Well from his pov his marriage was an upgrade to his status and Beren for his priced princess seems like a downgrade, he$'s not being a hypocrite but an elitist. Anyway, I think he did not want to give his truly beloved daughter away to anyone, and that seems relatable 😁

It's no coincidence that Celegorm and Curufin both have names that start with the letter 'C.' Even their father, the biggest 'C' up to that time, (among the elves at least) had a bad feeling about them.

Finrod has always been my favorite Elf of any age in Middle-earth which makes me super happy to hear him being appreciated, and so glad that he's such a major character in my favorite First Age story. Of course that means it's incredibly sad to me when he is killed, but at least he dies nobly (of course) and he'll be resurrected in Valinor so it's all good except that he won't meet Beren or Luthien again.

Celegorm and Curufin would fit as characters in the Iliad, where 'real men' would laugh at the idea of fighting for love but encourage bitter hatred, cunning manipulation, and cold steel against the supposed foe of all their people, who snubbed their honour (but really it's just a pretext to pillage and loot)... but honestly, the people of Nargothrond letting their king down are the real disappointment to me personally 😢

Regarding Huan and his presence at the side of Celegorm… perhaps it is a case of his original master had instructions from Eru Iluvatar on where Huan needed to be so as to be available when Beren and Luthian needed him. So much in relation to Beren happens in accordance with Iluvatar’s Plan that it isn’t really a stretch to think he may have been guiding things a bit.

Does Beren at any point say to himself--'I am asking too much of this decent fellow (Finrod) in my personal quest to get a jewel (Silmaril) so I can then get a girl (Luthien)?' I have not reread the story in years.
@12classics39
@12classics39 5 месяцев назад
My personal theory is that Beren knows Finrod of all people will understand his love for and need to be with Lúthien in spite of their differences…because Finrod was actually in love with Beren’s mortal ancestor Bëor, who literally walked away from his people permanently to live with Finrod in Nargothrond. So no matter if Beren asks for help or not, Finrod will give it to him, not only because of his oath to Beren’s father, but also his love of Beren’s forefather.

I am… beyond loving this-your work in studying all these writings, in bringing together the stories and retelling them with clarity and reverence and wit-sharing all this with us is an immense joy. I was a young teenager when the Silmarillion came out, and I and all my fellow young Tolkien nerds did our best to get through it, but honestly it’s closer to, say, the old Larousse Encyclopedia of Mythology than it is to the narrative of the Lord of the Rings, and I had a scattered understanding of the story at best. Aaaaaaah this is so awesome! You do a *really* good job telling this story -- you insert enough context and info. on the characters throughout that I really feel like I'm getting the whole world of it, and not just an isolated story. But at the same time, you also make sure the narrative is so well-integrated and such a part of those characters that I don't feel like I'm getting a history lesson (which is why I could never quite get through the Silmarillion myself). I'm really looking forward to your next video!! :D (this also makes me think -- do you have a Patreon? What an amazing guy..everything good that you would want in a person, you can;t not love and admire the guy/Elf. I could/would definitely live in his kingdom. As for Celegorm and Curufin? what's that saying?..there's no "I" in team, but there is a "C" in Cxxt. And their oath? they will pursue them till the end of time, yet they're cowering away. Also no heart/soul, that they will kill their own kind without a 2nd thought..total, absolute Cxxts!

By acting in haste, thinking he has set the "impossible quest", thinking he'll just turn it down, it backfires BIG TIME and now changes/will change things forever. So, after Melia speaks to him quietly and explaining what he has just done (without 2nd thought), he (Thingol) must finally realise/think "Fxxk, what have I done? And that the path/s of fate are now set and there is no way back, especially the part about the Silmaril attatching him and his people now, to the doom on Mandos.

I‘ve watched this video multiple times already (it‘s just that good) but this is the first time Galadriel‘s comment about Finrod not having a wife jumped out at me. Yes it leaves him unfettered for the oath he makes in the future. But I think there‘s a more personal reason. He did after all leave the love of his life behind in Valinor. And after his reincarnation he was free to be with her again, unfettered by other bonds of marriage (the concept of divorce and remarriage is almost entirely foreign to elves which is why it was so shocking when Finwe did just that).

Menegroth vs Nargothrond. Did the Elves know about the coming of Men?? I guess the Valar could have told them at any point, but it seems noteworthy that a race knew of the creation of another race. It emphasizes the lack of evolution? I guess. It's a neat thought! Thanks, Dave!!

That story always seems very strange to me. I get the oath and the bond between the house of Beor and Barahir and Finrod, but this guy Beren, comes along and wants to go get a silmaril out of Morgoths crown because he has a crush. I don't know... I think Finrod should have told him to get himself back into proportion and shut up. You don't provoke an oath just because you got a crush on someone. And besides, you said you'll get a silmaril, than get it yourself, without getting others into trouble on your behalf. This all thing seems weird

" technically Finrod is just the chief prince of the youngest line of the Noldor." Finrod is literally a king, and neither Fingon being High King nor him only being of the third house of the Noldor changes that. He is consistently referred to as king throughout the silmarillion and the other writings. He wears a crown, has a throne, and Nargothrond is consistently called a kingdom. If Fingon is High King of the Noldor that implies that the Noldor have other kings. Anyways, I just find it odd that you seemingly consider Finrod to not really be a king when he most certainly is the King of Nargothrond and the king of its people such as Edrahil. And not just an over-lord to them. Same goes for Turgon. And now I'm curious to know if you'd have the same view on Turgon.

By the Valar, it truly seems to me that Gandalf trusted in Hobbit friendship, dwarves and men during the quest of the ring just to keep these imbalanced Elven Lords out of the game. If Tolkien makes anything clear is that he thinks that power corrupts, and that the simple life is preferable to being an Elven Lord who can raft great things and then do terrible things to get them back.

Excellent perspective on the Elves---since I first started reading Tolkien (50+ years ago), I've had only qualified admiration for them; they have some wonderful qualities to be sure, but often seem like snobby elitists just under the surface, plus (as is beautifully illustrated in all of Dave's videos) can be just the most colossally awful beings out there. Quality of heart is far more impressive than magical abilities no matter how beautiful, and yes---the more "lowly" lines of hobbits, dwarves, and men end up outlasting the Elves.

I'm sorry that you don't feel appreciated. I've never Intentionally disrespected any commenter on this channel. The truth is there are three types of comments. Single sentence compliments that are very easy to respond to with a simple like, easy to answer questions that I endevour to respond to, and more open ended thoughts that would take a prohibitively long time to respond to fully considering how many comments there are. Yours typically fall in the third category. I'm sorry that most of your comments have fallen through the cracks, but I promise it's nothing personal.

@@tolkienuntangled I apologize for the misunderstanding. Honestly I do not believe it is your responsibility to like or reply to anyone's comments. I understand why you might feel compelled to do so, but I never leave a comment with the expectation that the content creator is going to reply, let alone carry on a debate. That said, what I had noticed, in the comment sections of the last few videos, was you had 'liked' virtually all the comments except mine. Naturally I drew a conclusion. I appreciate your reply concerning this matter, and look forward to enjoying your future videos.
