My flatmate Chris and I went on a 3 week trip, where we got to travel through China, Tibet & Nepal with the highlight of reaching Mt Everest base camp.
However, our plans fall apart with Chris being hospitalised with severe altitude sickness. Will we succeed with our quest for Everest?
Travelling with G Adventures, the first episode sees our journey begin in Beijing where we visit the Great Wall of China and the Forbidden City, before taking a 2 day train to Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, travelling on the highest railway in the world.
In Tibet they explore the various monasteries and sites before taking a bus towards Mt Everest. And that's when Chris got really ill...
Check out Episode 2 as they travel to Nepal right here:

And almost every city bus in China has a camera. That's for security. I don't see a reason why this has to be distorted in such a way.

+xiaoyi jing Have you been to Tibet. Tibetans are required to put a picture of Mao to Xi in their home and fly Chinese flag.
@chloeagnew1
@chloeagnew1 8 лет назад
Peta Gonkyi Yes I've been there. But your reply is totally irrelevant to my post. Of course I know that they are forced to put a photo of Mao. I am saying that cameras in buss is common in every single city. I didn't say anything about what photos they are forced to show. What's your point?
@liangyang191
@liangyang191 8 лет назад
+xiaoyi jing I have been to Tibet for two times, at least the Tibetans I met admire Mao and they are free to put a Mao's picture. Before Dalai Lama exiled, he was the biggest slave owner, slaves' noses,ears,arms or legs were cut off for punishment. But Dalai Lama as a spirit leader, fanatics and some ordinary do still admire him,they miss the days they were nobles. I just can say people who say Tibetans are forced to put Mao's picutre are ignorant and paranoid, why CCP only force Tibetans to do that, why Uyghurs and other ethnics can avoid this kidda thing?
@user-sv3ql4mp9u
@user-sv3ql4mp9u 8 лет назад
No, the Tibetans in Tibet are actually not force to put on Mao’s portrait. Many of them especially the older generation do truly admire Mao. And yes, these happened to some of those Uyghurs in Xinjiang too. I have been to Hainan, the most southern province of China… I saw the same scenario there, many families with older generation members love to hang Mao’s portrait in their home or shops. I asked them why? Every one of them said… because Mao is a true great leader, unlike some of those corrupted officials nowadays in China.

It's my favorite travel trilogy on RU-vid. More like a movie than a documentary/blog with all these twist and turns, unexpected incidents, developing characters and so on. The third part is epic, I watched it on numerous occasions and still get goosebumbs.

This is probably the best Video on a Tibet "Backpacking Tour" which includes that Hi-speed Train ride on RU-vid! You guys did something I always dreamed about! I read Alexandria David Neel's book "Journey to Lhasa" back in the 1970's, then when I wanted to go there happened to be lots of "unrest" and the place was closed to tourists for a while. Now I'm 64 and have my own health issues; I'd never survive it. Also, I'd shoot my mouth off too because I've read so much about the Chinese atrocities in Tibet, Nuclear Waste dumps on the plateau, Internment camps for Tibetans, the prohibition of using the Tibetan language in schools etc. The whole thing is to exterminate the Tibetan Culture and it frustrates me to no end. Nice work guys, very professional and great camera work!!
@peterg0
@peterg0 8 лет назад
You've been brainwashed by western countries too!Actually all school in China using Mandarin as their primary language,not just Tibet!haha...and dialect not prohibited in daily lives!You can watch lots of video on youtube about traveling Tibet,those local people mostly speak their dialects.
@Bournetolive
@Bournetolive 8 лет назад
Tibetans go to Tibetan language schools with instruction wholly in Tibetan up until the end of middle school. Then, they can choose to switch to Chinese schools or stay in the Tibetan curriculum. Most choose to switch because the reality is that one needs to be proficient in Mandarin Chinese to get further in life in China. I have seen a youtube video where a teacher teaches arithmetic in Tibetan to students in China. So Tibetan, like most other ethnic minority languages in China, is very much a part of the educational curriculum.
@Bournetolive
@Bournetolive 8 лет назад
As a matter of fact, most Tibetans who go to India are bilingual in both Tibetan and Chinese. It is actually India where Tibetan language is more threatened. For example, the schools for Tibetans in Dharamsala teach mostly in English and Hindi while Tibetan instruction is given much less priority. Meanwhile, in Indian-controlled Ladakh, the Ladakhi language (a branch of Tibetan) is not even taught in school - English and Urdu, the official language of Kashmir, are taught instead.
@Bournetolive
@Bournetolive 8 лет назад
Also the internment camps and nuclear waste dumping, while abhorrent, occurred mostly in Qinghai, on the northern fringes of the Tibetan plateau, which is very sparsely populated (one of the lowest population densities in the world) and populated by more Mongols than Tibetan in many places. It is a very mixed area of the Plateau. As a matter of fact, if you read the Dalai Lama's autobiography, he even says that he was born in Qinghai to a TIbetan family who abandoned the use of the Tibetan language many generations ago and switched to the Qinghai dialect of Chinese instead (what he calls "a broken form of Chinese"). As a matter of fact, he did not learn to speak a word of Tibetan until he went to Lhasa to began his training and education as the Dalai Lama.

