The tiny basketball court inside the Riis Center at the Queensbridge Houses was responsible for producing some of the top basketball players in New York City. Tony Bruin, Gene Waldron, Dwayne Johnson, Vern and Vic Fleming, Ray Martin, Metta World Peace and Ronnie Williams - among many others - learned the game playing in Queensbridge. #tonybruin #mettaworldpeace #vernfleming #genewaldron #dwaynejohnson #basketball #syracuseuniversity #queensbridge #longislandcity #astoria #materchristi #ronartest

So many great players like Ray Martin, Roy Beekman, Andy Walker, but many more who never made it to play college ball. Those young people lived on the courts on the 41 side of the 12th Street and played throughout the night once the flood lights were put on the Block. Those players were phenomenal!

My pop's used to tell stories of playing ball in NYC back in the days. His favorite was when he played against Tony Bruin one summer in Astoria. His team played against Tony's team as the first game that year. Pop's team won that game lol

Name one place in New York City within a five year.-10 yr . That produced so many D1 and pro players be they NBA or Europe? That’s Queensbridge, Long Island city, Sunnyside, Woodside and Astoria all with then 2 miles of each other there had to be 40 D1 players in that area from 1978 to 1988

Bernard Rencher and Greg Coles were very tough for Mater Christi in 1974/1975 and they both had good careers on the college Basketball ball circuit during the mid 70’s to the early 80’s(Greg Coles played for Clemson And Bernard Rencher played 1 year at Notre Dame and 3 years for St.John’s).
