I was going to say, repentance or atonement means nothing if it's forced. It would be more so like community service if it was forced. A way to use an offending party for the betterment of society rather than execution or imprisonment. I feel like even battle stims would muddy the waters. The atoning person should already have that fervor for battle in themselves, if it is they truly want to atone.

Ironic that the church thinks repentance for your sins comes from torturing yourself, while pleasure demons do it to sin.

Well Guard does not use them. Only ecclesiarchy. Every factuon deals with offenders in their jurisdiction according to their policies. Such as Penal Battalions for Guardsmen or becoming Servitor for Mechanicum.

@@SnakeChkn they do have jurisdictions in their perspective areas. This is like having US Army's court martial trying to run US Navy sailor through their system and to Ft.Leavenworth. It doesn't work like that regardless of if they are allies or not (at times they are not even allies and "In the Name of The Emperor" do shoot each other). The only entity that seems to have overall authority and jurisdiction is Inquisition.

@@Caliell No one said that they had power over one another, in the event of a chaos incursion, as the lost suggests- it is likely the guard would work with the Ecclesiarcy rather than against them. Imperial factions can fight, I’m not debating that. I’m debating that they generally have priority for xenos and chaos rather than eachother. (The Templar and Grey Knights might be a different story though…)

The tau experiment on their citizens and have many black projects, they have mind scrubber technology that can harvest memories which I doubt they don't use on their populations as well. The Tau look good on the surface but some part of it is a façade and there's a corruption embedded into it's highest caste, the top ethereal have their own political motivations rather than the welfare of it's citizens. They're kind of lot a lot of modern day governments honestly. Their quality of life on their planets though overall if you're a tau is really high. Apparently they do weird psy op campaigns to break down the culture and mass migrate tau to the world and then when cultural conflicts break out they use it as justification to send more tau security and then gradually turn the society into a police state and erode away their culture sneakily to establish more of a orientation towards the greater good. They do a lot of fucked things honestly there's a potentiality that the vespid communication helms are also mind control devices. and the ethereal caste have a special organ in their foreheads I think which might be the source of the other castes suggestibility to them. The tau are in some kind of borderline mind controlled state when around the ethereal. apparently so mild that it requires complete and extended separation from ethereal to realize the influence was there to begin with.

Arco flagellants at least are pumped on a ton of steroids plus whatever surgical implants the mechanicus give so it's not implausible. I've heard sometimes they use failed astartes aspirants who get turned into vegetables to make those too A little silly for the penitent engine I agree

Yeah like I get rule of cool but these things cost money for the imperium an imperium that barely equips it ig. Seem like a waste that a sniper can take it out. So strap the pilot in protection but have some sort of nerve sensing tech that the pilot can feel every wound the machine getts.

Its about rituals to enforce dogma. Its not a waste it sets incentives and strenghthens sororitas faith, which isn their weapon. Besides one robot is hardly a void ship... IRL regimes waste resource all the time usually for political ends that serve no common good.

@@LecherousLizard They're not ALL women - at least in Soulstorm. True, the majority of them are, but you've got the Tier II "Hero," the Adeptus Mechanicus Servitors, & even the guys who act as both scouts - in that they can capture points on their own - & squad leaders who can use the Faith Skills on their squad for rapid regeneration, making their weapons effective against all targets, & reflecting damage back to the dealer. (Although, they're pretty useless when it comes to actual combat - especially when you've upgraded the squad they're connected to with weapons that outrange the guy's Bolter Pistol.) So, there is room to have men operating Penitent Machines in the game. They just didn't do so for aesthetic reasons, & to keep with the whole "SISTERS of Battle' theme.
