega genesis, no se debió principalmente a las limitaciones de la potencia de la, consola, sino a la prisa con que se sacaba los títulos ala venta , opino que aunque pudo hacerse algo superior en Génesis, fue una versión muy buena.

This game is very accurate to the Arcade but lacks polishment. Gameplay isnt perfect and the color palettes is not optimized (if you hack the heroes palette you could see that theres lost color shade just cause they used same colors values WTF) and some enemies looks unfinished drawed (really quick conversion) 7/10
I remember it being super difficult to find this game or the rom and than when someone dumped the rom it took forever for an emulator to come out that could play it
If "The Punisher" on SEGA had the same quality of "Streets of Rage 2", it would still be in my collection. But I sold it, because I had the ARCADE-version on my Xbox. So I didnt miss much and still had the better version, the original.

Not a good port. Some moves are missing, such as the flash kick which is useful in the arcade version. Sega proved that a decent beat-em-up could be done with Streets of Rage 2 and 3, and they were responsible for some great Capcom arcade ports on the MD. Sega should've licensed this so that the Final Fight CD team could do it. This is below Sculptured Software's usual quality... more on par with typical Tiertex work.
Genesis version looked and played like dogshit; Sculptured Software should've kept their hands off of this one. It's the gameplay really that throws me off about the port: jittery scrolling everytime Punisher/Fury walk, broken combos, missing moves, reduced damage to enemies. Shows how little Capcom cared about the Genesis.
Hay que entender que es una comparación del arcade original con una consola de sobremesa, por lo tanto para mí gustó la Mega Drive tiene todo mi respeto. Generalmente los juegos de arcades llevados a la consola de Sega siempre fueron buenos.👍
No se ve tan bién como el arcade, pero no me parece para nada una mala conversion. Yo lo pude jugar en ambas y lo disfrute mucho en las dos versiones ☺
Fue un excelente porte, aunque siempre deseé verlo tambien en SNES, creo que lo hubieran explotado mucho más, no obstante tiene mejor calidad que los porta de Capitán Comando y Final Fight a las consolas de 16 Bits, que terriblemente el Final Fight ni siquiera se podía jugar con dos player's, cosa importantísima en estos juegos cooperativos de "YO CONTRA EL BARRIO".
Se agradece poder jugar al arcade en casa, pero no es ni de lejos la mejor conversión que se podía haber hecho. Capcom lo podía haber hecho mucho mejor, y Megadrive daba para hacer algo más fiel a la recreativa. De todas maneras es un buen beat´m up, aunque no llega al nivel del mejor: "Street of Rage 1 y 2"............. 7´5/10
O jogo do mega está bem inferior em todos os aspectos; mas, destaco os gráficos que estão fraquíssimos. Parece uma comparação de uma versão de super Nintendo VS master system! poderiam ter feito melhor no mega.
It was a good port considering it is a Genesis/MD & it is also exclusively for the console. I guess i missed it as i already moved on to the next gen by that time
You don't have to worry about the Genesis/Mega Drive version anymore, Capcom is going to release the Arcade version as part of Marvel Vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics (which will come out this year), that'll make up for the lousy console port back in 94.
Game play wise the Genesis version is pretty good, +Canal Vc Decide you should do a arcade region comparison the Japanese version has different attack animations
A Capcom não caprichou nessa versão... Na verdade, parece que não havia capricho nas conversões da Capcom para a Sega nos 16 bits... Exceção apenas para a versão de Final Fight para Sega CD...
Não tem como comparar , maiores sprites, mais cores , detalhes e inimigos na tela ,o arcade têm um hardware comparável ao sistema neo geo , mas a luz da limitação do sistema ,a versão do mega até que ficou bacana .