So if you want to mention history, please learn some before posting: All of the information below can be looked up on Wikipedia. 1. Tibet has always been under Chinese rule since Ming Dynasty (mostly autonomous region like US territories today). 2. UK invaded China twice in the late 1800s and these invasions from the West eventually caused the overthrowing of the last Emperor which resulted in China splitting into warloards. During this time Tibet had a brief independence. But between 1910-1949, there were no unified China in the first place. China was divided into four main "countries": Japan's Manchuria, Beiyang government in Beijing, the Republic of China government in Nanjing and Tibet. Tibet is just part of this fracturing process. In fact, the first flag of Republic of China (1911) had five strips, representing The Union of The Five Races, namely Han, Mongols, Manchus, Hui and Tibetan. 3. PRC went into Tibet relatively peacefully in 1950 and negotiated a deal with Dalai Lama so Tibet joined China peacefully via autonomous rule. 4. US CIA trained Tibetan rebels and sent money to Dalai Lama throughout 1950s, which lead to a violent uprising in 1959 and the eventual exile of Dalai Lama. China today exempts all taxes from Tibet and 97% of Tibetan budget is coming from other provinces' transfer payments. Also the footage of the killing of lamas is not from Tibet. You also know nothing about the 2008 Tibetan riot. Read some unbiased information before putting politics in your video. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_Tibetan_unrest Stop spreading lies. Thanks.

+Abhishu Brahmecha First of all, When the Republic of China(Run by Guo Min Dang ) is formed or take over Qing Dynasty. Tibet (XiZhang) already in the map. Guo Min Dang which later left the mainland to Taiwan, because of the militant government and corrupted system that they have at that time. That is one of the reason why PLA of Communist Party can beat them in the civil war and force them to Taiwan Island. PLA of Communist Party would not win the civil war if it was not support by the people. Guo Min Dang at the time are well equipped compare to PLA. PLA of Communist Party win the civil war which the Mainland china is no longer Republic of China but become People's Republic of China. Which is known as China of today. Some shit went wrong and cultural revolution happen. Some temple is tear down. Some historical place is damaged. Some scholar is hurt. China official do admit and that is in the history, go around the street of beijing and ask people. They do know that happen. What happen now in Tibet is the monk or Dalai-lama is trying to get the public to separate tibet from china. Thus view as separatist, which is not acceptable in most country politic and law.

Thank you Karl for the beautiful video of Lhasa,Tibet. I am not from Lhasa but from small village near shigatse . Hope to return to my motherland soon in near future. Don't bother about all these negative comments from Chinese netizen. Truth hurt sometimes. Keep doing great work. Tibet is sacred place and I am sure you will get good(positive) karma by visiting it with good intention. Cheers.

The Great Wall of China sponsored by Subway!! Bit like the Jesus the redeemer in Rio De Janeiro sponsored by Coke, good old advertisers never miss an opportunity. That Forbidden City was absolutely hectic, ld pass on that. Guys lm so impressed you found so much alcohol even on a train!! Well done, it actually looked like a great trip. You are the first Travel "vlogger" that has not been a complete wanker about Tibet, poor Chris... but the irony was when he was being transferred to the Hospital in Kathmandu on O2 unable to breathe properly and the Ambulance driver was puffing away on Cigarettes that was golden. Cant wait to catch episode 2 this was awesome👍

@@taidelek9994 I stayed 8 weeks in Tibet. I was in Lhasa for a few weeks and tried to get a permit to travel to Mount Kailash. After many visits to the local police station I was able to get one. There were no trains connecting Beijing to Lhasa, few cars and fewer Han-Chinese. In September of that year there was an uprising in Lhasa, by that time I had already left.

And I do not get the point of the camera. They are everywhere in each city in China. I don't see a reason why the cameras in Tibet are for any special considerations.

Seeing the military everywhere should give you a clue. The Chinese government does a lot of surveillance. There have been several uprisings in the past.

emm, you know Tibet is just a province of China called 西藏 in Chinese and there are a lot of Han people living there~ Due to some political reasons, this area may be a little politically sensitive but it is within China's history and you are really welcome to come ever again !
