I rcall the occasion clearly. Just before the launching ceremony, a Harrier appeared, slowed and hovered over Walney channel, nose facing the slipway. As Her Majesty launched 'Invincible', the plane slowly dipped its nose so that it appeared to be bowing to the ship, then levelled off again and sfter a few sconds, shot up vertically into the clouds.

Thank you I live in Barrow they don't get the recognition they deserve. Now the queen no longer does the launch day's. Building a submarine is more complex than a space shuttle. A minority think they're not needed.

I was at Achool this day May 1977, had a ticket for the launch but clashed with a Maths exam, a couple of years later though I had joined the RN and crossed her path up in Scotland on her sea trials, I was serving on HMS Bacchante ,

I was there that day working, serving lunch to the VIPs. The Queen and Prince Philip shook the hands of all the staff as they left. I’ll always treasure the moment. Thanks for posting this and reminding me.

My Dad was on this ship and I had friends that had been on it when I served. This is fun to see it being called an ASW Cruiser. Prior even to Through Deck Cruiser, and then just Carrier. Shows how small she was with being quoted at 16000 tonnes. A T45 is nearly 9000 tonnes so not far off displacement wise. I know she got heavier as life went on, but even though they were still big ships, they were babies by the standards of true Carriers.

Me too - mine was on Walney and I've just realised the pink I chose for the painting I did when we got back was far too pastel! Oh God I was five years (and a day) old.

An "anti-submarine cruiser" because Britain was shrinking and aircraft carriers were deemed a bit too much.

Escort carriers would still be vital during a potential war. Though she exceeded expectations at the falklands

167 million quid for vince! Crazy how much ships now cost the RN, consolidating all shipbuilding to BAE no doubt helped this further
@dissol
@dissol 3 года назад
It wasn’t BAE in those days; it was still Vickers. That then became British Shipbuilding after nationalization, which then became VSEL after being privatized again. VSEL was bought ought, after rejecting the BAE offer by Lord Weinstock, who then sold it on to BAE systems.

@@dissol yea true, what I was saying was letting one place do all the building had jacked things up massively and what does jack get? Shoddy ships out of build that are way behind on schedule, back in the day they had the dockyards pumping out ships plus the likes of yarrow and vosper to name some
