Dumpman is back! Today I have taken a trip to Brighton Beach at the crack of Dawn to meet up with Chris Bedford, AKA, Dumpman. We are exploring the remnants of the Magnus Volk's electric 'Daddy Long Legs' railway - half train, half boat that ran at the end of the 19th Century.
Brighton and Rottingdean Seashore Electric Railway opened 28 November 1896, but was nearly destroyed by a storm the night of 4 December. Volk immediately set to rebuilding the railway including the Pioneer, which had been knocked on its side, and it reopened in July 1897.
Dumpman explore disused railways and sells wonderful DVDs of his adventures. Check out his catalogue on his website here: dumpman.co.uk/

Great video. Living in Brighton as a child spent many hours on the beach at Black Rock (the Marina did away with those beaches) and the beaches to the east winkling and crabbing and swimming in the larger pools. Remember jumping between the concrete blocks. Obviously unaware what they were at the time. I have a couple of the Victorian postcard images. Thanks Dumpman for showing Volbs! 🙂

Yes...our favourite winkling spot buried under millions of tons of concrete...and all we got out of it was a Marina Pass that wiped our Credit/Debit Cards clean! (Soon did away with even that, didn't they?)...When I was a kiddie in Brighton the Sunday walk along the Undercliff to Rottingdean and back was a regular feature in our household - that is when my mother didn't take it into her head to go further afield...Lewes and back (about a 15 or 16 mile round trip from our house) was another of her favourites.

I grew up in Brighton and still live here. As a child I used to 'tombstone' off the Banjo groyne (only at high tide) where the Daddy long legs started it's journey. At low tide, you could see a piece of railway track and I always used to wonder what it was doing there and how it got there. I wasn't aware at the time of the Daddy long legs or that such a thing existed. I also used to have recurring, vivid dreams as a child of the Daddy long legs and I can still picture it in detail, inside and out. It wasn't until i was in my 40's that I became aware of such a thing actually existing. Very bizarre and I've been fascinated by it ever since.

Hi Richard, that was absolutely fascinating! I remember being taken down to the beach as a kid by my parents and seeing those stone blocks that Magnus Volk's used as sleepers. The original Daddy Long Legs, named "Pioneer" was wrecked in a storm in 1896 and was rebuilt even taller! They have a very nice model of in the Brighton Toy Museum. Keep up the good work!

@@ramibu239 Hello, yes we are fine except for the choking smoke! My niece lives on south 68th, up on the hill. A few weeks ago they had blm riots roaming the neighborhood, now they have level 3 evac notice. So far their home is safe. 🙏 My sister and aunt& uncle live in the mohawk valley 1/2 way to Marcola and also have had to evacuate! Their homes also have so far escaped the wildfires. Every parking lot in Springfield is full of RVs and cars with people who have escaped the fire up the Mckenzie valley. Most of them have lost everything. The towns of Blue River and Vida are burned to the ground and many small neighborhoods along the river are destroyed. 😥 It's all so heartbreaking. But you know, the people around here are amazing! The Red Cross set up a collection station at Springfield High school and everyone is donating huge amounts of food and supplies, almost anything newly homeless people might need. Their kindness gives me hope.

@@susanolson3611 o my! How nerve racking for your niece. They marched a block from us about a month ago. We were glad they didnt come down our street!😱 You could hear the way they were screaming & pounding drums, but the guy on the bullhorn in particular was so frightening! He just sounded so full of hate, we thought he was gonna invoke a riot in our neighborhood!😞 Glad your family has made it out all unscathed!!!🙏💗 So so sad! We heard about Blue River & Vida!😢 My Mom & I said we will have to take a drive up there when it is all clear. Its just going to be so saddening to see!!! Has to be so sad & traumatizing to loose your home, but your whole community/town!? Feel so sorry for them all!😞 Yesterday I had an apt set to go get an epidural in my neck for pain management. The air was just so horrible to be in. That ash & soot creeps into every nook & cranny! As soon as we got in the car & turned it on we both got a face full of it from the AC!🤭🤧 Didn't think I'd ever get it out of my eyes!😭😩😅 And of course cause we were leaving the house & at home neither of us had our mask on!😬 We certainly did after that!!! At least they are predicting a West wind tonight so hopefully it will blow it back out of here. And more so, that it will blow the the fire back onto itself and to where it had already burned so it will die!!!!🤞🙏

@@ramibu239 I didn't know the blm rioters came so close to your home! You must have been terrified! They have destroyed, hurt and killed. I can't believe this is being allowed. I hope people will vote our government officials out and vote in some with sense! I'm sorry to hear that pain is still a part of your life. Your comments are always so cheery and friendly, that it's easy to believe that you have a charmed life. We use to take drives up river and stop at the Vida cafe for pie, I think we will also go and look. 😞 Stay safe.

@@susanolson3611 yeah they started at Peterson Barn, which is just one block over, then marched up Royal at the end of our street. Not sure where they went then, but they came back around 11ish & left. Several of them drove up our street as they did, I counted over a 100 cars on our security cams when they did - it was nuts! I couldn't believe so many. Luckily we didn't hear where any damages had been done in our area when they came though, so thay was good! Agree w/ you on the politics! I just can't believe our government officials allow this to continue. I know our constitutional rights say we have the right to peacefully protest, but there is nothing peaceful about any of this! Yes, we liked to stop at Vida Cafe too. I wonder of that Christmas Shop made it through?! Probably not!☹ We bought many a Village piece there thru the years! It was just always such a lovely drive over to bend w/ all the pretty old farm houses, & tall evergreens!!! Its gonna be so strange next time we take that drive. I have a feeling it'll take the landscape a long time to recover from this one! I was wondering how all of the Covered Bridges made it through? Both up Mackenzie & Mohawk? The drive to Bend from Salem around Detroit Lake was another gorgeous drive, especially in the Fall. The colors against the lake was stunning! Wow - its all gonna be so different!

There was storm damage from time to time, but the local corporation had a real down on Magnus too - it's amazing the conventional railway survived - they lopped off the Palace Pier end first, then later on the Black Rock end (to build the Swimming Pool)...then later still made life very difficult at points between...

Great to see Chris back on your channel again! A very well told story too. One question - what kept the carriage on the rails? Regardless of its weight, the wind and sea could easily lift it clear of the track in the strongest of storms.
@chrisbedford4731
@chrisbedford4731 4 года назад
The carriage weighed 40 tons Nigel and relied on its slender legs not putting up enough resistance to the waves to knock it over, although the big storm of December 1896 did knock it over, I think this was the only time, cheers Dumpman.
