Can you forgive a Nazi? Does he show remorse? Does that even matter? In the mid 50s David the Duke of Windsor, formerly known as Edward VIII King of the United Kingdom, was exposed as a Nazi sympathizer during the Second World War by the release of the "Marburg files". How Queen Elizabeth II reacted to this revelation is shown in the episode "Vergangenheit" of the Netflix series "The Crown".

A young German should know the history of Edward's relationship.with Hitler. There is no doubt that Hitler would put him back.on the throne, thus the Marbourg files. He was a traitor in every sense.

Young Germany knows ..Germany has been really good about accepting guilt and educating everyone about the Sins of Their Country so that it never happens again. Sure wish here in the middle of America it would be the same for America's sins.

I see a difference between personal forgiveness which as Rev Graham pointed out Jesus demands of us, and the Queen's duty to her people as sovereign. David was her favourite uncle, and she wanted so much to forgive him, but couldn't. But even if she had found it in her heart to forgive this wrong doing, I mean let's face it, Edward VIII was nothing but a traitor to his country, that didn't mean she should give him any kind of position representing the British government. If he had had his way, her father would have been deposed, and him brought back on to the throne, by the Führer. Such an act of treachery, (regardless of personal feelings) meant he should never be welcome in his country again. And his niece was not just anybody. She was the monarch of the country, and titular head of the Church of England. I agree with our young German friend here. This was indeed the best episode of the series, because it shows the conflict between her Christian values, love for her family, and duty towards her countrymen.

I love this scene of the Queen Elizabeth II, to give him hell for him expecting anything after what he put everyone including her country where he betrayed his own country. I loved her for the determination to speak the truth to him. Wonderfully done!

As portrayed (& as I have generally imagined) this was a terribly difficult decision for Her Majesty. She must have felt torn apart by all the conflicts, but the Crown had to be upheld & in that she did her duty as anointed Sovereign. The uncrowned King brought most of his troubles upon himself & his family members who remained loyal to the ideas of their duties were the ones who paid the dearest price.

If only the king would act with such authority towards Harry and the modern day Wallace....

I’ve only ever seen clips of this show but, it’s funny how The Crown sideswiped her uncle for his Nazi connections, but did it ever address the fact that Prince Philip’s three sisters were married to Nazi officers and he was photographed walking with Nazis in a parade? The Windsors and Mountbattens were both far more Germanic than British, which is why Diana is supposedly to have told Philip that her “title” as a Spencer went further back than his when he threatened her with losing her HRH status if she didn’t “behave” and whether the exchange ever took place or not, it is actually true. I often thought that when her brother, Earl Spencer, delivered her eulogy and said, “A very British girl, who transcended nationality…” it was a covert dig at the Windsors to remind them of her lineage dating back to the 16th century, while the Windsors changed their name from the House of Hanover in 1917.

Like many others, I wonder what would have happened if Edward had never abdicated. The simplest departure point, I understand, is that he never meets Wallace Simpson. If I'm remembering this correctly, their meeting was pure chance. A few minutes difference might have changed history. Then again, I think the Establishment would have still sought a way to oust him or curtail his authority.

His diaries, seen after his death, make it clear he expected to be king again. His stubborn arrogance is stunning.

I agree he should have never been allowed to be king considering he knew about the concentration camps.think about how many people died in those camps.HeShould have been tried as a war crimes criminal because of what he knew.

Forgiveness and reconciliation are two completely different things. She can forgive while still keeping him outside the family and the country without giving him another chance for the stability of the nation

I love this episode! I would like to know how true the Duke Windsor was portrayed, meaning did he really act like this. He had an excuse for everything! My grandparents told me about his love for Nazis and they called Wallis a well. You can guess I won't repeat the word.😊❤

I do wonder sometimes about forgiveness in certain cases. For example, if someone has not offended against you, but against someone else with whom you don't have a relationship, is forgiveness even at issue? In the prayer it says "And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us." If someone has not trespassed against us, but has trespassed against someone else, is our forgiveness even necessary? I wonder about this.

After watching the episode dealing with the Duke of Windsor, I recalled Mark Felton's video about "The Man Who Would be King - Again?" That was about the suggestion in 1946 that the sector of Germany occupied by British troops, which included Hannover, should become a monarchy under the then Duke of Windsor. It's easy to see why that proposal went nowhere fast. For another two or three decades the far right in the UK, which knew it had no hope of gaining power through the ballot box, dreamt that "the people" would somehow recall the Duke to the throne in some national crisis, and that the restored king would then appoint Sir Oswald Mosley, once the leader of the old British Union of Fascists, as Prime Minister. Although the details may have remained secret, we knew all which side he was on.
