My cover of Suzanne Vega's 'The Queen and the Soldier'. This is one of those rare cases of modern oral tradition, in that I've never actually heard the recording by the original artist.
Rather, it's a song that I've only ever heard sung live by my friends, and one that I've learned through hanging out at jam sessions back when I was still in highschool. That being said, I imagine there's most likely a little tune and lyrical drift from the original.

"THE QUEEN AND THE SOLDIER" - written by Suzanne Vega
The soldier came knocking upon the queen's door
He said, "I am not fighting for you any more"
The queen knew she'd seen his face someplace before
And slowly she let him inside.
He said, "I've watched your palace up here on the hill
And I've wondered who's the woman for whom we all kill
But I am leaving tomorrow and you can do what you will
Only first I am asking you why."
Down in the long narrow hall he was led
Into her rooms with her tapestries red
And she never once took the crown from her head
She asked him there to sit down.
He said, "I see you now, and you are so very young
But I've seen more battles lost than I have battles won
And I've got this intuition, says it's all for your fun
And now will you tell me why?"
Well the young queen, she fixed him with an arrogant eye
She said, "You won't understand, and you may as well not try"
But her face was a child's, and he thought she would cry
But she closed herself up like a fan.
And she said, "I have swallowed a secret burning thread
It cuts me inside, and often I've bled"
He laid his hand then on top of her head
And he bowed her down to the ground.
"Tell me how hungry are you? How weak you must feel
As you are living here alone, and you are never revealed
But I won't march again on your battlefield"
And he took her to the window to see.
And the sun, it was gold, though the sky, it was gray
And she wanted more than she ever could say
But she knew how it frightened her, and she turned away
And would not look at his face again.
And he said, "I want to live as an honest man
To get all I deserve and to give all I can
And to love a young woman who I don't understand
Your highness, your ways are very strange."
But the crown, it had fallen, and she thought she would break
And she stood there, ashamed of the way her heart ached
She took him to the doorstep and she asked him to wait
She would only be a moment inside.
Out in the distance her order was heard
And the soldier was killed, still waiting for her word
And while the queen went on strangling in the solitude she preferred
The battle continued on.

I just stumbled upon this, three years after you posted it, and over ten years since I first heard you regale the Towne of KeyPoynt with it the first time you visited our fires. I sit here with tears pouring down my cheeks having just listened to it. My old friend, you have NO idea how topical this is to me and how much it expresses the great upheaval I have experienced in my life these past years. Thank you for all you do, my friend and fellow troubadour. I hope to share a Bardic circle with you again some day.

Lovely Michael. I first heard this when a group called Grada came to my local club. It really is a great song and sung beautifully.

I've decided this song exists in a world I created about an empress in her youth. As she grew older she continued to hide any and all vulnerabilities and tried to fill the ever-growing gaping hole in her chest with power and control. Over time she grew cold and callous and just became hollow and shallow because everything within her died. In her attempts to gain more power she became trapped and immortal and turned into an insane abomination whose only obsession was dragging more souls into itself to suffer. She actually did care about her consort but couldn't bring herself to acknowledge or show it, and instead ended up abusing, misusing and neglecting him. If her need for connection had only outweighed her anxiety things could've been very different and much less tragic.

Not even Vega herself can carry this song the way you do. Dang.

Wow Michael. I really like the Suzanne Vega version, but I have to say I like yours more. Beautifully sung and played. Really nice. Thanks for sharing.

I second this. Michael's version sounds more subdued and mournful and I think is more befitting of the queen's resignation to her fate

I can't say I like Michael's version more than Vega's version since I love the original too much. But if there is ever a worthy cover, this is it. I love this.

please, study music and come back in a few years, this comment is ridiculous
@Skylarynn

@@billybramwell I kinda agree with the op, I prefer Michael's version. You don't have to study music to have a favorite between two versions of a song, it's merely an opinion. You can like the original better, I can like this one better. It's more ridiculous that you left this comment than for the op to prefer this version of the song.

@@billybramwell I have studied music, that comment is completely irrelevant. Personal preference and such. I absolutely prefer this version to the original. Vega is an absolute master of her craft, but this version just does some things in a way that strike me right. My music degree means nothing in this conversation.

Michael, this is, in my opinion completely better than the original. I prefer it, it is beautiful! As an amateur guitarist(and someone who in two weeks will be singing in front of my monarch and regent) could I beg you for the chords? I don't think I can nail the picking pattern but a medieval/renaissance style plucking followed by a couple notes could pass I think.

I'm so sorry I never got back to you on this. Somehow I missed your comment when it was first posted, and only saw it now when a new comment popped up on the video. I'm not sure what the names are for most of the chords, as they're not standard ones that I use for very much, but I can give you them. Part A used for the Intro/Verse: (Am) - 002210 ? - 003013 - Easiest to use your ring and pinkie fingers for the ones on 3rd fret ? - 030013 and 020013 - Just move your ring finger from the D string to the A string. Then alternate back and forth between ring finger on fret 3 and middle finger on fret 2 for the ornamentation. This repeats a couple of times, then goes into part B, used for the chorus and instrumental breaks: ? - 003013 - Same as in part A ? - 002013 - Switch from ring finger on fret 3 to middle finger on fret 2 ? - 000213 - Still using middle finger, just moves from D string to G string D7 - 000212 - Ring finger shifts position on high E. Stay on this chord for half as long as usual. ? - 000211 - I usually bridge the first two strings with index. Half as long as usual, just as above. Then the chorus finishes with a single run through part A. The picking pattern that I use is generally a variation of (string names, not actual notes): AEBGDG-AEBGDG or DEBGDG-DEBGDG (the E's are all high E's. You won't touch the low E at all in the song) Or if string numbers are easier for you: 265434-265434 / 365434-365434 Hope this helps you out. :) I find it a lot easier to show someone this sort of thing than to try to explain it.
