The Purpose Of Leader Lines

Using a leader line when fishing for catfish can be very beneficial. A lighter leader is ideal for fishing heavy cover to help prevent losing your entire rig, while a heavier leader line can stand more abrasion if you are catching lots of fish in a short period of time.

Well this rod worked just as I hoped it would ru-vid.comUgkxntWMOZsO1Zfv-pdn_XuffEtNkTYAYu4Z recommend After reading some reviews I worried that the tip would break on this 8'6'' ultralite rod. I use it to target crappie but also end up getting larger species from time to time. Took it fishing this weekend for the first time and it performed flawlessly. The rod is rated for up to 6 lb test line so I set the drag on my reel to about 5 lbs. That's plenty to winch in crappie and more than enough to wear out larger fish. The largest fish I caught was about a seven pound alligator gar that was fun to bring in with such light tackle. Never felt like the rod was overly stressed. I think that if you set the drag to a reasonable amount beforehand and dont raise it while you are fishing, you should not have any problems breaking this rod and have fun treating large bass like line burning tuna

FINALLY!!!! A good, concise and easy to understand explanation. I've just recently started using leader lines and lo and behold I've been doing it ALL wrong lol. Thank you very much. Just one problem with leader lines, but it's the same with fishing in general. Saving the weight, bead and leader you lose the hook which is kind of, at times, the most expensive of the whole setup. But oh well, I like the idea :D

I like using braid to mono or braid to flouro. Get the sensitivity of the braid but the abrasion resistance of the mono, or the sinking effect of flouro. flouro leaders can make lures float slightly deeper, and mono slightly shallower. There's lots of benefits to using leaders.

I fish saltwater and use 20lb mono mainline with 50lb mono leader line on a carolina rig for big drum and stripers. Also we put shockleaders inbetween, like either a 30/40lb mono fishing line piece about 10 to 15 feet long to protect the line during casting and from chafing on the weights. You should mention that dedicated leader line is much larger diameter and more resistant than typical fishing line.

@fredflintstone1547

good job! I realize that your page is mainly about catfish, but I would like to mention that when fishing around pilings, branches, submerged trees, etc. people sometimes use a long leader of extra heavy/abrasion resistant line in case the hooked fish decides to swim in and around multiple different obsticles you can still have a chance at reeling him in. People will often use very light/fine leaders for sensitive/spooky fish like native/wild trout and salmon. The idea is that the lighter line is harder for the fish to see. This is a standard practice and one of the most common uses for a leader line. There are also leaders made of steel for fish that have gnarly grills - like sharks.\ Fly fishing is an entirely different realm where lines can float or sink, leaders are tapered and tippets are even finer leaders for the leader you've already got. Fly fishing has a significant learning curve to become proficient, however I have caught more trout on fly-gear in a few years than I have by using spinners and spoons in my entire lifetime. I wouldn't bring my fly-tackle to a lake though, only moving water.

Thank you! This is so informative, I can't believe it took me this long to understand the point of a leader. Can you please post a video about how to use the drag? When you let it go, versus pull the fish in? I think this would make a great basics fishing series, just an idea.
@simplyengineering2350
@simplyengineering2350 2 года назад
There are more benefits as well. You can combine attributes of lines by using leaders. Braid is sensitive, Flouro sinks, and Mono floats and stretches. Mono is also very abrasion resistant. Flouro and Mono will effect floating and sinking lures. Flouro will make a lure float slightly deeper or sink faster, and mono slightly shallower and sink slower. So if you have a floating lure or slow sinking lure that you need to go a little deeper then you can add a flouro leader. and et cetera.

Basically what it boils down to is if your willing to risk your weight and swivel...especially the weight cause them bigger 4oz and larger no roll sinkers are pretty pricey. Its bad enough losing a large circle hook let alone the weight etc to. Thanks for the info Chris! Love your channel brother!!!

Well done. And you can also put a “break point” anywhere in the chain you want with a short piece of light line. The point is: you should KNOW where your line is going to part.

Hey buddy. I got a tip for you from the carp side. You can go with your first scenario all the time if you use a carp style hook link aka leader. These leaders are braid that is coated with a thick rubber. I use them for my flat fishing here in Arizona. That way you can always go half your mainline strength. Also you can add a carp style safety set up to to drop your weight if you get snagged. I’ve been using carping tactics for flats and it does wonder. Your friend Jess Arizona carp anglers

My target fish is about 25 to 45 lbs tuna, I use 65 lbs topline braided and 50 lbs mono mainline I use 65 lbs topline because 40 lbs fish become heavier during the drag as becoming closer to you when you reel up. In my own experience I guess thats the most safest way to do to avoid your line snapped.
