The Qvale Mangusta Is the Italian Exotic Car You’ve Never Heard Of 

this has the name and looks like a car that would be from GTA

I saw one of these parallel-parked behind a Nissan Pathfinder when I went carspotting in Dallas, TX. I talked to the owner and apparently his was 1 of 3 supercharged-out-of-the-factory versions in the world! As soon as I saw it and learned what it was, I thought, "I bet Doug's made a video on this, I just know it." And here I am.

Doug, the Qvale Mangusta key does have a brushed metal plaque branded Mangusta. On the car you tested it was popped out.

That window arm rest is probably one of the coolest things I've ever seen

It looks like a fat Miata.

I've actually seen one of these IRL, by total chance on a car trailer at a rest stop a few years ago. Once I looked up the production numbers I was ecstatic that I'd seen such a rare car.

The front end of the Mangusta was similar to the Fiat 20v Coupé Turbo.

The Qvale Mangusta is the uglier Mustang you didn't want.

Fun fact: It was inspired by the TVR Griffith and went on to become the basis for the MG X-Power.

Just saw one for sale on BRING A TRAILER and wondered if daddy Doug had a review of this car because I really wanted to know how this convertible top worked. And here I am. Doug is the ultimate destination for reviewing any interesting cars. Great job Doug!

The chassis is specifically built for this car. It does not share any Mustang bits. The drivetrain, however, is all Mustang, as is a lot of the switch gear and even the steering column as you pointed out. But the chassis is not at all Ford. That having been said, the 1999-2004 Mustang Cobras did in fact have an independent rear suspension, which makes them feel significantly more planted than the traditional stick axle... So, if Qvale were going to use a full Mustang chassis, that would be the one to go for. Probably still better that it was in fact its own chassis, though...

That asymmetrical rear wheel well is weirding me out a bit.

"We've all driven mustangs" I'm 11, I haven't driven a mustang. The only thing I've driven is a golf cart and lots of go karts.

So cool! I actually saw one of these years ago on a family vacation when I was a kid. I actually think this is probably the exact one that I saw! My dad talked to the owner, we would have been traveling back from Maine to Ohio. So we definitely would have passed through Pennsylvania which is where you said this one was! Awesome car!

i remember this, it was developed by the Rover Group into the MG XPower SV, they had the right idea, they got rid of the rear seats that aren't, and put helmet holders there! It looked a hell of a lot better than this!

It reminds me of the Maserati TC idea. Ive seen a Qvale before, but never realized how rare or how mustang they were.

Now you need to drive the MG XPower SV that was based on the Qvale Mangusta.

Awesome find!! I still had it in my head as the DeTomaso Mangusta but that only goes to show I lost it out of sight when it was still being planned ... Thank you, these superexotics are always worth the time and this shorter clips make it even easier to just get a good look at it. And that roof mechanism is worth a rewatch!! That daun feather jacket though...that is not acceptable ^^

I haven't thought about this since I was a kid, I did a project for my CAD class in high school involving this car. There is a small garage down the street from my parents house called Skips in Baltimore County Maryland that had the contract to do the inspections on them after they left customs in the Baltimore Harbor before they were sent to the dealerships. I was always intrigued by the car and very much intrigued by how this tiny garage in pretty much nowhere had a full parking lot of these cars in every color. What a fun little vehicle with a very odd convertible roof mechanism.

I think he's forgetting that it's based off the SVT cobra of this time, which is a way different car than the normal mustang.

The proportions are hillarious. The height of the bonnet, the downward angle at the rear, the end of the roof, the side sills and oh Lord the headlights, lol. Fantasticly off on so much levels. Somehow they managed to make the rear wheels look 2 inches smaller than the front (though they aren't). But still somehow likeable.

Doug, Rayco is right around the corner from my house! I actually went into their showroom years ago and stumbled upon this odd exotic car. Being that i live so close to this car dealer the guys who worked there were cool with me sitting in all these exotic cars, including this one!

It's not quite as bad in person I saw one at Cars and Cannoli-- for its period it wasn't too ugly. Not a gorgeous Italian car tho, or even as pretty as the original Mangusta (De Tomaso ones). Doug should review that!

my Quvale gave me a job delivering cars from his company Maserati Cars , which was a north american distributer for cars such as Maserati , Jensen Intercepter - Jensen Healy etc. I was 21 yr.s old delivering exotics throughout the northeast , the job did not suck ! He was a great man who went on to produce the Quvale Mangusta . Thanks Schell Quvale

In the U.K. that car was repackaged and re-bodied as the MG XPower SV. I used to have the SV and it drove awesome, proper little muscle car.

I've got pictures of this car from 98 99 when we air shipped them. I used to handle the Ford account that hand built the 302 for these. Interesting copy of the mustang. It never took off but I always wanted one of those motors to accidentally get left behind. lol. Nice video and nice throw back.
