The story of three taxi drivers from Bradford West Yorkshire Fazal, Patrick, and Azad driving to Pakistan in old Mk2 transit vans in the 90s in time for the Muslim day called Eid . A route taken by many British Pakistanis and the reason why so many old british ford transits are in Pakistan with most still going strong.

What a shame they didn’t just head for the Iranian border and apply for transit visas. That’s what we did. We drove the same route in 1998 and we couldn’t get Iranian tourist visas, so just went to the border and got transit visas. We drove independently U.K. to Kathmandu and back. 18 countries, 22,366 miles in 12 months in an ex-British Rail Sherpa canteen van. Awesome 😎

I really enjoyed this. I was in Pakistan twice in 1997 , once for a month in Feb 1997 and 9 weeks in end July to early Oct 1997. I had EID and Ramadan there. It was great, very friendly people. I thoroughly recommend it especially Chitral and I wish I'd spent more time in Chitral, Tirich Mir at Shogram where there was a public holiday and a spectacle of Polo match and so many people travelled there to the highest village before Tirich Mir base camp the highest mountain in the Hindu Kush at over 25000 ft. It was great to see the carrabean guy going with you. He will have such lovely memories for his whole life and you have so many surprises, meet so many different nationalities like I did at the Tourist camp Islamabad where I was broke but shared a room with 2 kind and interesting Kurdish refugees who told me so much of their life stories and how much they struggle having no country. Doesn't politics stink but the people normally are lovely and often the poorer they are the bigger their smiles and hearts. God bless you all and thank you for sharing your travels here. I'd love to go myself in a truck, minibus or privately by local transport and now Afghanistan is open too I got a letter of recommendation for Iranian transit visa in 1986 but due to time constraints I flew with my brother to Delhi then went to Nepal after 5 days in Delhi as it was so full of people and touts we weren't used to but I've been many times since mainly staying in the mountains and valleys like the Yarkhun Valley. There were Shiite Muslims in Yarkhun valley who wore very colourful clothes and they really were a delight to meet as were Kailash and Sunni and afghans of different cultures including ones from panshir valley who were refugees. The education and seeing life on travels is truly a blessing and education even if some things are shocking but that's often counteracted by the warmth, humanity, kindness of the people who put many of us in the west to shame.

@Davy this has brought back some great memories for me, I did the same trip in 1976 (Derby - Ghorghushti 50 mls from Rawalpindi) with a good friend who had lived in Derby since he was young. We did almost the same route in a Diesel Transit 1971 model and a 1960 Morris FGK (ex British Rail £200 from auction). Our route was a bit different at the beginning we went to France first and at the end of the journey we went Iran - Afghanistan - Pakistan. We stayed there for 4 months and loved every day, and then I said goodbye to Azlam (my friend from Derby) and drove back in our £200 truck that had done 13,000 miles when I got home.

Such a Classic Documentary l, can't believe it's over Thirty years old as seems like it was only yesterday. I could watch this over and over and never get bored of it. I felt for Faisal and his friends when they we're unfortunately hindered from continuing the rest of their journey by road half way through. Very comical in parts too, especially with Azad and the burnt out seats he was carrying with him on top of the van 😂 This was a great trip to experience long before the age of smart phones 📱 and social media existed.

They managed to get through Iran too and didn't have too much trouble either. It is my wish too to go to Pakistan by road and have the experience of going through so many countries. Infect I just had some experience of driving through Europe doing almost 4000 miles in my car in August 2014 in just 12 days.
