Republished in 4K on the passing of Queen Elizabeth II From the Film Australia Collection. Made by The National Film Board 1954. Directed by Colin Dean. This film is the official record of the 1954 tour of Australia by Queen Elizabeth II. The Queen in Australia is a landmark in Australian history. It not only records the first visit by a reigning monarch to Australia, it was also the first colour, feature-length documentary made in this country. This historic program provides nationwide coverage of the 1954 Royal Tour by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and HRH the Duke of Edinburgh - a two-month journey that took in every facet of Australian life: garden parties at Government House, dancers at the Tivoli, racing at Randwick, tennis at Kooyong with Rosewall and Hoad, cricket with the Don, even a meeting with Papua New Guinean tribal chiefs. The young royals visited every state in the nation, and this film captures it all. The result is a remarkable and revealing insight into our nation in the 1950s.

Finally! The full film! Makes me feel extra proud to own one of the fibreglass crowns that was fixed to the cars in the Royal procession. I can watch this and say "I think it's that one you know...."

Hi Kazashi. The National Film and Sound Archive and the National Archives of Australia hold many 35mm film components for this film. The National Archives of Australia scanned this 4K copy from prints held in their collection. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Hi Viva. This film was shot on 35mm Ferraniacolor. The first feature length documentary shot in colour in Australia. At the end of each day’s shoot, the original negative was flown to England for processing by Denham Laboratories. The material from the first day’s shoot of the Queensland leg of the tour was lost in a plane crash in Singapore. The original negatives and prints are stored at the National Archives of Australia and the NFSA. The NAA scanned this 4K copy from prints held in their collection.

4:10 I read in a biography of QEII that there was quite a bit of controversy about who would greet her first when she set foot in Australia. It was because of the officiousness and jockeying of the Lord Mayor that a floating temporary dock thing was constructed so that when HM stepped off the royal barge, the Governor-General and the PM could be the first to greet her, and then when she stepped onto land, the Lord Mayor got to do his bit.
