Watch The Pursuit Of Happyness (2006) Now: AAN.SonyPictures.com/ThePursui...
Will Smith stars in this moving tale inspired by the true story of Chris Gardner, a San Francisco salesman struggling to build a future for himself and his 5-year-old son Christopher (Jaden Smith). When his girlfriend Linda (Thandie Newton) walks out, Chris is left to raise Christopher (Jaden Smith) on his own. Chris' determination finally pays off when he lands an unpaid internship in a brutally competitive stockbroker-training program, where only one in twenty interns will make the cut. But without a salary, Chris and his son are evicted from their apartment and are forced to sleep on the streets, in homeless shelters and even behind the locked doors of a metro station bathroom. With self-confidence and the love and trust of his son, Chris Gardner rises above his obstacles to become a Wall Street legend.

I had a very similar moment after I opened up business after 5 years going back to school doing my volunteer work doing my part time job and my full-time job while taking care of my disabled father. Just being able to open up shop and having the opportunity to finally sleep normal. And seeing business returns that you control and a reasonable work-life balance finally show up with a clean and safe apartment after moving out of a shithole with rats and cockroaches with a little savings to boot. It really does make you want to cry.

Every day, thousands of Americans go through that same range of emotions. Fear of being told no, the relief of hearing the good news, the elation that everything will work out now... Whether it's a new job, marrying the love of your life, welcoming a new child into the world, finding out you've done something others considered impossible.... it's a great feeling, and this mans story should be held up as an example: Yes, life is tough, it will beat you down at times, but if you can stick it out, push through the tough times... your perseverance will pay off.

The brilliant, arresting, hypnotic performance of this great actor is well supported by camera work, capturing simultaneously the oblivious world of ringing phones, endless chatter, busy movements of suited workers contrasting with the deeply emotional struggle of a man who is about to learn what hard work can achieve. The hiring managers, while happy for him, do not disturb his moment of victory. They shake his hand and leave the man to breathe the well earned victory.

This is one of my favorite scenes of all time from any tv/movie/media. How relatable it is for everyone who has ever been through the struggle and made it out the other side. Tgat something as mundane as a job offer can mean so, so much. Can validate all the hard work, sacrafice, the utter loneliness, and how terrifying that fear of failure can be when failure means you can't eat. This scene after whole movie, completely destroyed me. Notice how he wasn't a diversity hire. Notice how he wasn't hired because he was from a marginalized or oppressed community. He was hired because he busted his ass and strived to be the best. He showed his worth and didn't blame anyone for how fucked up his life was. He earned that position by putting in the work. He pulled himself up from the literal bottom. And if he can do it, so can you.

What I’d really like is the story of one of other applicants, the one whose father was forced into early retirement when his back gave out from years of manual labor and barely gets any pension; whose mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer but can’t afford any treatment, and now the parents are facing eviction; whose sister succumbed to a drug addiction; whose child is special needs; the applicant who desperately needs this job to try to save the family and after months of hard work does NOT get this job because capitalism forces the individual to be solely responsible for each of these situations, then forces the individual to compete with other desperate individuals to have even a chance at clawing a way out of the misery and destitution it forces upon society. Chris deserves the job. But we ALL deserve a dignified, materially secure existence. F*ck capitalism, and this and all the other movies for trying to trick us into thinking hard work is the only way we justify, we earn, material security.

@@threth5176 no, I want the people who actually work hard - the workers - to reap more of what the make, so they aren’t left to die when there’s no more value to be extracted from them, instead of shareholders and owners earning millions on their backs. I understand what you mean, but his life is similar to many people in this world who struggle severely. The real takeaway is that even when life beats you down, it's a person's will and perseverance that will make or break a person. In this case, it was his tenacity and perseverance that made him. And just think, there are people who have it far worse than he did in his lowest times. The film weighs heavily on the heart, that's for sure, so I get your point. But people live this every day.
